Bovine tuberculosis (BTB) in sheep (Ovis aries) is caused by Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium caprae. Even though sheep have been considered less sensitive to BTB than other ruminants, they have been subject to increasing numbers of tuberculosis cases and it has been suggested that they may act as a disease reservoir in some regions. Aim of the study: Following a report of tuberculous-like gross lesions (repeated cases of purulent or caseous lymphadenitis and a single case of serosal tubercles on the peritoneum) from veterinarians working in a slaughterhouse in the Małopolskie Voivodeship, southern Poland, the aim of this study was to conduct ante-mortem BTB diagnostics in three flocks with suspected BTB. The animals for testing were selected randomly from the flocks; a blood sample for interferon-γ release assay (IGRA) and a single tuberculin skin test (TST) was performed on each sheep. All TST results were negative. The IGRA result was positive in two ewes from the same flock (four and five years of age); these two sheep were tested microbiologically using Stonebrink and Löwenstein-Jensen media. No gross lesions suggesting BTB were observed, and the culture results were negative. Based on the positive IGRA results, together with its high specificity in sheep, and the potential risk to humans posed by consuming local unpasteurized dairy products, we recommend introducing serological BTB screening in sheep from this area, and subjecting the positive results to confirmation by culture.

The article analyses the productivity and competitiveness of Polish organic farms of different sizes, as well as their potential, production intensity and the costs. The analysis covers the period of 2013–2017. Information that was used in this study came from FADN farms and was included in the publications Technical-economic parameters according to agricultural farm groups participating in the Polish FADN from the years 2013–2017. Two methods were applied: a descriptive method with the use of tabulated summaries and a comparative method. In 2013–2017 the production potential, productivity and competitiveness of Polish ecological farms depended on their size. The largest farms with 50 ha of farmland turned out to be the most competitive, whereas those with 30–50 ha of farmland were found to be able to withstand competition. Farms that produce ecological products whose area is up to 30 ha were found uncompetitive despite subsidies.
Analizowano efektywność oraz konkurencyjności polskich gospodarstw ekologicznych o różnej wielkości obszarowej. Ocenie poddano także ich potencjał, intensywność oraz koszty produkcji. Badaniami objęto lata 2013–2017. Posłużono się informacjami z gospodarstw prowadzących rachunkowość Polski FADN, zawartymi w publikacjach Parametry techniczno-ekonomiczne według grup gospodarstw rolnych uczestniczących w Polskim FADN w latach 2013–2017. Zastosowano metody: opisową z wykorzystaniem zestawień tabelarycznych oraz porównawczą. W latach 2013–2017 potencjał produkcyjny, efektywność i konkurencyjność polskich gospodarstw ekologicznych uzależnione były od ich wielkości obszarowej. Gospodarstwami ekologicznymi konkurencyjnymi okazały się gospodarstwa obszarowo największe, powyżej 50 ha UR, zdolnymi zaś do konkurencji o powierzchni 30–50 ha UR. Gospodarstwa prowadzące produkcję ekologiczną na powierzchni do 30 ha UR pomimo uzyskiwanych dopłat nie miały zdolności konkurencyjnej.

The next decade was announced by WHO as the Decade of Healthy Aging. This is the answer to the social issue of highly developed countries, which is the aging of the society. In this context, there is the problem of active participation of seniors in social life, and especially the prevention of their social marginalization. Hence, projects that counteract exclusion and support active aging processes largely refer to modern technologies. Searching for answers to these questions and dilemmas, this text adopts an interdisciplinary approach, situating undertaken analyzes in the context of theories of aging, motivation as well as learning and using new technologies. The conclusions of the research undertaken – theoretical and empirical studies – undermine the hypothesis of digital exclusion of seniors perceived as the age group category. In the light of this research, it seems that education is the factor that influences the development of digital divide and digital inequalities within the community.

One of them is their lack of digital competences, which in consequence leads to their exclusion from modern social life. Given that modern Western societies are rapidly aging, this problem is becoming a social issue that needs to be addressed. A significant part of society must not be allowed to live as outcasts. In this situation, a question arises whether contemporary seniors are definitively excluded, or is age not an apparent premise in their case, and the problem lies elsewhere? The analysis of the collected empirical material revealed that the variable determining the level and type of social participation in virtual society is not age, but the level of education. Therefore, contrary to the prevailing views, seniors are not at risk of information exclusion and it is difficult to consider them as digital immigrants. Contrary to stereotypes, seniors are more distant, selective and pragmatic; independence allows them not to imitate culture and lifestyles, but to create them in contrast to the generation of their grandchildren.

Efficiency and competitiveness of Polish ecological farms differing in terms of economic size have been analyzed as well as their production potential, intensity and costs. The research was conducted in 2013-2016. Information was obtained from farm accountancy records of FADN included in the following publications: Technical-economic parameters according to groups of farms participating in the Polish edition of FADN in 2013-2016. The following methods have been used: descriptive, with the use of tables, and comparative. In 2013-2016, production potential, efficiency and competitiveness of ecological farms depended on their economic size. Farms with an economic size of 25-50 thousand euro and 50-100 thousand euro using, respectively: 37.7 and 70.3 ha AL, turned out to be able to cope with competition. However, farms with smaller areas and smaller economic size were not able to withstand competition. Farms able to withstand competition gained positive income from management in 2013-2016, however in farms without competitive abilities, this was negative. In farms with competitive ability, with an economic size of 25-50 thousand euro, payment for own labor was 1.5 times higher than the average wage in the domestic economy and in farms with an economic size of 50-100 thousand euro, it was nearly three times higher. Agricultural holdings without competitive abilities (below 25 thousand euro) did not achieve parity of own labor input return.
Dokonano oceny efektywności oraz konkurencyjności polskich gospodarstw ekologicznych o różnej wielkości ekonomicznej. Analizowano także ich potencjał produkcyjny, intensywność oraz koszty produkcji. Badaniami objęto lata 2013-2016. Wykorzystano informacje z gospodarstw prowadzących rachunkowość polski FADN, zawarte w publikacjach: Parametry techniczno-ekonomiczne według grup gospodarstw rolnych uczestniczących w Polskim FADN w latach 2013-2016. Zastosowano metody opisową z wykorzystaniem zestawień tabelarycznych oraz porównawczą. W latach 2013-2016 potencjał produkcyjny, efektywność i konkurencyjność polskich gospodarstw ekologicznych uzależnione były od ich wielkości ekonomicznej. Zdolnymi do konkurencji okazały się gospodarstwa o wielkości ekonomicznej 25-50 tys. euro i 50-100 tys. euro użytkujące odpowiednio 37,7 i 70,3 ha UR. Gospodarstwa o niewielkiej wielkości ekonomicznej i obszarowej, pomimo uzyskiwanych dopłat nie miały zdolności konkurencyjnej. Gospodarstwa zdolne do konkurencji uzyskały w latach 2013-2016 dodatni dochód z zarządzania, w gospodarstwach niemających zdolności konkurencyjnej był on ujemny. W gospodarstwach zdolnych do konkurencji o wielkości ekonomicznej 25-50 tys. euro opłata pracy własnej była 1,5 razy większa od średniego wynagrodzenia w gospodarce narodowej, a w gospodarstwach 50-100 tys. euro – prawie trzykrotnie. Gospodarstwa niemające zdolności konkurencyjnej (poniżej 25 tys. euro) nie osiągnęły parytetowej opłaty pracy własnej.

Introduction. In spite of the rapid development in various communication-support technologies for those waking up from a coma, studies describing the sole process of reconstructing communication in this group of patients are scarce. Objective. The aim of this study was to analyze communication reactions in a minimal state of consciousness and describe the nonverbal behaviours characteristic for each stages significant for the therapy of communication. Materials and method. 18 severely brain-injured patients in a minimal state of consciousness participated in the half-year observation study, which included people experiencing at least 4 weeks of consciousness disorder/coma. Age of patients 25±5 years. Psychological assessment included: observation of various attempts of communications undertaken by patients, caregivers and family interview, the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) and Individual Communication Sheet. Results. Data analysis showed a significant increase in preverbal communication, both in primal and sensory areas when compared between Stage II (GCS=6–8 points) and Stage III (GCS=9–12 points). After a time, primary communication reached a high level. Patients produced communication attempts from the behaviour organization level, and an increase in the nonverbal communication level was noted. Based on observations, nonverbal communication profiles for each stage of waking up from a coma were introduced. Conclusions. It was found that in the process of waking up from a coma the patients communicate with the use of the preverbal level of primal communication, the sensory and behaviour organization activities. The characteristics of the communication reactions show that in Stage III there is a significant increase in two preverbal communication areas: primal and sensory acts, when compared with Stage II.

Celem pracy było wykonanie badań numerycznych konwekcyjnej wymiany ciepła. Analizy numeryczne przeprowadzono w układzie dwuwymiarowym. Zrealizowano je przy użyciu nowoczesnego programu komputerowego Ansys Mechanical CFD-Flo. Wymiana ciepła dotyczyła pokojowego grzejnika płytowego, płaskiego umieszczonego na ścianie z oknem. Utworzono kilka wariantów obliczeń. Zadano pięć, różnych wartości współczynnika przejmowania ciepła α na oknie. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań można stwierdzić jakie są różnice wartości temperatury oraz prędkości powietrza przy różnych, zadanych wartościach strumienia ciepła na oknie oraz jak kształtuje się współczynnik przejmowania ciepła α, decydujący o intensywności wymiany ciepła.
The purpose of the work was to perform numerical tests of convective heat exchange. Numerical analyzes were carried out in a two-dimensional system. They were realized using the modern Ansys Mechanical CFD-Flo computer program. The heat exchange concerned a room-mounted flat plate heater mounted on a wall with a window. Several calculation options have been created. Five different values of the heat transfer factor α on the window were given. On this basis of the conducted tests it is possible to determine the differences in temperature and air velocity at different values of the heat flux on the window and how the heat transfer coefficient α is determined which determines the intensity of heat exchange.

This paper deals with the stability problem of three stator current error-based estimators of induction motor speed, especially in the regenerating operation mode. The stability of the adaptive full-order observer (AFO) and two model reference adaptive systems (MRASs) based on a stator current error (MRASCC and MRASCV) is briefly analysed, and the stability borders are determined and compared. It is shown that MRASCV speed estimator is stable in the whole operation range including the regenerating mode without any modifications. The stability enhancement method for AFO and MRASCC estimators is described, and the solution for their stability improvement is proposed. Torque-speed characteristics of the analysed MRAStype estimators in a wide range of drive speed and load torque changes are given, as well as the behaviour of estimators during transients is compared. The theoretical analysis and simulation test results are validated by experimental tests.

This short article constitutes an introductory part of the Special Section (SS) on State and Parameter Estimation Methods in Sensorless Drives. In the current issue of the journal, the first part of this section is published. Accepted articles are focussed mainly on estimation of the state variables and parameters for vector-controlled induction motor (IM) drives, using different concepts, such as different types of Kalman filters (KFs) and model reference adaptive systems (MRASs). The KF was also proposed for brushless DC motor (BLDC). Also, neural networks (NNs) have been proposed for mechanical state variables’ estimation of the drive system with elastic couplings.
