Opis:
The paper analyses the performance of an Automatic Vessel Identification System on Medium Frequency (AVISOMEF), which works with the Grid Method (GM) on high density maritime European routes using real data and uniformly distributed data. Compared to other systems, AVISOMEF is a novelty, as it is not a satellite system, nor is it limited by a given coverage distance, in contrast to the Automatic Identification System (AIS), though in exceptional circumstances it leans towards it. To perform the analysis, special simulation software was developed. Moreover, a number of maritime routes along with their traffic density data were selected for the study. For each route, two simulations were performed, the first of which based on the uniform traffic distribution along the route, while the second one made use of real AIS data positioning of vessels sailing on the selected routes. The obtained results for both simulations made the basis for formulating conclusions regarding the capacity of selected routes to support AVISOMEF.

Opis:
The present study discusses the adsorption kinetics of arsenic(V) on granular ferric hydroxide (GEH) and the GEH adsorption capacity for arsenic(V) at equilibrium. The impact of temperature on GEH adsorption capacity was studied, as well as the effects of the initial concentration of arsenic(V) and GEH concentration on the adsorption rates of arsenic(V). The Freundlich isotherm describes the arsenic(V) adsorption behavior reasonably well (r2 > 0.965). The adsorption kinetics was studied by fitting the experimental data to both first-order and second-order models. The maximum adsorption capacity of arsenic(V) on GEH was 2.701 mg·g–1, which is higher than the adsorption capacities of other adsorbents reported. The kinetics of arsenic(V) adsorption was well defined by the second-order model, with the correlation coefficients in the range of 0.960–0.987. This study shows that due to its properties, GEH is a good candidate for removal of arsenic(V) from groundwater.

Opis:
Fossil remains of reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) occurring outside their present range are an important indicator of formerly cold climatic conditions, but are easily confused with those of the red deer (Cervus elaphus). The locality of Kiputz IX has yielded one of the best-preserved Late Pleistocene reindeer populations of the southern Pyrenees, occurring in association with Bison priscus and the much more abundant Cervus elaphus. Fossil remains from this site are mostly complete and not affected by human intervention, thus creating the perfect conditions for reliable osteometric analyses. Here, we quantify diagnostic morphological features of the scapula and the humerus of Cervus elaphus and Rangifer tarandus to establish the potential of these bones to aid in interspecific discrimination. In the case of the scapula, the best species discriminator is the ratio of the minimum anteroposterior diameter of the scapular neck and the development of the articular process, while the breadth of the trochlea is the best discriminator in the case of the humerus.

Opis:
The enigmatic marrellomorph arthropod Furca bohemica from the Upper Ordovician Letná Formation, is redescribed. Based on existing museum specimens and new material collected from the southern slope of Ostrý Hill (Beroun, Czech Republic), the morphology and taphonomy of F. bohemica is reappraised and expanded to produce a new anatomical interpretation. The previously distinct taxa F. pilosa and Furca sp., are synonymised with F. bohemica, the latter being represented by a tapho−series in which decay has obscured some of the diagnostic features. A cladistic analysis indicates close affinities between F. bohemica and the Hunsrück Slate marrellomorph Mimetaster hexagonalis, together forming the Family Mimetasteridae, contrary to previous models for marrellomorph internal relationships. As with other representatives of the group, the overall anatomy of F. bohemica is consistent with a benthic, or possibly nektobenthic, mode of life. The depositional setting of the Letná Formation indicates that F. bohemica inhabited a shallow marine environment, distinguishing it palaeoecologically from all other known marrellomorphs, which have been reported from the continental shelf.

Opis:
As part of a comprehensive examination of all radiodontans from Cambrian localities in the USA, Pates et al. (2017a, b) and Pates and Daley (2017) revised the taxonomic affinities of several described specimens. This included the reinterpretation of two putative lobopodians, one from the Wheeler Formation (Utah, USA) and one from the Valdemiedes Formation (Spain), as frontal appendages of the radiodontan genera Stanleycaris and Caryosyntrips respectively. In their comment, Gámez Vintaned and Zhuravlev (2018) disagree with these conclusions and raise three topics for discussion: (i) anatomical features they suggest support a lobopodian affinity for “Mureropodia”; (ii) the identity of Caryosyntrips as a radiodontan, and the assignment of certain specimens to this genus; and (iii) the nomenclatural status of Stanleycaris hirpex as an invalid taxon. For (i), we dispute that the anatomical features put forward by Gámez Vintaned and Zhuravlev (2018) are biological and conclude that a lobopodian affinity for Mureropodia is untenable. In response to (ii), we provide further evidence supporting a radiodontan affinity for Caryosyntrips, and those specimens ascribed to this genus. Finally, we concur with (iii) Stanleycaris as an invalid taxon according to the International Code on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN), and have rectified the situation by providing a valid systematic description.

Radiophronidae, a new ceraphronoid fossil family including two new genera and species, is described here from the Early Cretaceous (Albian) amber from the Basque Cantabrian Basin (Spain). Radiophron ibericus gen. et sp. nov. and Microcostaphron parvus gen. et sp. nov. are described from eight and one specimens respectively. The new fossils show some similarities with the extinct family Stigmaphronidae but are distinguished from it and the extant ceraphronoids mainly by the presence of not fused radial and costal veins, among other characteristics. A first cladistic analysis retrieves Radiophronidae as the basal sister−group to all other ceraphronoids (Ceraphronidae, Megaspilidae, and Stigmaphronidae).

Brodiechelys brodiei is an Early Cretaceous turtle from Great Britain, the only species of the genus. This taxon has been shown in recent phylogenies to be closely related to Xinjiangchelyidae and therefore could be the only representative of this group in Europe. Here, we present several specimens from the Early Cretaceous Maestrazgo Basin, in the Iberian Range of Spain attributed to the British genus, and to a new species, Brodiechelys royoi. This discovery shows that, as previously observed with terrestrial turtles, some freshwater turtle taxa had a wide European distribution during the Early Cretaceous, being present in both Britain and the Iberian Peninsula. This study sheds new light on the phylogenetic position of this enigmatic genus, supporting its attribution to Xinjiangchelyidae, a clade whose presence has been previously confirmed exclusively from the Middle Jurassic to Early Cretaceous of Asia. We propose that another recently identified taxon from the Iberian Peninsula (i.e., Larachelus morla) is also a member of this clade. Recent studies have identified several continental taxa of the clade that included the members of “Macrobaenidae” and “Sinemydidae” in Europe. This study provides new evidence of close relationships between the Early Cretaceous turtle faunas from Europe and Asia.

Opis:
Simosaurus is a Triassic eosauropterygian genus known from cranial and postcranial elements, found in the Middle and Upper Triassic strata of Europe and the Middle East. Simosaurus gaillardoti is currently recognised as the only valid species of the genus, identified in Ladinian strata of an area that includes northeastern France (Lorraine) and southwestern Germany (Baden-Württemberg). The remains from this area include more than 20 skulls. Although some of them were described in detail and figured by several authors since the discovery of S. gaillardoti, many others remained unpublished. Here we study and figure 25 skulls from this taxon, reviewing the previously known specimens, and presenting and analyzing numerous unpublished skulls. This significant sample of skulls from a single taxon of a European Triassic eosauropterygian allows us to recognise intraspecific variability in characters previously identified as non-variable in this species, including some that are often included in phylogenetic analyses of these reptiles. Therefore, we markedly increase our knowledge of the cranial skeleton in this taxon.

A freshwater turtle from the lithographic limestone of Las Hoyas (Barremian of Cuenca, Spain) is described as a new genus and species of Eucryptodira, Hoyasemys jimenezi. The holotype consists of the skull, lower jaw, carapace, plastron, vertebral column, pectoral and pelvic girdle remains, and foreand hindlimbs. Hoyasemys jimenezi gen. et sp. nov. is characterized by three pairs of blind oblique depressions on the ventral surface of the basisphenoid, and a character combination composed, among others, of the articulation between the fourth and fifth cervical vertebrae through a cotyle in the fourth and a condyle in the fifth, amphicoelous caudal centra, and most digits of manus and pes with three elongated phalanges. This study allows clarification of the systematic position of a species of uncertain affinity often identified as “chelydroid” in appearance. A phylogenetic analysis shows Hoyasemys jimenezi gen. et sp. nov. forms a monophyletic group with Judithemys sukhanovi, Dracochelys bicuspis, Sinemys lens, and Ordosemys leios, collectively the sister group of crown Cryptodira.

The use of mixtures of oil-based fuels with organic chemical components (e.g. ethanol, methanol) has been gaining ground in recent years. Several countries try nowadays to replace part of the fossil fuels for various reasons including economics, sustainability or optimization of resources. The characteristics of these combustiblerelated chemical component blends can be analyzed by different means. Optical spectral analysis (e.g. Raman, Fourier-transforminfrared, etc.) can extract inmany casesmost of the required information concerning themolecular structure of a determined chemical sample in an effective and clean manner. Experimental detailed Raman spectra fromvarious gasoline-ethanol blends and a gasoline-ethanolmethanol blend are presented. The Raman spectral information obtained has been used for approximated quantitative analysis with no additional chemical marker or complicated calibration methods. The analysis has been performed using a self-designed, low-cost, robust and frequency precise Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman) spectrometer. This proposed FT-Raman spectrometer has been constructed with a Michelson interferometer, an in-house designed photon counter, and a sensitive trans-impedance photo-detector. Additional complex hardware was not used to compensate the mechanical or thermal drifts disturbances in the interferometer. For accurate spectral calculation an interference pattern generated by a low-power Helium-Neon laser (wavelength λ=632.816nm)was used. The resulting spectral data are in the range of 0*cm-1 to 3500*cm-1. The resolution of these Raman spectra is 1.66*cm-1. Higher resolutions are possible since the scanning distances in the Michelson interferometer can be extended substantially before instrumental effects appear. A comparison of the experimental results obtained with standard Raman shift values revealed a satisfactory accuracy and precision in frequency detection.

Four isolated theropod teeth from the ?Bathonian “Argiles de l’Irhazer” in Niger are described. The teeth were found in association with the holotype of the basal sauropod Spinophorosaurus nigerensis. These specimens have been assigned to two different taxa by independent analyses, such as direct comparison with teeth previously described in the literature, discriminant and morphometric analyses from metric characters, and cladistic and cluster analyses from discrete characters. The results suggest that three teeth share affinities with those of Megalosauridae and Allosauridae, belonging most likely to the former. The fourth tooth might be from a member of the stem group Spinosauridae. If so, this would be the oldest representative of this clade. This tooth shows a combination of characters that are unusual in typical spinosaurid teeth (crown moderately compressed labiolingually and curved distally with minute denticles on the carina and a deeply veined enamel surface texture without apicobasal ridges). This could shed light on the morphological transition from the plesiomorphic ziphodont dental pattern to that of Spinosauridae. This tooth would also allow a better understanding of the origin of the spinosaurids, supporting a Gondwanan origin for the group.

The proportion of urea in the modified combustion method to prepare lithium metasilicate (Li₂SiO₃) powders was investigated. Reactions were performed using LiOH:H₂SiO₃:CH₄N₂O in molar ratios of 1:1:1, 1:1:2, 1:1:3, 1:1:4 and 1:1:5 which were heated at 450°C during 5 min. It was found, by X-ray diffraction, that LiOH:H₂SiO₃:CH₄N₂O in the ratio of 1:1:3 was the more adequate molar ratio to produce mainly Li₂SiO₃. It was observed that excess of urea produced mainly silicium dioxide (SiO₂) in coesite phase instead Li₂SiO₃. Thermogravimetric analyses showed that decomposition products of urea, such as biuret, cyanic acid and cyanuric acid, were found in samples prepared with high proportions of urea (1:1:4 and 1:1:5). Carbonates identified by IR spectroscopy were found in samples prepared with LiOH:H₂SiO₃:CH₄N₂O in 1:1:1, 1:1:2, 1:1:3, 1:1:14 and 1:1:5 molar ratios.
