Opis:: A continuing threat of infestation to forest stands by the nun moth (Lymantria monacha) and difficulties in predicting the mass occurrence of this species necessitate precise analyses of the changes in the nun moth abundance over time and space. The paper provides a comparative analysis of the abundance of larvae and butterflies on the same control plots in the years 1996 – 2001. The observations demonstrated that the changes in the abundance of larvae and butterflies – males were directly proportional. A distinct difference was found only in 2001. Inspections indicated a relatively high number of larvae and a significant decline in the number of butterflies – males as compared with the previous year. Such differences in the abundance of these two developmental stages may have resulted from the high mortality of individuals during their development and give a picture of different development of this foliophage population.

Opis:: The knowledge on the spatial distribution of pine foliophagous insect populations can be very useful in forecasting and prevention of their mass outbreaks. Checks of the quantities of fallen excrements were considered one of the reliable methods to detect the distribution of larvae in stands. Such checks oriented, in the first place, on the nun moth were performed in the years 1996−2003. The results showed high differences in the density of larvae even over a small forest area. The presence of such stand fragments where the high densities of larvae occurred more frequently than in other stand fragments were confirmed. In the same forest areas, higher densities of larvae of other foliophagous species of pine were also ascertained.

Opis:: An increase in the abundance of local populations of Hyloicus pinastri L. Lepidoptera, Sphingidae is periodically recorded in many regions of Poland. In the Tuczno Forest District, the occurrences of larvae of this species have been monitored since 1996. The presence of larvae in tree crowns was established from the quantity of falling excrements. The account was taken of the percentage of colonised control trees and the mass of falling excrements. The abundance of larvae in the period of 1996−2002 varied. Since 2000, however, a distinct increase in the percentage of the colonised areas has been noted. In some years, this growth was accompanied by the decline in the amount of falling excrements in individual areas though the general tendency was rising. The likely cause of this decline could be a declining population density due to the expansion of Hyloicus pinastri on other fragments of stands. In 2002, the density of larvae the percentage of the colonised stands was high. This accounts for the dynamic population growth of Hyloicus pinastri in the study area.

Opis:: In 1996, the monitoring of the nun moth (Lymantria monacha L.) larvae in the period between outbreaks was carried out in the selected pine stands in the Tuczno Forest District. The presence of larvae in tree crowns were identifies on the basis of excrement fall. It has been demonstrated that at the early stage of development larvae were present nearly in every stand fragment. Small percentage of larvae that attained the pupa and imagine stage was presumably due to the high mortality during the developmental period. The complete development of larvae was found in some stand patches where feeding and developmental conditions possibly appeared to be relatively more favourable than in other stand patches.

Opis:: The paper presents monitoring results of sawfly (Diprionidae, Hym.) larvae occurrence and changes in abundance in the period of their feeding activity in different pine stands in the years between 2000 and 2002. The presence of larvae in tree crowns was established on the basis of counts of fallen excrements. The mass of fallen excrements and the number of excrement pellets accounted for great differences in abundance of larvae feeding in tree crowns among the successive years. Distinct periods of increased excrements fall were ascertained which corresponded to the peak of the abundance and activity of larvae. They occurred at different times in the successive years probably as a result of differences in the development pattern of two sawfly generations. In the case of high population abundance the excrements fall was more even, thus the limit between the end of the first and the beginning of the second development of the second sawfly generation was not distinct. Parts of stands where larvae were more abundant than in other fragments have been identified.

Opis:: This paper synthesizes results from the study on abundances of pine beauty moth (Panolis flammea Den. et Schiff.) larvae in selected stands of the Tuczno Forest District conducted in the years 1999−2002. Observation of frass fall onto dispensers set beneath tree crowns was the method to assess larvae abundance. The purpose was to assess the level of infestation of stands by larvae, as well as the rates of growth and development of larvae. Obtained results indicated the occurrence of pine beauty moth larvae almost in every fragment of the studied stands with densities of larvae in crowns changing from year to year. The year 2001 saw the greatest increase in larvae abundance. Observations showed that in 2001, the development and growth rates of larvae differed from those in 2002. The occurrence of larvae in centres, which is typical for the period between outbreaks, continued.

Opis:: The objective of the studies was to characterise the population dynamics of pine−shoot beetles (Tomicus piniperda L. and T. minor Hart.; Coleoptera: Scolytidae) and to evaluate differences in their abundances in different parts of selected pine stands. Beetle abundances were monitored using pheromone traps with Tomodor dispenser distributed on control plots over a total area of about 400 hectares. Observations indicated a high dynamics of beetle abundances in subsequent years, as well as a high spatial variation in beetle abundances within the study area. Besides, it was shown that changes in pine−shoot beetle abundances in the stands under study were, to a great extent, asynchronic.
