Opis:
This research reviews the geology, petrogenesis, compositional trends and geochronology of the rare-metal pegmatite of southwestern Nigeria. The source of these pegmatites is still presently debated which have been explained as either product of highly fractionated molten material or anatexis of the local crust. However, published works of past authors have been compiled to give a detailed understanding of the formation of the mineral deposits. The basement complex of southwestern Nigeria comprises of Precambrian rocks of amphibolite, the hornblende gneiss and the granite gneisses which were formed as a result of the opening and closing of the ensialic basin with significant, extensive subduction during the Pan-African orogeny. The pegmatites in this region have shown internal zoning and a high degree of evolution from the border zone to the core zone during the crystallization and solidification of the felsic granite to pegmatite melt. The rare-metal pegmatites have distinct chemical compositions and mineralogy, containing quartz, biotite, muscovite, microcline, garnet with localized tourmaline, tantalite and columbite. These pegmatites vary significantly by their bulk-rock and mineral chemistry which indicates a more peraluminous attribute and enrichments of lithophile elements of Rb, Cs, Ta and Ba. Previous K/Ar isotopic ages (502.8±13.0 Ma and 514.5±13.2 Ma) suggest that the pegmatites are related to the post-collisional phase of intensive metasomatism. Adopted from previous studies, a five-stage conceptual model of evolution which is widely accepted have been proposed for the origin of the pegmatites.

Opis:
A decomposition study was carried out on the leaf litters of Leucaena leucocaephala to determine the rate of decomposition of its leaves with respect to its placement on above or below the ground levels in L. leucocaephala plantations of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria. In the study, leaf litter were randomly handpicked from the forest floor, of this, 40 g each were weighed into thirty (30) litter bags of 2 mm mesh size in which 15 were randomly placed on the forest floor (above-ground) and the remaining 15 were buried in the soil between 5-10 cm depth (below-ground). Data were analysed using descriptive statistical techniques such as percentage, while inferential statistics (simple linear regression) was used to determine relationships between various nutrient elements and days of decomposition (DOD). We noted that the percentage of mass loss of leaf litter increased with time in days after deposit and was higher (29.93%, 32.43 % and 33.25%, 41.65%) at 80 to 100 days of placement above- and below-ground, respectively. Moreover, the exchangeable basic cations and chemical compositions of litters were not consistent with respect to DOD. Regression analysis of nitrogen (N) and organic carbon (OC) showed that these elements significantly contributed to the high (86 %) overall decomposition of litter (p < 0.05, p < 0.01) below-ground level. It is, therefore, concluded that decomposition of leaf litters occur faster below ground than above ground within the forest plantation.

Opis:
Agroforestry system relies heavily on the choice of suitable tree species that should offer diversity of benefits and show compatibility with food crops. A 3 × 4 × 2 factorial design in a split-split plot design was used for this experiment in three replicates for two years. The considered factors were; biomass species (Albizia lebbeck and Parkia biglobosa, and control) as main plots, four rates of nitrogen (0, 40, 80, 120 kg N ha-1) as sub-plots, and two maize varieties (DMR-ESR-7 and 2009 EVAT) as sub-sub plots. A. lebbeck (45.3, 52.9) attained early days to 50% tasselling and silking than P. biglobosa (46, 53.9) in combined means respectively. It is therefore, concluded that incorporation of A. lebbeck with application of fertilizer from 40 kg N ha-1 to 120 kg N ha-1 rate into the soil improved the production of tasselling and silking of 2009 EVAT over DMR-ESR-7 maize variety. And the combinations of Albizia and varieties of maize shortened days to 50% tasselling and silking than Parkia.

Opis:
Improvement of Parkia seedling growth on plant height (PH) using seed dormancy breaking technologies in different soil media was investigated at nursery unit of Department for Forestry and Wildlife Management, Federal University Dutsin-Ma. Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four replicates was the design used. The data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) while the means were separated using Fishers’ Least Significant Difference (F-LSD; P≤ 0.05). Emergence of seeds was observed to commence four days after sowing (DAS) in mechanically scarified seeds (MS). The top soil added with mycorrhiza at 120 g (M120+) had significantly higher value (24.01) on PH at 10 weeks after sowing (WAS) in the main effect. In the interactive effect, seeds soaked in 98 % concentrated tetraoxosulphate (V1) (H2SO4) for 2 and 4 minutes (A2 and A4) and sowed in sterilized top soil (SS) and non-sterilized (NS) had significantly higher values (16.70 and 16.25) and (27.60 and 28.25) on PH at 4 and 12 WAS respectively. Seeds soaked in H2SO4 for 6 minutes (A6) and sowed in M120+ had higher value (15.60) on PH at 4 WAS. MS in M60+, hot water (HW) at 80 ºC and 100 ºC for 10 and 5 minutes had higher effect (16.52 and 16.48) on PH at 4 WAS. MS in HW at 60 ºC for 15 minutes and HW 80 ºC in M60+ was significant on PH (26.80, 27.85 and 29.00) at 12 WAS. HW 60 ºC in SS had higher effect (15.95) on PH at 4 WAS. In conclusion, mechanically scarified seeds, seeds soaked in H2SO4 acid for 2-6 minutes and in hot water between 60 ºC to 100 ºC for at most 15 minutes break Parkia dormancy and grow rapidly in ectomycorrhiza soil.

Opis:
This study was carried-out to investigate the abundance and diversity of zooplankton in River Shasha, Southwest Nigeria. The zooplankton community constitutes an important component in the faunal composition of the water body. Samples were collected bi-monthly between February 2006 to February 2008, with a mind of capturing various seasons in the period of study, at two sampling stations (Ipetumodu and Edun-abon) established along River Shasha. A total number of 54 zooplankton species were identified, comprising of five classes, namely Rotifera (29 species), Ostracoda (8 species), Arthropoda (5 species), Copepoda (5 species), Protozoa (4 species) and Cladocera (3 species). The most abundant species were Brachionus, Lecane and Keratella recorded the highest distribution among the zooplankton observed during the sampling period. Among the Rotifers, Branchions patulus and Filina opoliensis were found abundant. Holopedium amazonicum and Scapholebris armata were predominant among the Cladoceras. Among the Copepods the dominant species was Ectocyclops phaleratus and Hemicypris ovate and Cypris subglobosa among Ostracoda. Among the Protozoa, Diffugia sp and Vorticella sp were observed. Ceratopogonid sp. was most dominant among Arthropoda. The density of zooplankton population was maximum during dry season (158702 Org/L) and minimum (12402 Org/L) during rainy season due to the different environmental conditions of the water bodies. The overall mean abundance of zooplankton population was in the following order: Rotifera > Protozoan > Arthropoda > Copepoda > Cladocera >Ostracoda. The few species of Zooplankton identified in River Shasha may reflect the moderate level of limit nutrient and there is need for regular monitoring of the waterbody to avoid the excess input of nutrients from domestic and agricultural waste that could lead to eutrophication.
