Opis:
A matrix generalization of Kronecker's lemma is presented with assumptions that make it possible not only the unboundedness of the condition number considered by Anderson and Moore (1976) but also other sequences of real matrices, not necessarily monotone increasing, symmetric and nonnegative definite. A useful matrix decomposition and a well-known equivalent result about convergent series are used in this generalization.

Opis:
Bone tissue is a dynamic tissue, possessing different functional requirements at different scales. This layered organization indicates the existence of a hierarchical structure, which can be characterized to distinguish macro-scale from micro-scale levels. Structurally, both scales can be linked by the use of classic multiscale homogenization techniques. Since in bone tissue each micro-scale domain is distinct form its neighbour, applying a classic multiscale homogenization technique to a complete bone structure could represent an inadmissible computational cost. Thus, this work proposes a homogenization methodology that is computationally efficient, presenting a reduced computational cost, and is capable to define the homogenized microscale mechanical properties of the trabecular bone highly heterogeneous medium. Methods: The methodology uses the fabric tensor concept in order to define the material principal directions. Then, using an anisotropic phenomenological law for bone tissue correlating the local apparent density with directional elasticity moduli, the anisotropic homogenized material properties of the micro-scale patch are fully defined. To validate the developed methodology, several numerical tests were performed, measuring the sensitivity of the technique to changes in the micro-patch size and preferential orientation. Results: The results show that the developed technique is robust and capable to provide a consistent material homogenization. Additionally, the technique was combined with two discrete numerical techniques: the finite element method and radial point interpolation meshless method. Conclusions: Structural analyses were performed using real trabecular patches, showing that the proposed methodology is capable to accurately predict the micro-scale patch mechanical behavior in a fraction of the time required by classic homogenization techniques.

Opis:
The distribution of product of two normally distributed variables come from the first part of the XX Century. First works about this issue were [1] and [2] showed that under certain conditions the product could be considered as a normally distributed.
A more recent approach is [3] that studied approximation to density function of the product using three methods: numerical integration, Monte Carlo simulation and analytical approximation to the result using the normal distribution. They showed as the inverse variation coefficient μ/σ increases, the distribution of the product of two independent normal variables tends towards a normal distribution.
Our study is focused in Ware and Lad approaches. The objective was studying which factors have more influence in the presence of normality for the product of two independent normal variables. We have considered two factors: the inverse of the variation coefficient value μ/σ and the combined ratio (product of the two means divided by standard deviation): μ₁μ₂/σ for two normal variables with the same variance.
Our results showed that for low values of the inverse of the variation coefficient (less than 1) normal distribution is not a good approximation for the product. Another one, influence of the combined ratio value is less than influence of the inverse of coefficients of variation value.

Introduction and Objective. The purpose of this study was to select in a structured manner the relevant articles with scientific recognition, and simultaneously identify the characteristics of these publications that may scientifically enrich the theme in a portfolio of papers. The theme involves ergonomics in milk production as a criterion for evaluating and improving organizational performance in the milking sector. Materials and Method. The study used ProKnow-C as a theoretical instrument for intervention. Results. The main results show: i) a bibliographic portfolio of 18 items aligned with the view adopted by researchers which served as a theoretical framework for this research; ii) The article entitled “Wrist positions and movements as possible risk factors during machine milking”, by Marianne Stål, Gert-Åke Hansson and Ulrich Moritz in 1999 and published in the Journal of Applied Ergonomics presented the highest scientific recognition, iii) the authors highlighted in the bibliographic portfolio or in its references researching the subject are Gert-Åke Hansson, Marianne Stål and Stefan Pinzke, and iv) the International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics shows the highest number of scientific articles in the bibliographic portfolio. Conclusions. The studies selected using the methodology indicate research in ergonomics focused on the production of milk in rural areas, specifically in the milking sector, are generally related to the health and safety of the workers.

Opis:
Nitrate assimilation in the plant cell is mainly regulated by the enzyme nitrate reductase (EC 1.6.6.1), which catalyzes the nitrate to nitrite reduction. Nitrate reductase activity (NRA) is measured at the major nitrate reduction site, which can be the root or shoot, depending on the species. The in vivo assay has often been used for NRA measurement, and protocol also usually varies with the species. The goals of this study were: (1) to identify the major nitrate reduction site in seedlings of two tree species, Eucalyptus urophylla and Khaya senegalensis, and (2) to optimize the in vivo nitrate reductase assay at the major nitrate reduction site in these species. Healthy seedlings aged 180 and 160 days, respectively, were selected for NRA measurement in fully expanded leaves and main root. After identifying the main nitrate reduction site of each species, the effects of variations in temperature, nitrate concentration and pH in the incubation medium were assessed. The results showed that the leaf and the root are the major nitrate reduction site of Eucalyptus urophylla and Khaya senegalensis, respectively. The optimal conditions for the in vivo assay in the leaf were 35 °C, $KNO_3$ 100 mM, and pH 7.0, whereas for the root they were 30 °C, $KNO_3$ 100 mM, and pH 7.5.
