Five different strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were tested for their abilities to accumulate uranium from waste water containing competitive ions. Samples of water passing out from a previous uranium mill were used. The strains tested possess different abilities to accumulate uranium. The kinetics of bioaccumulation, the leaching degree, the influence of cell density and their origin were investigated. Under the applied experimental conditions, more than a half of the total activity (uranium and the decay products) could be accumulated after 60 min contact time of 1 mL S. cerevisiae suspension and 5 mL of water. The other cations present in solution effectively competed for the uranium accumulation. 226Ra and its decay products were completely retained using all tested strains.

Nanocrystalline (Fe₃Ni₁)₈₁Nb₇B₁₂ alloy was irradiated by electron beams of doses up to 4 MGy. Irradiation had an influence on the magnetic microstructure of the studied alloys. It has manifested as a change in the mean orientation of local magnetization, intensity of the internal magnetic field, and distribution function of induction of internal magnetic field. All these parameters were determined from the measured Mössbauer spectra. The mean orientation of local magnetization was the most sensitive parameter. Structural changes were not identified by the Mössbauer spectroscopy and by X-ray diffraction. The results indicated that the changes of the microscopic magnetic parameters induced by irradiation depend on the phase composition. Intensity of internal magnetic field also contributes to resistivity of alloy against radiation.

Although the analogies between the electron energy loss spectra and X-ray absorption spectra were recognized long ago, the possibility to observe the magnetic circular dichroism in the electron microscope was demonstrated only recently. This technique combines the atom specificity with the high spatial resolution of the transmission electron microscope. Being a very young technique, there are still many open questions concerning the optimization of the signal to noise ratio. In this paper we study the dichroic signal dependence on the sample thickness, acceleration voltage and incoming beam tilt angle of bcc-Fe and fcc-Ni.

The source of the clastic sediments in the Croatian part of the Pannonian Basin System (CPBS) during the Late Pannonian and Early Pontian was the Eastern Alps. Clastic sediments were redeposited several times before they reached the Sava Depression. The depositional environment and sediment transport mechanisms have been subject to detailed analysis described in many publications, and this study builds on previous research. We have carried out geostatistical mapping of selected Upper Pannonian and Lower Pontian reservoir variables of the Kloštar Field, located to the west of the Moslavačka gora Mt. (Croatia). This has shown that the Moslavačka gora Mt. was a secondary, local source of sediment, in contrast to the previous interpretation of a single, distant clastic source (Eastern Alps) for the CPBS during the Late Miocene. As the mineralogical composition of the Moslavačka gora Mt. and the Eastern Alps is very similar, the dominant direction of turbidity currents obtained by sequential indicator simulations are used to suggest that a modest amount of detritus was eroded from the Moslavačka gora Mt. and mixed with detritus sourced from the Eastern Alps.

Opis:
Self-propagating high-temperature synthesis is a simple and efficient method for the synthesis of various compounds including ceramics and intermetallics. In this process, the compressed mixture of elemental or master alloy powders is ignited or heated to initiate the exothermic reactions leading to the formation of desired compounds. In order to control the process efficiently, the effect of several important parameters has to be determined in each applied alloy system. Previous results showed that those parameters are: initiation temperature, process duration, pressure used for compression and heating rate. This paper is devoted to the description and explanation of the effect of the heating rate on the formation of intermetallics during self-propagating high-temperature synthesis in Fe-Al and Ni-Ti systems. Differential thermal analysis of compressed powder mixtures under various heating conditions and microstructure observation of samples prepared by various heating rates using electric resistance heating and spark plasma sintering were carried out. The effect of heating rates on the formations of intermetallics in studied systems is discussed in this paper.

Gravity-dedicated satellite missions CHAMP and GRACE provide accurate data that can be inverted into geopotential coefficients forming global geopotential models (GGM). Through an estimation process, mean square errors of these coefficients can be elvaluated. In most cases, even the entire variance-covariance matrices are computed. However, these errors are only formaI and do not represent weIl the actual accuracy of estimated coefficients, thus also of various gravity field parameters synthesized from these coefficients. For this reason validation procedures for the new GGMs are being sought since the classical validation methocts reached their limits. This article discusses the validation procedure of the GGM through its comparison with idependent data estimated at selected GPS/leveIling stations over the area of Central Europe. Due to a different spectral content of height anomalies synthesized from the GGM and of those derived from combination of ellipsoidal and normal heights at selected points of the European Vertical Reference Network, the GGM-based low-frequency height anomaly is completed for a missing higth-frequency component based on high resolution and high accuracy ground gravity and elevation data. The methodology is also applied on a set of GPS/leveIling stations in the Czech Republic. In accordance with previous validation tests of GGMs based on data of crossover altimetry, obtained results indicate that the current GGMs estimated from single/dual-sateIlite data seem to have significant problems namely with low-order and degree coefficients.

The place of generation of technologic heat is important applied criteria for classification of electric heating. According to that, the direct heating is if the heat is generated directly in the heated material, or the indirect heating if material is heated indirectly by the heat generated in conversion element. Possibilities of practical application of both methods are typical for resistant heating. Considering indirect heating, the charge is out of influence of electromagnetic field, this directly does not influence its temperature field. Temperature distribution in the charge volume depends only on its heat-physical properties and conditions of heat exchange on surface, i.e. thermo kinetic processes. Fourier's equation is applied in field solution. Considering direct heating, temperature distribution in the charge volume is more complicated. It is conditioned by interaction of temperature and electromagnetic field which is generated by the current flowing in the charge. Solution of temperature field in directly heated charge must for that reason respect current density distribution on its cross-section, this leads to applying of heat conduction equation. We introduce its application for different types of temperature fields in the solid charge in this article. We present solution by two methods, results are presented in criteria (no dimensional) form.

Grinding is still an important method for surface finishing. At FPTM JEPU research, which deals with this issue is conducted. Experiments are carried out with grinding various materials under different conditions and then selected components of the surface integrity are evaluated. They include roughness Ra, Rm and Rz, Material ratio curve (Abbott Firestone curve) and also the obtained roundness. This article deals with grinding nickel Inconel 718 alloy, when selected cutting grinding conditions were used and subsequently the surface profile and the material ratio curve were measured and evaluated.

The effect of pulse annealing on magnetization processes in FINEMET-type alloy in weak magnetic fields (the Rayleigh area) is studied in this paper. Rapidly quenched FINEMET ribbon in the original amorphous state was chosen for the study. The significant differences in behavior of studied materials are ascribed to the differences in internal mechanical stresses, which bring about the changes in total magnetic anisotropy and consequently also changes in domain walls thickness.

The magnetization processes in region of small excitation magnetic fields - Rayleigh region, were investigated on the amorphous and nanocrystalline FINEMET ribbons. The significant differences in behaviour of these materials were found. This could be explained by the difference in the value of magnetoelastic anisotropy as well as by the different thickness of the domain walls in these materials.
