Opis:
Nigeria has greater challenges when it comes to water development and management. The current water resources development and supply status is unacceptably low and needs a major transformation. With the rapid growth in population, urbanization, industrialization and competition for economic development, water resource has become vulnerable to depletion and degradation. Management of this valuable resource is determined by its acceptability and utilization in terms of quantity and quality. Due to imbalance between demand and availability, management approaches are facing various ethical dilemas. This paper therefore considers the water supply and sanitation situation in the country and the challenges facing the sector. The paper calls for institutional reforms and review of policy targets, define key elements for the development of action and investment plans as well as provide some guidelines in order to minimize duplication and maximize effectiveness. The paper also suggested strategies and viable framework/agenda for sustainable water supply and emphasizes that the machinery of water resources development and management needs an urgent overhauling with the aim of streamlining the overlapping functions of the various agencies that have operated the system up till now. More importantly, the paper suggested integrated approaches/strategies for sustainable management as well as offers relevant policy recommendations for water resources management in Nigeria.

Opis:
The gully erosion is the most serious environmental problem in Agulu-Nanka, Southeastern Nigeria. Present study focused on characterization of geo-environmental factor in the gully affected areas to prevent future problems. The study investigates geotechnical analysis and catchment management of gully erosion in Agulu - Nanka, Anambra State, Nigeria. The major objectives were: to provide geotechnical parameters and data (permeability, liquidity, plasticity, consistency, moisture content and compaction) of the soils available in Agulu Nanka, Anambra State. The method of data collection employed was through field work which involves the use of GPS to capture the coordinates of the gully sites and tape rule to measure the width, depth, and length of the gullies. GIS techniques were used in data analysis. A total of 14 gully sites were coordinated and mapped, the result reveals the gully erosion were dispersed with areas of Nanka/Oko having the highest concentration of gullies. The generation of gully characteristic map reveals that the gullies vary from area to area in relation to their lithology. The characteristic map (in meters) was classified into three parameters with 2.00-6.06 as Low, 6.06-8.89 as Medium, and 8.89-13.77 as High. The gullies with the highest depths were within the coordinates of N6220.9364, E7458.5948; N6228.6836, E7459.4048; N6311.6208, E74333.6612 with 52.96m, 47.32m and 45.18m respectively. The length of the gullies at the concentrated region stretched as far as 4.37km while the gully with the largest width covered a large space of 397.20m. The result indicate the need for incorporation of gully vulnerability, the areas require dire attention to arrest the menace of the erosion threats.

Opis:
This study aims at assessing and interpreting groundwater quality using statistical techniques in Otuoke and environs, Bayelsa State, Nigeria. Fourteen (14) groundwater samples were collected in the rainy season and analyzed for their physico-chemical and heavy metal contents. Heavy metals were analyzed using Atomic Adsorption Spectrometer. Assessment for drinking purposes revealed that the water is predominantly acidic, with iron and manganese contents exceeding regulatory guidelines in most locations. All other parameters were within WHO and NSDWQ regulatory limits for safe potable water. Water Quality Index revealed that over 73% of the groundwater in the area (11 samples) had good to excellent quality; while the remaining 27% of the groundwater (3 samples) have poor to unsuitable quality for consumption. Assessment of water quality for irrigation purposes was achieved using Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR), Potential Salinity (PS), Permeability Index (PI), Sodium percentage (Na%), Kelly’s ratio (KR), and Magnesium Adsorption Ratio (MAR). On average SAR (4.19), PI (68.51%), MAR (37.45%) and PS (0.77) revealed excellent water quality, whereas Na% (66.46%) revealed doubtful water quality while KR (2.00) revealed unsuitable water quality. Using Piper and Stiff diagrams, hydrochemical facies defined from groundwater in the area includes; Na+K – Cl facies; Na+K - Mg – Cl facies; and Na+K - Ca – Cl facies. Gibb’s diagrams revealed that the dominant control on the hydrochemical facies and overall groundwater quality in the area has been attributed to precipitation and chemical weathering of subsurface rocks. Various ionic ratios including Mg/Ca (0.642), HCO3ˉ/Cl (0.040), (Na+K)/Cl (7.026) and Cation Exchange Values (-6.026) revealed low salt inland origin with respect to provenance. Pearson correlation matrices showed both positive and negative inter-relationships between the physico-chemical and heavy metals in groundwater within the study area. This study has proven the effective use of water quality index as a tool for defining the overall quality of water in Otuoke and its environs, along with hotspots that needs immediate attention. The results could also serve as a decision making tool that will aid in establishment of treatment facilities to improve the quality of water in the study area.
