Opis:
The selection of suitable working fluid for simple and recuperative organic Rankine cycle (ORC) operating under subcritical, superheated and supercritical conditions are investigated. 11 fluids with critical temperature above 1500C are considered as potential candidates. Performance screening parameters such as net power output, thermal efficiency, turbine sizing parameter (SP) and volumetric flow ratio (VFR), exegetic parameters like irreversibility rate, fuel depletion ratio, and improvement potential rate of exergy destruction were also evaluated. Results indicate that R600a, R236fa and R1233dz(E) demonstrated the best performance for subcritical, superheated and supercritical simple ORC, respectively. R236fa and R1233dz(E) proved more suitable for subcritical/superheated and supercritical recuperative cycles, respectively. The system exegetic efficiency is reveal to be significantly higher in subcritical/superheated (61-65%) cycles compared to the supercritical (35-45%) cycle, the evaporator seen as the main source of exergy destruction, accounting for 17-37% of inlet exergy destroyed and about 8-24% in the turbine.

Opis:
One of the conditions for controlling the aerodynamics in the reaction chamber is designing a crevice volume on the surface of the piston head. The importance of the crevice volume is to contain the cool boundary layers generated as a resulting of the moving reactor piston. However, this crevice volume consequently drops the end gas pressure and temperature at the end of the stroke. The CFD study of the aerodynamic effect of a piston movement in a reaction chamber was modelled using the commercial code of Ansys Fluent and assuming a 2-Dimensional computational moving mesh. A starting optimal crevice volume of 282 mm3 was used for further optimisation. This resulted in five crevice lengths of 3 mm, 5 mm, 7 mm, 9 mm and 12 mm, respectively. The crevice height of 5 mm was found to improve the compressed gas pressure at the end of the stroke to about 2 bar and temperature about 17.7 K and also maintained a uniform temperature field, while that of 12 mm had the least peak compressed gas pressure. This study investigated the possible means of improving the peak pressure and temperature drop in a rapid compression machine by further optimisation of the crevice volume.

For years now, the continual degradation of soils in the tropics, and around the globe has continued to be one of the challenges facing humankind. Soil erosion is one of the factors gearing low food production, environmental pollution and degradation, acting like an hindrance towards the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) two (zero hunger) including SDG six (clean water and sanitation). The importance of saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) of a soil to Agriculturist, Environmentalist including Engineers cannot be exhausted, as this single hydro-physical soil property controls many processes in the soil system. An experiment was conducted to access the vulnerability of University of Abuja soils to erosion. Result of data analysis proves that the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the soils is slow to extremely slow with value recorded at (0.89 – 4.50 mm hr-1). Field data outcome presents a view that the soils of the area is mostly very compact to compact, with porosity value ranging from (1 – 21%). Saturated hydraulic conductivity estimation was done using hydro-physical models. The performance of the models were evaluated using Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) statistics. Outcome of the model comparation proves the two model as been able to effectively estimate the water flux of the area, presenting RMSE values at (5.67 and 2.41 respectively for the two models). The study thus concluded that for loss of arable land to be minimized or avoided and for environmental sustainability, ecological tool like planting of grasses including trees can be employed to salvage the impending case of soil erosion in the area.

Opis:
The study of tree-hole breeding mosquitoes was carried out in the tropical rainforest of Imo State Nigeria (two rural areas and two forest reserves in some parts of Orlu Senatorial Zone) between May – October 2002. Using standard entomological procedures, two macrohabitats (natural tree-holes and bamboo traps) and two microhabitats (leaf axils of cocoyams/pineapples and leaf axils of plantain/banana) were sampled for various mosquito species. Mosquitoes were recovered from all the various biotypes sampled. Types of mosquitoes species encountered, their relative abundance, as well as genera varied signifi cantly during the study (p<0.05). Four genera of mosquitoes: Aedes, Culex, Anopheles and Toxorhynchites were recovered while 16 species of mosquitoes encountered include: Aedes aegypti, Ae. africanus, Ae. simpsoni, Ae. albopictus, Ae. stokesi, Ae. taylori, Ae. apicoargenteus, Culex quinquefasciatus, Cx. nebulosus, Cx. trigripes, Cx. decens, Anopheles gambiae, An. funiestus, An. coustani and Toxorhynchites viridibasis. Most of the mosquitoes showed oviposition preferences for one or more habitats. The presence of Ae. africanus, Ae. simpsoni and Ae. aegypti indicate that the study areas were at risk of yellow fever epidemic. The presence of Anopheles and Culex species ensured endemicity of malaria and fi lariasis, while the recovery of Ae. albopictus in this region suggests a possible outbreak of dengue fever in future if not properly controlled.
