Opis:
GaAs:C crystal was grown by liquid encapsulated Czochralski technique with large partial pressure of CO in ambient atmosphere p$\text{}_{CO}$/p$\text{}_{tot}$ = 0.2 and investigated using near and infrared absorption, photoluminescence, photoconductivity, photo-induced current transient spectroscopy and photo-Hall measurements. High resistivity of the crystal was found in electrical measurements (10$\text{}^{7}$ Ω cm, the Fermi level at 0.67 eV below conduction band at 300 K). Local vibrational mode revealed increased concentration of carbon acceptor and presence of oxygen related complexes. Photoluminescence spectra were dominated by two bands with peak energies at 1.49 eV and 0.8 eV. The near band gap emission shifts with excitation intensity up to 4 meV/decade. In photocurrent spectrum a strong photoionization band with E = 0.55 eV is observed.

We report results of investigation on the fluorescence induced in sodium vapour by pulses of laser light tuned near the 3S → 4P transition (330 nm). The fluorescence was observed in perpendicular and parallel directions in respect to the laser beam. A depletion of fluorescence intensity corresponding to the 5D → 3P transition (498 nm) was observed along the laser beam. We explain this effect as a result of reabsorption that is caused by intense population of the 3P level due to cascade stimulated processes. The most intense depletion occurs about 20 ns after the laser pulse and it corresponds to the moment of maximal population of the 3P level.

Obtaining solutions neutralizing unpleasant smells from wastewater and technological deposits using rose petals, mint leaves, skins for orange was a main purpose of carried out research work. Also preliminary assessment of the effectiveness of neutralization of unpleasant smells using solutions obtained from given plants, based on experiments on smell in wastewater pretreatment plant in the SUPERFISH Company in Kukinia by Ustronie Morskie, Poland. The method of distillation with steam was applied in this work for the purpose of obtaining essential oils from plant material. Choice of this method is important to analysed plant material. It is applied at getting poorly watersoluble oils and the possible loss of soluble elements does not influence the quality of oil. This method is characterized by uncomplicated apparatus, as well as relatively low costs of carrying the process in comparing to other methods of obtaining oils. Apparatus for production of essential oils obtained from rose petals and mint leaves is presented in fig. 1. Apparatus for production of essential oils obtained from orange skins is presented in fig. 2. In order to determine if substance obtained using method of distillation with steam has aromatic properties, it was essential to create the system of testing and comparing studied substance against established standard. As a starting point standard substance was established, i.e. substance which gave no smell off during examinations. Distilled water was used here as a standard. Next five degree scale of smell intensity was determined contractually (table 1), where lowest degree of the scale "0" means the lack of the smell (standard), 1 is a weak smell, next: average perceptible smell, intense smell and very intense smell. In order to examine effectiveness of action of obtained aromatic solutions it was decided to spray the determined dose of each of them in the pretreatment plant of wastewater from a SUPERFISH fish- plant Examinations consisted in measuring the time of the fragrance duration of sprayed substance by the research team in two zones. It is possible to present the following conclusions on the base of analysis of ex-aminations carried out: As a result of distillation with the steam of substrates from rose, mint and orange, extracts characterized by aromatic properties were obtained. Obtained extracts, depending on the amount of substrate used for distillation, differed in intensity of the fragrance. Biggest concentration of aromatic substances (intense fragrance) in extract, were obtained for biggest amount of substrate used for the process of distillation. Extracts with biggest concentration of dissolved substances are characterized by an intense fragrance. Examinations carried out in the SUPERFISH wastewater pretreatment plant showed the effectiveness of obtained aromatic substances in the neutralization of unpleasant smells. The neutralization duration depends on the amount of substrate used for obtaining aromatic extract. The increase of extract concentration is lengthening duration of effective dezodorization. Research carried out in the wastewater pretreatment plant of SUPERFISH company showed good effectiveness of used fragrance substances in neutralization of unpleasant smells.

Opis:
Measurements of the so-called lost alpha particles escaping from thermonuclear plasma in future tokamaks (such as ITER) for energy production would be essential for monitoring the energy balance in these devices. The detection would have to be carried out in a harsh environment (with high nuclear radiation fluxes, high temperature, etc.), which limits the use of common semiconductors for charged particle detection. Diamond seems to be an attractive material for alpha particle detectors in these conditions. In this paper an analysis of properties of a diamond detector for spectrometric alpha measurements is reported. A high purity CVD (chemical vapour deposition) single crystal diamond detector was used, fabricated for this dedicated application by the Diamond Detector Ltd. The energy calibration was carried out using a triple alpha particle isotope source, AMR33 (239Pu, 241Am, 244Cm). A very good energy resolution, ca. 20 keV at ca. 5.5 MeV had been obtained, which is comparable to that of the silicon detector. The linearity of the diamond detector amplitude response to the alpha particle energy was analyzed with the use of mono-energetic (0.4–2 MeV) ion beam from a Van de Graaff accelerator. Results of the measurements using the AMR33 source deviate at most 30 keV from the calibration line obtained in this way.

Opis:
This article is the first of two papers on the remote sensing methods of monitoring the Baltic ecosystem, developed by a Polish team. The main aim of the five- year SatBałtyk (2010–2014) research project (Satellite Monitoring of the Baltic Sea Environment) is to prepare the technical infrastructure and set in motion operational procedures for the satellite monitoring of the Baltic environment. This system is to characterize on a routine basis the structural and functional properties of this sea on the basis of data supplied by the relevant satellites. The characterization and large-scale dissemination of the following properties of the Baltic is anticipated: the solar radiation influx to the sea’s waters in various spectral intervals, energy balances of the short- and long-wave radiation at the Baltic Sea surface and in the upper layers of the atmosphere over the Baltic, sea surface temperature distribution, dynamic states of the water surface, concentrations of chlorophyll a and other phytoplankton pigments in the Baltic water, distributions of algal blooms, the occurrence of upwelling events, and the characteristics of primary organic matter production and photosynthetically released oxygen in the water. It is also intended to develop and, where feasible, to implement satellite techniques for detecting slicks of petroleum derivatives and other compounds, evaluating the state of the sea’s ice cover, and forecasting the hazards from current and future storms and providing evidence of their effects in the Baltic coastal zone. The ultimate objective of the project is to implement an operational system for the routine determination and dissemination on the Internet of the above-mentioned features of the Baltic in the form of distribution maps as well as plots, tables and descriptions characterizing the state of the various elements of the Baltic environment. The main sources of input data for this system will be the results of systematic recording by environmental satellites and also special-purpose ones such as TIROS N/NOAA, MSG (currently Meteosat 9), EOS/AQUA and ENVISAT. The final effects of the SatBałtyk project are to be achieved by the end of 2014, i.e. during a period of 60 months. These two papers present the results obtained during the first 15 months of the project. Part 1 of this series of articles contains the assumptions, objectives and a description of the most important stages in the history of our research, which constitute the foundation of the current project. It also discusses the way in which SatBałtyk functions and the scheme of its overall operations system. The second article (Part 2), will discuss some aspects of its practical applicability in the satellite monitoring of the Baltic ecosystem (see Woźniak et al. (2011) in this issue).

Opis:
This paper is the second part of the description of the first stage of the SatBałtyk project’s implementation. Part 1 (Woźniak et al. 2011, in this issue) presents the assumptions and objectives of SatBałtyk and describes the most important stages in the history of our research, which is the foundation of this project. It also discusses the operation and general structure of the SatBałtyk system. Part 2 addresses various aspects of the practical applicability of the SatBałtyk Operational System to Baltic ecosystem monitoring. Examples are given of the Baltic’s characteristics estimated using the preliminary versions of the algorithms in this Operational System. At the current stage of research, these algorithms apply mainly to the characteristics of the solar energy influx and the distribution of this energy among the various processes taking place in the atmosphere-sea system, and also to the radiation balance of the sea surface, the irradiance conditions for photosynthesis and the condition of plant communities in the water, sea surface temperature distributions and some other marine phenomena correlated with this temperature. Monitoring results obtained with these preliminary algorithms are exemplified in the form of distribution maps of selected abiotic parameters of the Baltic, as well as structural and functional characteristics of this ecosystem governed by these parameters in the Baltic’s many basins. The maps cover practically the whole area of the Baltic Sea. Also given are results of preliminary inspections of the accuracy of the magnitudes shown on the maps. In actual fact, the errors of these estimates are relatively small. The further practical application of this set of algorithms (to be gradually made more specific) is therefore entirely justified as the basis of the SatBałtyk system for the effective operational monitoring of the state and functioning of Baltic ecosystems. This article also outlines the plans for extending SatBałtyk to include the recording of the effects and hazards caused by current and expected storm events in the Polish coastal zone.

W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań próbek skał węglanowych pobranych z utworów triasowych w rejonie północnej części Chorzowa. Przedmiotem badań była identyfikacja faz mineralnych, obecnych w tych skałach, szczególnie faz węglanowych. W północnej części Chorzowa występują utwory triasowe reprezentowane przez skały stropowej części profilu pstrego piaskowca oraz spągowej części profilu utworów wapienia muszlowego - warstw gogolińskich. Utwory te eksploatowane były w XIX i pierwszej połowie XX wieku. Kalcyt pierwszej generacji tworzy ziarna mikrytowe, natomiast kalcyt drugiej generacji występuje w postaci ziaren sparytowych, zróżnicowanych pod względem wielkości i kształtu.
This article presents the results of research on carbonate rock samples taken from Triassic sediments of the northern area of Chorzów City. The aim of the research was to identify the mineral phases of these rocks, especially carbonate phases. The rocks from the roof part of the Bundsandstein profile and floor part of the Muschelkalk profile - Gogolin Beds - are typical sediments from the northern part of Chorzów City. These rocks were mined in the XIX century and the beginning of the XX century. The article also presents the results of research on samples of carbonate rocks taken from investigated strata. It provides a Petrographic description, the results of microscopic analysis executed in polarized, transmitted light, X-ray analysis, and microprobe measurements using a scanning microscope. The results of these analyses showed that dolomites dominate in the Bunsandstein strata. Dolomites (The sampled rocks?) are composed mainly of dolomite, but sparry calcite was also identified. Moreover, quartz, clay minerals, muscovite and iron minerals were observed in the Bundsandstein rocks. The Muschelkalk sedimentsare mainly represented by limestone. In some areas, conglomerates were also found. The conglomerates are composed of carbonate rock boulders connected by carbonate cement. Two generations of calcite were observed while investigating the limestone. The first generation calcite is micritic, and the second generation calcite forms sparry crystals different in size and shape. In some areas of the sparry calcite it is possible to observe perfect rhobohedral cleavage. Moreover, dolomite, rhodohrosite, and noncarbonate minerals like quartz, muscovite, and clay minerals were identified. The results of microscopic analysis also showed that the limestone is different in texture. The limestone presents the following textures: biomorphic, detrical, sparry, microsparry and micritic.

The paper presents a new approach to reliability and functional analysis of sophisticated complex systems using fuzzy logic. We propose to use such methodology since dependability parameters of the system are mostly approximated by experts instead of classical sources of data. Presented approach show different idea – modeling system using the unified structure – in functional sense. We assess the reliability of the system by accumulated down time. Fuzzy logic based reliability analysis, as well as Computer Information System and Discrete Transport System modeling and simulation are presented. Moreover, results of numerical experiment performed on a test case scenario related to the economic and functional aspects using proposed methodology are given. Fuzzy approach allows reducing the problem of assumptions of reliability distributions and – this way – seems to be very interesting for real systems management and tuning.

Opis:
Heracleum Sosnowskyi was discovered in 1772 and described as a separate species in 1944 by I. P. Mandenova. Its name is derived from the surname of a botanist studying Caucasian flora, Prof. D.I. Sosnowski. In the area of the Caucasus foothills, the plant reaches approximately 1-1,5 m in height, whereas in Poland its size is significantly larger, up to 3-3.5 m. Heracleum blooms from mid-June to the end of July. The flowers are arranged in umbels and last for 2-3 weeks. In Central Europe, the species colonizes mostly neglected green areas, ruins and riversides. Heracleum poses a serious threat to the human population due to its photoallergic properties, resulting from the presence of intensely toxic furanocoumarin in its sap. Furanocoumarins are found in small hairs that cover the leaves and stem, and are the components of the essential oil. They may penetrate the skin through the epithelial layer, posing a direct threat to human health. Contact with the plant, followed by sun exposure, may lead to the development of large blisters and symptoms of burns. Heracleum, in the event of consumption, is also harmful to farm animals, causing, among others, internal bleeding and diarrhea. Although the toxic properties of Heracleum have been known for many years, every summer people who had contact with the plant present at physicians of different medical specialties.
