Opis:
Small closed depressions are a common feature of the landscape of Central Poland. Their origin has been connected to various morphogenetic processes but most of the forms located in upland areas are the result of the melting of buried ice in the recession phase of the ice sheet of the Warta Stadial. A study of four sites with clusters of depressions, is being carried out in the Łódź Upland to compare the lithological features of their infillings. The analyses of the sediments have allowed to distinguish four lithological units and to display the variation between the infillings of the studied basins. Some of the depressions do not contain biogenic sediments of the Eemian Interglacial or the Early Vistulian. It indicates the presence of differences in the local geological conditions and a different course of the process of filling in of the basins.

Opis:
The Warta River valley was greatly influenced by the ice sheet of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). A small peatland located in the Warta drainage system is here used as a palaeoarchive of climatic and habitat changes during the Late Glacial (Weichselian). The Ługi sediment profile was investigated using multi-proxy (pollen, Chironomidae, Cladocera and geochemistry) analyses that recorded changes in a fluviogenic sedimentary depression. After the Poznań Phase (LGM), Ługi functioned as an oxbow lake that was cut off from the active river channel as a result of fluvial erosion. Since that time, the Warta River has flowed only along the section now occupied by the Jeziorsko Reservoir. Sedimentation of lacustrine deposits started at the beginning of the Late Glacial. Summer temperature reconstructions indicate cool Oldest and Younger Dryas, but no clear cooling in the Older Dryas. During the Younger Dryas the palaeolake was completely occupied by a peatland (fen), which periodically dried out during the Holocene. Investigation of this site has tracked the reaction of the habitat to climatic, hydrological and geomorphological changes throughout the Late Weichselian.

This paper presents the results of a study on the content of lithogeochemical components (organic matter, Na, K, Mg, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu and Zn) and grain-size composition of mineral matter in the bottom sediments of Morzycko Lake (Myślibórz Lakeland, NW Poland). This lake is large (342.7 ha) and deep (69 m). The catchment has a typical forested character (mainly in the middle part of the Słubia River valley) with agricultural area (mainly in the upland areas north of the lake). The diversity of concentrations of metals was analysed based on 44 samples from 22 representative sites, including surface sediments and sediments from 5 cm below the current lake bed. The results showed that the chemical composition and granulometry of bottom sediments depends on contemporary morphogenetic processes in the catchment of the Słubia River. Geochemical and grain-size indices varied due to changes in biological productivity, intensity of weathering of postglacial material making up the catchment, and potential for migration of metals to the lake with surface or underground runoff. An important aspect in assessing the degree of enrichment of the sediments in trace elements is the location of shallow parts of the lake near the tourist districts of Moryń.

Opis:
The results of geochemical assays on biogenic sediments filling a fossil lacustrine basin at Wąwelnica, in the Szczecin Hills, within the left-bank part of the Oder River catchment are presented. The data reveal a natural Holocene sedimentation sequence similar to that found for other sites in central Europe. The geochemical record of palaeo-environmental changes, which may be a consequence of human activities in the proximity of the site, is distinctly bipartite. The part of the profile corresponding to the lacustrine sediment accumulation during the Greenlandian occasionally shows an increased mineral content and an elevated catchment erosion index. An incidental presence of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic communities is confirmed by archaeological evidence from a few sites in the Szczecin Hills. More distinct episodes of mineral matter supply and more pronounced changes in geochemical indicators can be inferred as occurring from the onset of the older part of the Atlantic until the Older Subboreal. Most of the flint artefacts discovered along with a collection of vessel fragments in the Mierzyn-Dołuje area are associated with the Neolithic occupation. However, changes in the deposits’ geochemistry do not reflect all the settlement stages associated with the consecutive human groups identified by archaeological evidence. Possible reasons include a low sediment accumulation rate having restricted peat mass accretion and prevented the storing of any higher amounts of water. This, along with the climate-change-caused lowering of the water table, could have periodically stopped the accumulation of autochthonous organic matter. In addition, intensified human activities coincided with periods of stable and low water level in the basin. On the other hand, breaks in human activity correspond with moist Holocene stages and local flooding events.

The article presents the results of a study on sediment deposition processes in the palaeolake shore zone, at the multilayered Serteya II archaeological site in Western Russia. In recent years, geomorphological, palaeopedological and palaeoecological research was undertaken in strict cooperation with archaeological fieldwork. The Serteya II site occupies a substantial area of a kame terrace and biogenic plain within a palaeolake basin. From an archaeological point of view, the site is represented by few Mesolithic artefacts, but mostly by remnants of hunter–gatherer–fisher communities attributed in the Russian scientific tradition to the Neolithic period and dated from 6300 BC to 2000 BC. Later, the area was used by people in the Bronze Age, Early Iron Age and Early Middle Ages. The integration of archaeological and multidisciplinary palaeoenvironmental research allowed the natural and human induced deposition of mineral-organic and minerogenic sediments to be reconstructed, as well as the development of structures in the lake shore zone. The changes from lacustrine to fluvial system were documented and the human impact is recorded mostly in the acceleration of slope processes.

This paper presents the Late Glacial stage of the development of the Białe Ługi peatland in the southern Holy Cross Mountains, based on a comprehensive palaeoenvironmental data. A complex analysis of palynology, Cladocera, sedimentology, geochemistry and 14C dating were used. Organic deposition was initiated during the Oldest Dryas. The sedimentary record of the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems reflects considerable difference between cooler (Oldest, Older and Younger Dryas) and warmer phases (Bølling and Allerød). Periods of intensified interaction between aeolian processes and peatland are related to stages of disappearing vegetation and changes in aquatic invertebrate communities. We therefore suggest that peatlands were created as a result of local lithological-structural, tectonic, hydrogeological and morphological conditions, and the peatland development rate was largely influenced by changing climatic conditions, which determined local vegetation development, intensity of denudation processes and water level changes. The results validate significance of selection and use of several methods, as well as value of biogenic deposits from the Białe Ługi peatland as archives of past climate change in the Małopolska Upland. Relatively stable water conditions and uninterrupted biogenic sedimentation in the Late Glacial that were provided by the geological structure and relief suggest the studied peatland is a leading one in the region.

Opis:
Mires are common in the landscape of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, but they are rarely explored by Earth scientists. In addition to numerous morphological depressions filled with biogenic sediments, mires also occur within river valley, usually upstream from gaps. The intensification of marsh formation within the Białka River valley (left-side tributary of Krztynia, upper Pilica catchment) may have been influenced by the occurrence of poorly permeable, fluvial silty sands in the bedrock. Infilling of the studied depression at Młyny was accomplished via fluvial sedimentation characterised by local aggradation interrupted by carbonate precipitation, and sedentation of autochthonous organic matter. The former sediment type is represented mostly by mineral-organic aggraded silt with a dominant fine fraction, occurring mostly in the basal part of the studied core, and sand fraction in the top interval of the core, superjacent to calcareous-clay gyttja. Ash content reaches up to 87% and Fe concentrations are periodically elevated (30–48 mg/g). Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) also occurs in the studied oxbow mire deposit, exceeding 40% in some intervals, which indicates that a more important part was played by groundwaters in the water balance of the Białka valley. This periods were periodically interrupted due to higher flooding activity and recorded by mineral sediments characterised by specific granulometric composition, and an elevated percentage of organic matter deposited as rhythmists. Elevated concentrations of trace elements noted in a horizon dated at 1885±105 BP by means of radiocarbon dating may point to human impact on the environment due to the adaptation of economy to local conditions. The geochemical record of human activity is corroborated by archaeological data from various parts of the Białka valley catchment. The reason for the concentration of trace elements being highest in the top interval of the studied core is the intense economic development of Silesia-Kraków region, and the associated deforestation, mining and metallurgy.

Opis:
Sediment geochemistry and lithology were studied in Gostyń Lake in the eastern part of the Myślibórz Lakeland (part of the Western Pomeranian Lake District). The research was undertaken because relatively shallow lake basins without ground supply contribute to the intensification of water circulation through evaporation. Late Glacial and Holocene phases in the evolution of Gostyń Lake were reconstructed based on selected geochemical indicators (Fe/Mn, S/Fe, Na/K, Mg/Ca, Cu/Zn, Na+K+Mg/Ca, Fe/Ca) as well as on the presence of human activity (Stone Age, Bronze Age, Early Iron Age and Roman Period). Also, the geochemical and archaeological data were correlated. Generally, the lithogeochemical composition variability in the Gostyń Lake deposits was found to be controlled by changes in: 1) the climate, related to the biogenic accumulation environment, 2) land cover in the Late Glacial and Holocene, and 3) human activities. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed four major variable groups responsible for the changes: hydroclimatic variations which determined the type of sedimentary conditions during the Holocene climate optimum; changes in the organic matter provenance (along with conditions favouring sulphide precipitation); and denudation processes in the Gostyń Lake catchment. The methods used allowed the distribution of ancient settlement to be traced. Interpretation of the geochemical indicators (Fe/Mn, Cu/Zn, S/Fe, Ca/Fe) should involve many more factors which, in the relevant literature, are treated as measures of changes in redox conditions

Opis:
Fens have been forming in the river valleys of central Poland since the Bølling and went through a transformation from fully aquatic to semiterrestrial habitats during the Younger Dryas/Holocene transition. This drove plant and invertebrate communities and left a distinct pattern in chemical sediment composition, which is why river valley peatlands are sensitive palaeo-archives of climatic, hydrological and edaphic changes. Here we reconstruct the Late Weichselian history of the Bęczkowice fen in the upper Luciąża River valley using geochemical, pollen, Cladocera and Chironomidae proxies. Pollen-based age estimation indicates that the analysed peat sequence dates from the Bølling to Early Holocene. The layers 190-170 cm and 125-105 cm of the studied core were reworked by fluvial processes. Chironomidae and Cladocera communities indicate mostly limnetic conditions during the Allerød and early Younger Dryas. Peatland pools were supplied mostly by Luciąża River floods, but also by groundwater. Since the onset of the Holocene, the water level has dropped, eliminating aquatic midges and water fleas, and supporting taxa typical of astatic waters and wet soil.

Typ osadu świadczy o limnicznej przeszłości zagłębień w zachodniej i południowej części torfowiska. The peat bog near the village of Bydlin in the Silesian-Cracovian Upland was subjected to geochemical, palaeobotanical and malacological analyses. The mire is located in a subsidence basin in a carbonate karst area. The sequences of biogenic deposits was identified based on materials obtained from drillings (maximum depth of 4,20 m). The sedimentary sequence in the studied peatbog is highly differentiated, there are: brown moss peat, sedge-moss peat, tall-sedge peat and lake deposits, which occur mainly in calcareous gyttja, clay-calcareous gyttja and lacustrine chalk. The presence of limnic deposits indicate lake phase in the sedimentary basins in the western and southern part of the mire. Based on the content of the main lithogeochemical components of the sediments, the composition and structure of faunistic assemblages, variability of the pollen curves and botanical composition of the peat deposits, it was possible to characterize the features of natural palaeoenvironment, peat bog evolution, and to determine the stratigraphic position of biogenic sediments.

We combined radiocarbon and 210Pb dating with elemental geochemistry, stable lead isotopes, and palaeobotanical analyses. The core we investigated covers a period from 4200 ± 100 BC to the present, with a peat accumulation rate varying between 0.001 and 0.243 cm y-1. Heavy metal concentrations, Pb isotopic ratios, and a palynological analysis revealed a significant impact of human activities in the past. The highest concentration and accumulation rate of Pb, were found around 1950 AD. The 206Pb/207Pb quotient ranged between 1.168 and 1.223, with average value around 1.198. Most of the interpretation was based on Pb and its stable isotopes; however, other elements were also important indicators of natural and anthropogenic environmental changes. Our results revealed similarities between the geochemical composition of the peatland studied and other peatlands from the Orava-Nowy Targ Basin.

Opis:
The research was conducted at the Kwiatków site,1 in the Koło Basin (Central Poland). It included a fragment of a low terrace and the valley floor of the Warta river valley. The archaeological investigation documented over 100 wells that archaeological material indicates are associated with the Przeworsk culture. Geomorphological, lithological and geochemical studies were carried out at the archaeological sites and their surroundings. Selected for the presentation were two wells whose fillings were carefully tested and subjected to geochemical and lithological analyses. The wells showed a slightly different content of artifacts, as well as differences in their grain-size distributions, the structure of their filling deposits, and their geochemistry. This allows us to conclude that the two wells were used differently, but also probably about a different course for how each well was filled after the end of its operation.

Opis:
W oparciu o wyniki składu chemicznego osadów organicznych w stanowisku Koźmin Las, przedstawiono rekonstrukcję warunków środowiskowych doliny Warty pod koniec allerödu i w młodszym dryasie. Do rekonstrukcji wykorzystano dane dotyczące zawartości materii organicznej, materii mineralnej, węglanu wapnia, odczynu oraz koncentracji makro- (Na, K, Mg, Ca, Fe, Mn) i mikropierwiastków (Cu, Zn i Pb). Do czynników kształtujących skład chemiczny późnovistuliańskich osadów organicznych w dolinie Warty zaliczono sorpcję metali przez materię organiczną i uwodnione tlenki żelaza, zmien-ność akumulacji minerałów ilastych w środowisku sedymentacyjnym, sposób zasilania ekosystemu oraz właściwości aku-mulacyjne roślin w stosunku do określonych pierwiastków.
The chemical composition of organic deposits from the site Koźmin Las are the basis of reconstruction of envi-ronment conditions of the Warta River valley at the end of the Alleröd and in the Younger Dryas. Environmental archives presented in this study, comprise organic matter content, mineral matter content, calcium carbonate content, reaction and macro- (Na, K, Mg, Ca, Fe, Mn) and microelements (Cu, Zn and Pb). The sorption of metals by organic matter and hydrated iron oxides, clay minerals accumulation variability in depositional environment, water relations of the ecosystem and bioac-cumulation of some elements are the factors determining the chemical composition of organic sediments in the Warta river valley.
