This article is a contribution to the discussion on the cityscaping role of new institutions of culture created recently in Poland. The paper focuses on the Sphere of Culture (Strefa Kultury) in Katowice which was launched in 2015. The reference point is provided by Abandoibarra in Bilbao. The author compares two flagship revitalisation projects, undertaken in Katowice and Bilbao, containing the most emblematic buildings housing cultural institutions. The juxtaposition of Katowice and Bilbao is a result of the particular place of Bilbao, which for many years has been recognised as a blueprint for a successful revitalisation process, and a number of similarities of these two cities such as their industrial past, their pivotal positions in their capacity as regional mining centres, the stigma of industrial cities and their strong regional/national identity. The analysis shows that in the cultural dimension, both – the Sphere of Culture and Abandoibarra – are embedded in the local ethos and they endorse regional traditions; however, in terms of the social resonance created by institutions located there, these two places are diametrically different. The Sphere of Culture, contrary to Abandoibarra, due to its monofunctional character, its spatial separation from other city districts and promoting car journeys as a main transport mode, in its current form does not completely fulfil its potential and does not allow those establishments located there to become ‘propagators’ of city-ness.

Niniejszy artykuł poświęcony jest tzw. „efektowi Bilbao”. Zasadniczą osią pracy jest analiza szczególnej relacji pomiędzy zastosowaną w Bilbao strategią rewitalizacji miasta, z ikoniczną dla całego przedsięwzięcia budowlą, jaką było Muzeum Guggenheima, a kulturą Basków, a więc ich sposobem życia i wartościami wspólnotowymi. Punktem wyjścia dla zawartych tu rozważań jest pojęcie „rewitalizacji przez kulturę”, które rozumiane bywa dwojako. Po pierwsze (najczęściej), interpretuje się je jako całokształt działań polegających na wykorzystaniu w projektach rewitalizacji miast obiektów lub instytucji kultury. Według drugiej interpretacji, termin ten opisuje proces przywracania miasta do życia odbywający się dzięki aktywności (najlepiej lokalnych) artystów. W obydwu jednak przypadkach, istota kultury zostaje istotnie wypaczona, ponieważ zarówno w pierwszym, jak i drugim znaczeniu, zakres jej rozumienia zostaje spłycony, a sama kultura potraktowana w istocie jako synonim „sztuki”. Wychodząc od definicji Floriana Znanieckiego, który kulturę rozumie nie tylko w kategoriach materialnych, lecz także jako wszystko to, co zamyka się w „niematerialnych wytworach działalności ludzkiej”, „kulturowość” bilbaońskiej rewitalizacji przedstawiona jest w niniejszej pracy nie przez pryzmat Muzeum Guggenheima jak przykładu instytucji kultury, lecz poprzez odniesienie się do zastosowanej w Bilbao strategii rewitalizacyjnej i jej oparcia w społeczności lokalnej. Artykuł zawiera więc analizę relacji pomiędzy Muzeum Guggenheima w Bilbao a baskijską filozofią polityczną, szeroko pojmowanymi baskijskim wartościami ekonomicznymi, jak również Basków wizją samych siebie.
In this article I analyze the so-called: “Bilbao effect”. I am interested primarily in the relationship between the revitalization of Bilbao with its iconic building – the Guggenheim Museum and the Basque culture, i.e. the Basque way of life and the Basque values. The starting point of this analysis is the concept of “urban regeneration through culture”, which is usually understood in one of two ways. The first meaning refers to such activities that rely on the use of cultural institutions in the urban regeneration projects, whereas the second refers to the activities that engage and activate (local) artists. Both interpretations tend, however, to distort the meaning of culture. In both cases it is understood very narrowly and operates merely as the synonym of “the arts”. Basing on Znaniecki’s definition, who understood culture, not only in material terms but also as everything that falls within the category of so-called “intangible creations of human activity”, I analyze the “cultural dimension” of urban regeneration of Bilbao not through the typical presentation of Guggenheim Museum as a cultural institution, but rather through the choice of revitalization strategies and its socio-cultural basis. In doing so, I explore the connections between the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the Basque political philosophy, Basque economic values, and the Basques image of themselves.

W artykule podejmuję problem współczesnego nacjonalizmu i miejsca, jakie zajmuje on pośród funkcjonujących dzisiaj ruchów społecznych. Podkreślając aktualność problematyki nacjonalistycznej i obecność nacjonalizmu we współczesnym świecie, zwracam uwagę na pewną ciągłość tradycji nacjonalistycznej i równoczesną odmienność dzisiejszego „nowego” nacjonalizmu od klasycznego („starego”) nacjonalizmu XIX-wiecznego. Przedmiotem analizy był tu nacjonalizm baskijski, który nie tylko pozostaje jedną z podstawowych sił obecnych w baskijskiej przestrzeni społecznej, lecz jest również dobrą egzemplifikacją wspomnianej, szczególnej specyfiki nacjonalizmu, tj. łączenia przez niego przeszłości z teraźniejszością. Z jednej strony nacjonalizm ten jest „nowy”, bo nowe są warunki społeczne, ekonomiczne i polityczne, w których funkcjonuje (co szczególnie widoczne w odniesieniu do celów nacjonalizmu), z drugiej zaś pozostaje wierny swojej tradycji – niezmienne pozostają wartości nacjonalistyczne; zarówno „stary” jak i „nowy” nacjonalizm opiera się na przekonaniu, że Baskowie są narodem i powinni mieć prawo do zachowania swojej kultury narodowej i języka oraz samodecydowania o sobie w sferze politycznej.

The paper presents an analysis of Polish equivalents of the Russian proper name Kolobok. Their diversity results from insufficient familiarity with the Russian source text (a folk fairy tale) in Poland, which is caused by little acquaintance with the hero of the story and lack of a Polish equivalent of such a fairy tale character that carries the same communicative value. Examples in-cluded in the paper do not always preserve the communicative value of the context: in few cases, it had been assessed which elements of the meaning are relevant and significant, and which are redundant, i.e. semantically irrelevant. Provisional equivalents in most cases are based on the inner semantics of the discussed proper name.

A new type of dictionary – a psychological linguistic dictionary was compiled as a result of analyzing 15918 Russian adjectives from the perspective of their relationship with emotions originating in reference to various senses. The dictionary contains information on “the emotional load” of these adjectives, that is how pleasant or how unpleasant emotions a given adjective evokes. The analyzed lexemes were assessed by respondents on the scale of emotions: slightly (un)pleasant – moderately (un)pleasant – very (un)pleasant, which was marked with an appropriate number of pluses or minuses. Although it is believed that representatives of different cultures experience universal emotions, their quality and intensity hidden behind particular linguistic units can diverge for different cultural linguistic communities. Emotions are conditioned socially, culturally and historically; they play an important role in international communication. Thus, when they are incompetently and mistakenly interpreted, this can disturb dialogue between various cultures and even lead to conflicts. In the article, considering equivalents mięsny/мясной and other counterparts, it can be said that not all the examples have a parallel emotional value. Despite the genealogical relationship between the languages and cultures in question, emotive contrasts are not rare. This leads to considering a significant issue of emotive adequacy of dictionary equivalents, which has to be addressed by translators and language teachers.

The article analyses adjectives excerpted from a dictionary entitled Senses, Emotions and Adjectives of the Russian Language and evaluated by respondents as causing very unpleasant emotions (marked in the dictionary with three minuses). An attempt was made to delineate the emotive component of their meaning on the basis of data from dictionaries providing explanations, as well as those presenting associations, accompanied by contexts of their usage traced in the corpus. The data contributing to the analysis can be employed in order to reconstruct emotional images of the world and national cultural specificity of expressing emotions. Additionally, they can be used to scrutinize and shape emotional competence, while the methodology of delineating the emotive component of meaning with the use of affective expression and their associations can be employed in further research into emotive lexical items.

The paper presents the phenomenon of extended collocations in the novel Wojna polsko-ruska pod flagą biało-czerwoną by Dorota Masłowska. Innovative collocations are analysed with reference to an adverb ‘doszczętnie’ [Eng. thoroughly]. New unconventional collocations are among the factors thanks to which the language of the novel is believed to have undergone deconstruction. Unfortunately, in the Russian version of the novel the translator did not reflect the discussed phenomenon, which deprived Russian readers of part of the aesthetic linguistic experience available to Polish readers.

In 2019, the employees of the Institute of Eastern Slavic Studies are celebrating a triple jubilee: as an academic community – the 20th anniversary of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn; as humanities scholars – the 50th anniversary of the Faculty of Humanities; finally, as philologists – the 20th anniversary of the Acta Neophilologica journal. Hence, we are summarizing academic achievements of researchers and teachers who have contributed to the establishment and development of the Institute. These are people who have had to face various problems on their professional path, yet their aim has always been to undertake, organize and popularize scientific research, improving their lectures and classes, promoting Eastern Slavic Studies as well as the university. This close-knit group of staff have contributed to and edited journals, organized conferences, participated in workshops, gaining new qualifications so that students could benefit from their expertise. Unfortunately, as a result of the reform of higher education enforced on the 1st of October 2019, the Institute of Eastern Slavic Studies will cease to exist.

O MIEJSCU I CZASIE WYDANIA KSIĄG LITURGICZNYCH STAROOBRZĘDOWEGO KLASZTORU W WOJNOWIE - SYSTEM SYGNATUR I FOLIACJI Streszczenie Po śmierci ostatnich mniszek ze staroobrzędowego klasztoru w Wojnowie pojawiła się możliwość zbadania pozostałych tam utensyliów. Na szczególną uwagę zasługują księgi, które są systematycznie fotografowane i badane przez wykładowców Uniwersytetu War-mińsko-Mazurskiego. W artykule podjęto próbę określenia miejsca i przybliżonego czasu wydania czterech ksiąg. Na podstawie fałszywego sposobu podawania miejsca wydania oraz ornamentów użytych do ozdobienia księgi autorka określiła, że książki powstały w nielegalnej drukarni Grebniewa w Dziergaczach, prawdopodobnie w latach 1900–1905. W artykule scharakteryzowano inną cechę pozwalającą identyfi kować tę drukarnię - sposób numeracji arkuszy oraz kart w księgach. THE TIME AND PLACE OF PUBLICATION OLD BELIEVERS’ VOLUMES FROM WOJNOWO. THE SYSTEM OF SIGNATURES AND FOLIOING Summary When the last nuns from the Old Believers’ monastery in Wojnowo (Eckerdorf) died, there appeared an opportunity to inspect the objects remaining there. Particular attention should be paid to volumes, which are systematically photographed and analyzed by the lecturers from the University of Warmia and Mazury. This article constitutes an attempt to defi ne the place and approximate time of publication 4 volumes. On the basis of the false way of establishing the place of publication and the ornaments used to decorate the volume, the author established that the volume was published in the illegal Grebnev’s printing house in Dziergacze (Dergachi), probably between 1900 and 1905. The article characterizes also another feature identifying this printing house, namely the way of numbering folios and leaves in volumes.

Dorota Masłowska’s Wojna polsko-ruska pod flagą biało-czerwoną employs various types of linguistic innovations. One of them is a mistaken selection of the number of nouns. This stylistic means results in linguistic humour. In the Russian translation of the novel reflecting this phenomenon should not pose any problems. However, neither of the instances of the stylistic means analysed in the paper was reflected in the Russian target text. It is difficult to determine why the translator did not attempt to show Russian readers a reconstruction of the language of the Polish text. As a result, Irina Lappo’s translation lacks the poetic qualities and refreshing touches of Masłowska’s language.

A person who learns a foreign language should get acquainted with associations of the studied words since they belong to the (passive or active) lexicon of the representatives of the culture of the studied language. Word associations which are stored in the memory (consciousness) of every representative of any language and culture are registered in the dictionary of associations as an associative norm. Learners of Russian are able to get to know such associations through mini-texts appropriately chosen by their teachers (poems, songs, riddles, fixed expressions, proverbs). Such texts constitute a linguistic-culturological commentary which allows learners to “immerse” themselves in the Russian reality and culture, which is the main assumption of any teacher of Russian as a foreign language who adheres to the trend of applied linguistics and culturology. Classes when the described commentary is used help students to develop their socio-cultural competence, which in turn should prevent a cultural conflict during intercultural communication. It seems that in the next decade the attention of teacher trainers will be focused on this aspect of teaching.

This article presents a new type of dictionary – a linguistic-psychological dictionary reflecting structures of language, similar to dictionaries based on associations, but also reconstructing the mental and emotional states of an average user of the Russian language. The analyzed lexemes were assessed by respondents on the scale of emotions: slightly (un)pleasant – moderately (un)pleasant – very (un)pleasant, which was marked with an appropriate number of pluses or minuses. It cannot be overestimated how useful such a dictionary and the information it contains are. Although it is believed that representatives of different cultures experience universal emotions, their quality and intensity hidden behind particular linguistic units can diverge between different cultural-linguistic communities. Emotions are conditioned socially, culturally, and historically; they play an important role in international communication. Thus when they are incompetently and mistakenly interpreted, this can disturb dialogue between various cultures and even lead to conflicts. In the article, considering equivalents cygarowy/сигарный, differences in the evaluation of these adjectives in Polish and Russian are presented, illustrating the need to look for emotionally adequate translation equivalents when rendering them.

Linguistic awareness has been one of the research interests in both cognitive and cultural linguistics in recent years. Images of linguistic signs which originate as part of the linguistic awareness of representatives of various cultures and languages can differ considerably. There are many ways of distinguishing these differences, including semantic analysis and analysis of the connotations related to a given word. This article presents how the term holiday functions in the linguistic awareness of Poles and Russians.
