Opis:
The present paper aims at finding ways to solve the problem of how to teach culture, showing the connections between culture and language, while at the same time striving to develop intercultural competence. In the author’s opinion, the ethnography of speaking is the answer. Starting with an overview of what ethnography offers to intercultural communicative competence, this paper supports the idea of implementing an approach close to the ethnography of speaking and shows how linguistic ethnography might be implemented into the study of culture in order to show the relationships between language use, cultural behavior and values. This approach rests upon the belief that the implicit knowledge applied in use of a language needs deeper analysis in order to enhance students’ symbolic competence, which in turn enhances their intercultural competence. Examples used in the analysis to justify this claim derive from material used during a course in General English, or courses of British and American Studies. The concept of language-games as proposed by Wittgenstein, who pays attention to the context of language use at the micro level, is applied. The suggestion is to position this analysis in the field of the ethnography of speaking, or linguistic ethnography, and extend the role of a student to one of a linguistic ethnographer. Ethnographic techniques implemented in the analysis of language use and its context might contribute to the development of symbolic competence as complementary to intercultural communicative competence.

Opis:
This article reports the results of a study of self-perception of their language identity by advanced FL students. The aim of the study is to observe what students’ language choices are and what guides them in these choices.  The concepts related to bi/multilingualism are taken into consideration, following Cook’s opinion (1992: 558) that L2 users should be compared to bilinguals rather that monolinguals. The perception of the language self is related to language competence acquired in formal education. The findings will be referred to recent research on language and identity in a foreign language context conducted elsewhere, and  suggestions for further study in the field will be provided.

Opis:
The paper presents theoretical considerations on the role of dialogue in ICC development and assessment and the model for ICC assessment as a practical application. It is argued here that the application of the idea of dialogue in a Bakhtinian sense may constitute a theoretical framework for ICC assessment since this kind of dialogue involves the presentation of a variety of opinions or ideas. The model for ICC assessment, as it was developed for the purpose of the author’s unpublished PhD dissertation, is presented in this paper. The model includes various types of tests that can be incorporated into ICC evaluation. The final part of the discussion attempts at showing the points of convergence between DA approach and the dialogic approach to ICC assessment.

Opis:
Natural polyphenols and polyphenol-rich extracts have been found to possess preventive and therapeutic potential against several types of cancers, including colorectal cancer (CRC), which is an example of an inflammation-associated cancer. This study examines the chemopreventive effect of a Japanese quince (Chaenomeles japonica) fruit flavanol preparation (JQFFP) on colon cancer SW-480 cells. JQFFP, rich in procyanidin monomers and oligomers, was found to inhibit the SW-480 cell viability by 40% at 150 µM catechin equivalents (CE) after 72 h incubation when compared to control, but it was non-toxic to normal colon fibroblast CCD-18Co cells. Furthermore, 100 µM CE JQFFP suppressed COX-2 mRNA expression to 36.7% of control values and protein expression to 77%. In addition, JQFFP reduced the MMP-9 protein expression (to 24% vs. control at 100 µM CE) and caused inhibition of its enzymatic activity (to 35% vs. control at 100 µM CE). Not only did JQFFP inhibit the COX-2 and MMP-9 levels, but it also reduced the NF-κB protein expression (to 65% of control) and phosphorylation of its p65 subunit (to 51%) at 100 µM CE. These results provide the first evidence that JQFFP inhibits COX-2, MMP-9, and NF-κB expression, suggesting that it has cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-metastatic activities towards the colon cancer SW-480 cells.
