Opis:
Texture is one of the most significant physical properties of soils. Over the years, several methods of its measuring were developed. The paper presents a method for determining the particle size composition of soils, based on the separation of particles in the sedimentation process. Density of suspension is determined on the basis of apparent weight changes of a float submerged in it. The weight of the float suspended ona thin line, at a given depth in the suspension, is measured with a sensitive piezoelectric dynamometer. The Stokes equation is used to calculate the content of soil fractions with equivalent diameters in the range of 0.001 to 0.1 mm. Digital transmission of results from the dynamometer, the temperature sensor and measurements of the distance defining the depth of immersion of the float to the computer enable calculations of particle size composition to be performed automatically. This paper presents the results of measurements of the particle size composition of artificially generated mixtures of ‘silt’ and ‘clay’. The results are compared with results obtained with other methods (including the laser method). A high level of repeatability of the results and satisfactory compatibility in relation to the reference pipette method are noted.

Opis:
For the good established landscape planning landscape protection and landscape management actions have to take into consideration the actual conditions of the landscape elements. Earlier we dealt with the stability of the landscapes (Kerényi, Csorba, 1996), recently started to investigate the most important factors, which are endangers the proper functioning of the landscapes. Results are calculated for 229 microregions of the country, which are elements of the official landscape hierarchy of Hungary described in the Cadastral of Microregions of Hungary. The average size of the microregions are 100-500 km2. There are certain factors among which some have already elaborated, and others are being worked on yet. Degree of ecological fragmentation of the microregions by roads, railway lines and settlements was determined during the last year. In the case of large settlements the extent of inner parts, traffic intensities of the roads was taken into account, while in the case of railroads it was taken into consideration whether railway lines are single or double tracked. Results were purified using a weighting, where the location of the protected natural areas compared to the situation of the given settlement, roads or railroads was taken into consideration. In the calculations it was taken into account as well that the agglomeration processes of the large settlements may restrict the ecological gates and corridors of the migration of plant and animal species. From the series of maps on natural threats on microregional level, the map of the hazards of drought is presented first. The map gives a definite answer to the question, in which microregions is profitable to establish irrigation systems; and how high is the uncertainty of the rate of their utilization. Global warming, however, may modulate the map resented here remarkably in the next decades. Microregions that have been classified into transition categories with moderate or medium level of drought hazard may fall into categories of serious hazard of drought in the future. A synthesizing map has been completed by summing the seven datasets of the indicator group of natural hazards and the weighting of the subsets. Landscape planning is strongly affected by tendencies of macro economy on the present land use structure. EU agricultural policies have just started to affect strongly on Hungarian land use structure, therefore attempts have been made in order to forecast their impacts. Present Hungarian land use structure has been compared to priorities of the EU. Prospective shifts in land use structure have been determined for the 35 regions of Hungary. According to the 8-10 factors mentioned above, we shall have a detailed database to evaluate the microregions of Hungary in order to characterize the most threatened landscapes, and the most dangerous impacts on the landscape functioning.

Opis:
Upper Miocene sandstones in the Sava Depression (Northern Croatia) are potential targets for carbon dioxide (CO2)-based enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes or mineral carbonation with reservoir brine. In general, sandstone lithology, even rich with aluminosilicate minerals, is not the most favourable rock medium for efficient sequestration of CO2 in minerals. However, CO2 is naturally sequestered in minerals when CO2 is injected into sandstone reservoirs and subdued to carbonation. The timescale of such sequestration is on the order of 104–105 years. Upper Miocene sandstones in the Sava Depression could incorporate up to 25% of aluminosilicate minerals (10% K-feldspars) and up to 20% dolomites and often laterally transition between pelitic and psammitic lithofacies, rich in clay minerals (15% micas). Total volumes are approximately 107 and 62 million m3 (approximately 268 and 155 million t of rocks), respectively for the potential injection reservoirs in the Ivanić Field. Oil saturation in the injection intervals is estimated to be approximately 14.8 and 4.1 million m3 respectively. Geochemical analogies and mineralogy can be used to support predictions for the low percentages of injected CO2 that may be stored during carbonation and form secondary minerals

Opis:
The source of the clastic sediments in the Croatian part of the Pannonian Basin System (CPBS) during the Late Pannonian and Early Pontian was the Eastern Alps. Clastic sediments were redeposited several times before they reached the Sava Depression. The depositional environment and sediment transport mechanisms have been subject to detailed analysis described in many publications, and this study builds on previous research. We have carried out geostatistical mapping of selected Upper Pannonian and Lower Pontian reservoir variables of the Kloštar Field, located to the west of the Moslavačka gora Mt. (Croatia). This has shown that the Moslavačka gora Mt. was a secondary, local source of sediment, in contrast to the previous interpretation of a single, distant clastic source (Eastern Alps) for the CPBS during the Late Miocene. As the mineralogical composition of the Moslavačka gora Mt. and the Eastern Alps is very similar, the dominant direction of turbidity currents obtained by sequential indicator simulations are used to suggest that a modest amount of detritus was eroded from the Moslavačka gora Mt. and mixed with detritus sourced from the Eastern Alps.

Opis:
Objectives. The primary objective of the study was to test toothbrushes with different types of filaments (conical vs. rounded) with respect to cause gingival abrasion after surgical intervention of wisdom teeth. A secondary objective was to evaluate the efficacy of plaque removal and the improvement of gingival conditions to alleviate wound healing and to avoid gingivitis. Methods. One hundred and seventy-three healthy subjects with surgical intervention of wisdom teeth participated in a randomized, single blind study and were randomly allocated to control group (standard ADA reference toothbrush) or test group (meridol® special toothbrush with conical filaments). Clinical examinations included gingival abrasion, plaque index and gingival index, and were conducted at baseline, 7 and 28 days. Results. For the gingival abrasion the mean number of lesions of all sizes was after 28 days significantly lower in the test group (p-value <0.001) compared to control group. Plaque index was not significantly different between the two groups in the last visit. At day 28 the gingival index was significantly lower in the test group (p=0.031) compared to control group. Conclusions. The toothbrush with conical filaments induced significantly less gingival abrasions than the standard ADA toothbrush and showed superior results in improving gingival health (gingival index). Both toothbrushes were comparable effective with respect to plaque removal. Clinical Relevance. Scientific rationale for study: Supra and sub-gingival biofilm leads to gingival inflammation. Post-surgical removal of the biofilm from gingival surfaces promotes healing after wisdom tooth extraction. Tooth brushing leads to gingival abrasion. Earlier investigations with toothbrushes having conical filaments suggest less gingival tissue damage. Principal findings: The results showed that the toothbrush with conical filaments caused significantly less gingival abrasions than the toothbrush with rounded filaments. Practical implications: Toothbrush filament design should be considered when choosing toothbrush for oral hygiene after oral surgery.

Opis:
Co-based alloys represent very important group of materials used for medical applications. Currently, fabrication of these materials is preferentially done by casting or forming. Production by powder metallurgy techniques is less common. However, powder metallurgy fabrication of these alloys brings advantages such as reduced machining, possibility of alloying by high-melting elements, preparation of nanocrystalline materials with enhanced mechanical properties or producing of porous alloys with improved ability to integrate into issues. In this work, our attention was focused on fundamental preparation of an CoCrMo alloy by two methods of powder metallurgy. In the first method, pure metallic powders were mixed, pressed and sintered in vacuum furnace. The second applied technology consisted of mechanical alloying using planetary ball mill and compaction by spark plasma sintering technique. A series of samples was prepared under various conditions by these procedures. Dependence of microstructure, phase composition and mechanical properties of prepared samples on fabrication conditions (milling parameters, sintering temperature etc.) was studied. Obtained results were compared with properties of commercial cast cobalt alloy used for medical applications.

Opis:
Self-propagating high-temperature synthesis is a simple and efficient method for the synthesis of various compounds including ceramics and intermetallics. In this process, the compressed mixture of elemental or master alloy powders is ignited or heated to initiate the exothermic reactions leading to the formation of desired compounds. In order to control the process efficiently, the effect of several important parameters has to be determined in each applied alloy system. Previous results showed that those parameters are: initiation temperature, process duration, pressure used for compression and heating rate. This paper is devoted to the description and explanation of the effect of the heating rate on the formation of intermetallics during self-propagating high-temperature synthesis in Fe-Al and Ni-Ti systems. Differential thermal analysis of compressed powder mixtures under various heating conditions and microstructure observation of samples prepared by various heating rates using electric resistance heating and spark plasma sintering were carried out. The effect of heating rates on the formations of intermetallics in studied systems is discussed in this paper.
