Opis:
The field study involved 4 sites and 15 samples according to the wind directions: North, East, South and West. The analysis was conducted through the use of Atomic Absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Ten types of heavy metals were identified as indicators for pollution namely Mg, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni, Cr, and Cd. The results indicated that the concentration of Fe was the most dominant per specific distances and depths and exceeded the minimum standard in North, East and West directions. While Cu was the second most dominant with concentration exceeding minimum standard per specific distance and depth, mainly in the West direction. The results have shown presence of bacterial species including Pseudomonas, Mirococcus, Actinomyces, Neisseria, Bacillus and Klebsiella. These pathogens can infect wounds and cause sepsis and mortality and can even occur with such organisms to cause secondary infection. These groups of organisms are almost impossible to control since they are ubitiquous.

Opis:
This paper proposes a new synchronization scheme called compound-combination synchronization. The scheme is investigated using six chaotic Josephson junctions evolving from different initial conditions based on the drive-response configuration via the active backstepping technique. The technique is applied to achieve compound-combination synchronization of: (i) six identical third order resistive-capacitive-inductive-shunted Josepshon junctions (RCLSJJs) (with three as drive and three as response systems); (ii) three third order RCLSJJs (as drive systems) and three second order resistive-capacitive-shunted Josepshon junctions (RCSJJs (as response systems). In each case, sufficient conditions for global asymptotic stability for compound-combination synchronization to any desired scaling factors are achieved. Numerical simulations are employed to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the compound-combination synchronization scheme. The result shows that this scheme could be used to vary the junction signal to any desired level and also give a better insight into synchronization in biological systems wherein different organs of different dynamical structures and orders are involved. The scheme could also provide high security in information transmission due to the complexity of its dynamical formulation.

Opis:
Natural clay has been considered as a potential absorbent for removing pollutants from water and waste water. Nonetheless, the effective application of clay for water treatment is limited due to small surface area and presence of net negative surface charge, leading to it low adsorption capacity. The absorption capacity was boosted via intercalation of CaO derived from snail shell (SS). The methylene blue sorption potential, PZC, and the surface area of unmodified clay sample were substantially enhanced by the intercalation process. The process of sorption of MB from solution was analyzed using five different isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Harkins-Jura, and Halsey isotherm equations). The value of the Langmuir monolayer sorption capacity qm (mg/g) increased from 50.12 to 88.71, PZC values increased from 4.50 to 7.40, and the surface area (m2/g) value increased from 27 m2/g to 123 m2/g after the intercalation process. The experimental data were fitted into two kinetic models: Lagergren pseudo-first order and the chemisorptions pseudo-second order. It was observed that chemisorptions pseudo-second order kinetic model described the sorption process with high coefficients of determination (r2) better than pseudo first other kinetic models. The modification caused no change in the clay surficial microstructure but increased the lattice spacing of the clay framework.

Opis:
This study investigated genetic diversity among 23 cassava genotypes  in two-agro-ecological zones (Ibadan and Mokwa), Nigeria. The experiment was conducted using a randomized complete block design with three replicates. The cassava genotypes were evaluated for tuber yield, fresh weight of tuber, number of tu- bers, tuber girth and length, dry matter and chlorophyll concentration. The data collected were subjected to analysis of variance and differences among the genotypes were computed using Duncan’s multiple range test. Single linkage cluster and FASTCLUS  analysis were used to group  the cassava genotypes. Genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variability, heritability and genetic advance were also evaluated. Genotype, environ- ment and genotype × environment interaction (GEI) were significant (P < 0.01) for most of the traits evalu- ated. The magnitude of the environment was higher compared to genotype and GEI. Comparative mean per- formance varied from location to location. Tuber yield ranged from 0.32 for 92/0325 to 0.90 kg for 99/3073 with mean of 0.58 kg, and 0.16 kg for 82/00058 to 0.67 kg for 98/0581 with mean of 0.35 kg in Mokwa. Higher genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variability were observed in Ibadan than Mokwa, for most of the characters. The interrelationships among the characters revealed the superiority of some cassava genotypes for a character  in one location and not in the other location. However, breeding potentials exists among the cassava genotypes across the two environments.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to examine the mean reversion in health expenditure of 45 sub-Saharan African countries. The series on current health expenditure (percent of GDP in total), obtained from the World Development Indicators, each spanned the years 2000–2017. We employed the Fourier unit root test, which allows modelling structural breaks, to deal with any such breaks that could arise as a result of a small sample size (18 years) of data available on health expenditure of the selected countries. The results showed evidence of mean reversion in the health spending pattern of 27 sub-Saharan African countries. There is evidence of nonmean reversion in the health expenditure pattern of the remaining 18 countries considered. We further investigate the link between health expenditure and health outcome, using infant mortality rate and under-five mortality rate as health outcome variables. An inverse association could be observed between the infant mortality rate and health expenditure and between the under-five mortality rate and health expenditure in 24 sub-Saharan African countries. On the other hand, in 13 other sub-Saharan African countries we observed a positive association between the variables. The findings of this study could be of great importance to healthcare delivery programmes in the studied countries.
Negatywną zależność zaobserwowano w 24 krajach, a pozytywną – w 13. Wyniki niniejszego badania mogą mieć duże znaczenie dla programów opieki zdrowotnej w badanych krajach.

There are ample facts that the whole world is facing an ecological crisis by reason of heavy deforestation. Thus, this study assesses the influence of deforestation on some selected villages in Borgu Local Government Area, Niger State. Data were collected from members of the community using a set of structured questionnaire. This was then analyzed using descriptive statistics (percentages and frequency count). Findings reveal that the major occupation is trading (33.3%), followed by farming (30%). The causes of deforestation in the study area include: fuelwood removal (31.7%), urbanization (25.0), logging (20.0%), subsistence farming (15.8%), population growth and overpopulation (3.3%), commercial farming (2.5%) and inequitable distribution of wealth and power (1.7%). Global warming (31.7%) was the major effect generated by deforestation in the study area, followed by soil erosion (24.2%). Encouragement of better agroforestry practices (30.8%) was seen as the major strategy for reducing deforestation by the respondents. Other best practices include: afforestation (27.5%), public enlightenment (13.3%), enforcement of forest land and policy (12.5%), forest education (8.3%), forest conservation and preservation (7.5%).

Land cover change (LCC) is important to assess the land use/land cover changes with respect to the development activities like irrigation. The region selected for the study is Vaal Harts Irrigation Scheme (VHS) occupying an area of approximately 36, 325 hectares of irrigated land. The study was carried out using Land sat data of 1991, 2001, 2005 covering the area to assess the changes in land use/land cover for which supervised classification technique has been applied. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) index was also done to assess vegetative change conditions during the period of investigation. By using the remote sensing images and with the support of GIS the spatial pattern of land use change of Vaal Harts Irrigation Scheme for 15 years was extracted and interpreted for the changes of scheme. Results showed that the spatial difference of land use change was obvious. The analysis reveals that 37.86% of additional land area has been brought under fallow land and thus less irrigation area (18.21%). There is an urgent need for management program to control the loss of irrigation land and therefore reclaim the damaged land in order to make the scheme more viable.

Opis:
Neck circumference (NC) is a marker of upper body subcutaneous adipose tissue distribution. Although it is commonly used in many parts of the world it appears to lack reference values as an indicator of metabolic and cardiovascular risk in the Nigerian population. A total of 2000 apparently healthy adults participated in this study. NC was measured using a non-stretchable tape between the mid-cervical spine and mid-anterior neck of each participant standing upright. In men the NC was measured just below the laryngeal prominence (Adam’s apple). Data was summarized using descriptive and inferential statistics. The alpha level was set at 0.05. The Nigerian men under study had significantly higher NC values than the women (t = 36.986, p = 0.001). The mean values for men and women below 20 years, between 21 and 30 years, 31 and 40 years, 41 and 50 years, and 51 and 60 years old were 37.29 ± 1.96 cm and 32.45 ± 1.84 cm, 37.69 ± 2.16 cm and 33.12 ± 2.52 cm, 37.67 ± 2.25 cm and 32.46 ± 2.24 cm, 38.01 ± 2.49 cm and 33.36 ± 2.67 cm, and 37.59 ± 2.29 cm and 33.14 ± 1.78 cm, respectively. The 95 percentile values for men and women younger than 20 years, 31-40 years, 41-50 years, and 51-60 years were 41cm and 36 cm, 42 cm and 38 cm, 41cm and 37 cm, 43 cm and 39 cm, and 42 cm and 37 cm, respectively. Based on age-and-sex neck circumference reference values, the means and percentiles can be used as indicators of acceptable and abnormal NC values for Nigerian adults between the ages of 18 to 60 years.

Opis:
This paper described and contextualized participatory development of demand-driven curriculum for career-ready e-extension services in Nigeria as introduced by the Sasakawa Africa Fund for Extension Education. The stages of participatory development were participatory need assessment, participatory stakeholders’ workshop and validation among 124 stakeholders selected as key informants in relation to agricultural extension training, delivery, end users and policy makers. The stakeholders were grouped as follows: community leaders and policy makers; extension agencies / organisations / institutions / employers; farmers; input suppliers / marketers / agro-based traders / other value actors; and potential candidate groups. Stakeholder meetings were held separately with different groups three times, and then a combined meeting took place. The aggregated major decisions/consensus were subjected to content analysis using ATLAS.ti. The validation process included reading of each agreed decision to all participants, then participants indicated their agreement or otherwise, which led to either rejection or acceptance of the decision. This paper concludes that participatory curriculum development has enhanced the stakeholders to identify areas of demand-driven training in response to community needs. The stakeholders preferred more online than face-to-face training. The major perceived advantages of e-extension were reduced risk, time and cost effectiveness while infrastructural and human challenges were the perceived challenges that could possibly hinder the smooth running of eextension.

Sulphuric acid leach solution of waste printed circuit boards (PCBs) contains predominantly copper and iron with later remain problematic during electrowinning of the formal. In this study, performance of Dowex M 4195 resin for recovery of copper and nickel from polymetallic sulphate leach solution of waste PCBs was investigated by batch experiments. It was observed that at pH 0.5, about 45.2 and 3.6 % Cu2+ and Ni2+ was selectively recovered respectively. Recovery efficiency of Ni2+ increased with increase in pH from 0.5 -5.0 while pH2 was optimum for the recovery of Cu2+. Sharp increase in co-recovery of Fe3+/Fe2+ was observed at pH above 2 with that of Zn2+ and Co2+ became low due to hindrance from binding site by high concentration of Cu2+. Adsorption data obtained for Cu2+ and Ni2+ were tested with adsorption isotherms as well as kinetics. It is shown that adsorption of Cu2+2+ was well fitted to both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm. Kinetics of Cu2+ and Ni2+ fitted into Pseudo-first and well fitted to second order. Reuse studies shows that the resin strong affinities for Cu2+ and Ni2+ remain unchanged.
