Opis:
Subject and purpose of work: The issue of savings and what motivates them has continued to generate discussion. This study, therefore, investigated the determinants of savings in Nigeria over the period of 1980 to 2017. Materials and methods: The study employed the Classical Linear Regression Model in its analysis. Results: The results revealed that the determinants of savings include per capita income, gross fixed capital formation, financial deepening and exchange rate. Interest rate and inflation rate showed negative impact on savings. Conclusions: The study recommends that the variables that showed positive impact on savings rate should be properly maintained with relevant policy tools to ensure higher saving rates. Moreover, the government should control spending on economic activities that encourage the creation of more jobs and investments. This will help individuals, firms and governments find opportunities to save money. Finally, the Monetary Authorities should pursue financial deepening policies and implement strategies that will enhance the increase of savings in Nigeria.

Opis:
Subject and purpose of work: The literature on financial development and economic growth is expansive. The proportion of individuals and firms that use or have access to financial services can be referred to as the financially included. Considerable evidence shows that the poor benefit more from access to basic financial services such as payments, savings accounts and insurance. Thus, this study analysed the impact of financial inclusion on financial development in Nigeria between 1982 and 2019. Materials and methods: Multiple regression analysis was employed in the study in order to properly estimate the models and get robust results. Results: The findings reveal that financial inclusion has a minor impact on financial development. Investment was also shown to improve financial development. Conclusions: The study recommended that policies should be directed towards creating a more inclusive financial system in order to improve the current level of financial inclusion, so as to achieve better financial development in Nigeria.

Opis:
Epidemiological studies on the impact of onchocerciasis control in some parts of Imo State, Nigeria was undertaken between 2008 and 2012 to determine the impact of annual ivermectin mass drug administration on clinical manifestation of Onchocerciasis. The survey took place in the nine villages of Okigwe local government area, which have base line data at Carter Center Imo/Abia project. Permission to carry out this survey was obtained from Ministry of Health as well as informed consent was obtained from the individual volunteers. Skin snip for microfilaria (mf), community microfilaria load (cmfl), physical examination, visual screening, were carried out among 960 volunteers comprising of 511 males and 499 females from age group 5-62+ in the sampled villages in accordance with the epidemiological evaluation of onchocerciasis protocol. The results shows 63.7% reduction against 47.2% nodule prevalence in 1995 to 14.3% nodule prevalence in 2012 (p<0.001). Similarly there is 36.3% reduction rate of mf prevalence from 51.8% mf rate to 33.0% in 2012 after 15 years of mass drug administration (p<0.005). CMFL is generally low among the sampled villages 0.90 mf per milligram (p<0.001). An Onchocercal symptom was found among individuals in the sampled villages 47.2%. Also mf prevalence was rare in age group 5-15(17%), subsequently increased with age and highest in age group 56-62+ (26%). However, because microfilaria (mf) was found among the subjects, is suggestive of its potential continued transmission and therefore Onchocerciasis is not yet eliminated.

Opis:
The antimicrobial activity of methanolic and aqueous extracts of Chrysophyllum albidum fruits was investigated against clinical isolates(Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia and Candida albicans). Qualitative phytochemistry of the plant indicated that the plant contained Flavonoids, Steroids, Alkaloids, Tannin, Anthraquinone and Cardiac glycosides while Saponins were reported absent. The maximum activity of the aqueous extracts in the test isolates was observed on Staphylococcus aureus, which showed clear zones with diameters of 24.0mm, 20.0mm and 16.5mm at concentrations of 100mg/ml, 50mg/ml and 25mg/ml respectively while it had low activity on Klebsiella pneumonia, with clear zones of inhibition of 15.0mm, 12.0mm and 10.5mm at same concentrations. On the other hand, Methanolic extracts activity on Staphylococcus aureus produced clear zones of 21.0mm, 17.5mm and 12.0mm at concentrations of 200mg/ml, 100mg/ml and 50mg/ml respectively as its best activity while the it had least observed activity on Klebsiella pneumonia with clear zones of 14.0mm, 11.5mm and 10.5mm at same concentrations. The aqueous extracts had greater activity than the methanolic extracts at same concentrations. Therefore, the fruit of the plant can be a good source of remedy in phytomedicine.

Opis:
Palynological analysis was carried out on twenty (20) ditch cutting samples from a section (1284.73–1496.57 m) of the Amansiodo-1 well, Anambra Basin, southeastern Nigeria with the aim of determining the age, biozone, and depositional environment of the sediments within the depth interval. The laboratory techniques of digesting sediments in hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids for silicates and carbonates removal were followed to process the samples for the recovery of palynomorphs. Fifty two (52) palynomorph specimens were recovered. An assemblage zone of Echitriporites trianguliformis Zone has been established. The section was dated to the upper Maastrichtian due to the occurrences of age diagnostic marker species such as: Cingulatisporites ornatus, Distaverrusporites simplex, Proteacidites sigalii, Dinogymnium cf auclaense, Echitriporites trianguliformis and Retidiporites magdalensis. Based on the palynomorph marine index and environmental indicator flora, the section was inferred to be deposited in marine to brackish (coastal) environments with little influence of fresh water.

Opis:
The capacity of Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) to produce voltage and concurrently treat abattoir waste water was investigated in MFCs that used 0.1M potassium ferricyanide (K3[Fe(CN)6] as catholytes. Physicochemical, electrochemical and Microbiological properties of the MFCs were monitored. The open circuit voltage (OCV) readings were taken at 3 hours interval and maximum OCV of 965mV was recorded. Also, The physicochemical characteristics of the MFCs revealed that the pH decreased by 0.2 after treatment; Chemical Oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, ammonia, and total nitrogen reduced by 88.4%, 65.56%, 43.88%, 60% and 60% respectively. However, Phosphate increased by 54%. The bacterial isolates from the raw abattoir wastewater were Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Enterococcus faecalis, Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli and Micrococcus luteus while Enterococcus faecalis, Bacillus cereus and Escherichia coli were isolated from the biofilms on the anode. Microbial fuel cells therefore have capacities for simultaneous waste water treatment and electricity generation.
