The article discusses representations of artificial intelligence (AI) in popular culture, mainly in the movies. The author focuses on AI turning against a man, seeking his extermination or enslavement. The paper investigates cinematic concepts of the birth of AI in the context of technological singularity. In these works which present maturing of AI we may observe that often its motives and aims which we assess as sinister are, in fact, the reaction to human actions. Emotional nature of AI and its irritating interactions with less intelligent and reasonable people has been revealed. The author discusses sources of genocidal plans, and separately examines tensions caused by AI representations in androids. In the light of the analysis, AI is a screen on which phantasms related to the tensions in the global risk society are projected. The anxiety of AI rebellion is an emanation of our loss and fear in technicized world. The popular culture conceals a worrisome fact that we are responsible for potential disaster.

W artykule przedstawiono działanie logiki kolektywistycznej na trzech obszarach: (1) w historycznej komparatystyce ludobójstw – podstawowej metodzie genocide studies;(2) w działaniach organizacji ofiar i ocalonych oraz obrońców praw zwierząt; (3) w dyskursach nacjonalistycznych i polityce pamięci. Logika kolektywistyczna to zbiór operacji, które podmiotem historii czynią zbiorowości ludzkie, postrzegane jako połączone ważnymi więziami społecznymi i interesami oraz odróżniające się kulturowo. W jej wyniku myślimy o zbiorowej winie i zasłudze. W artykule przedstawiono zalety i wady komparatystyki historycznej jako metody naukowej genocide studies. Następnie przeanalizowano wykorzystanie kapitału symbolicznego związanego z terminem „ludobójstwo” w porównywaniu innych zbrodni oraz gospodarczego wykorzystania zwierząt z ludobójstwami. Na koniec opisano związek państwowej polityki pamięci i dyskursów nacjonalistycznych z działalnością akademicką badaczy ludobójstw.
The article aims to present the mechanisms of collectivist logic as it functions in three areas: (1) in the historical comparative analysis of genocides – the basic method of genocidestudies; (2) in the activities of the organizations of victims and survivors, as well as in actions undertaken by animal rights activists; (3) in nationalist discourses and in the politics of memory. Collectivist logic is a set of operations that address human communities – groups of individuals linked together by significant social bonds and interests, and perceived as culturally distinctive – as the subject of history. As a result of the application of such logic, we may think about collective guilt and collective merit. The article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of historical comparative analysis as an essential methodological tool of genocide studies. The argument further focuses upon the use of the symbolic capital attributed to the term “genocide” in studies involving analyses comparing other crimes – as well as the industrial exploitation of animals – to genocides. Finally, the author describes the relationship between the state policy of memory, nationalist discourses, and the academic integrity of genocide scholars.

The essay answers the question of whether ecocide occurred in the region of Upper Silesia. The paper includes a brief discussion on the concept of ecocide. The paper presents two cases of ecocide – one in West Papua and the other in Darfur. The prognosis of climate genocide in the future is also presented. The text argues that there was no intentional ecocide of Silesians in Upper Silesia, although ecological discrimination against them was observed.

Artykuł mieści się w paradygmacie socjologii historycznej i genocide studies. Omówiono w nim pięć nieformalnych instytucji gwałtu, wyróżnionych na podstawie komparatystyki historycznej dziesięciu przypadków: (1) gwałt jako nagroda dla żołnierzy i innych bojowników; (2) gwałt jako mechanizm inicjacji żołnierzy, integracji grupy zbrojnej oraz dowodzenia męskości przez walczących; (3) gwałt jako instytucja ofensywna, mająca dwie główne funkcje: (3.1) symbolicznego ataku na grupę obcą oraz (3.2) zwiększenia kosztów grupy obcej (leczenia kobiet, wychowania niechcianych dzieci itd.); (4) gwałt jako mechanizm czystki etnicznej; (5) gwałt jako mechanizm ludobójstwa. Wymienione typy dotyczą instytucji, a zatem kulturowo ustanowionych wartości i norm, które określają akceptowane cele i sposoby ich osiągania, osadzone w subkulturze określonych organizacji (armii, policji, bojówek partyjnych itd.). Nie każdy gwałt zależy od wymienionych instytucji. W tym sensie gwałty mogą być postrzegane przez członków danej organizacji jako uprawnione lub nieuprawnione. Sprawcy mogą też odczuwać instytucjonalny przymus, aby zaangażować się w gwałcenie ofiar.
This article discusses five non-formal institutions of rape from the perspectives of historical sociology and genocide studies, distinguishing types of rape on the basis of a comparative historical analysis of ten cases: (1) rape as reward for soldiers and other combatants; (2) rape as a method of initiating soldiers, integrating the military group, and legitimating masculinity; (3) rape as an offensive institution, fulfilling two functions: (3.1) symbolic attack on an enemy group; (3.2) increasing damage/cost to the enemy by making their lives harder in terms of trauma to women, the raising of unwanted children, and so on; (4) rape as a method of ethnic cleansing; (5) rape as a form of genocide. The five types of rape are regarded as institutions: expressions of culturally fixed values and norms which determine accepted goals and the methods of attaining those goals and are embedded in the subcultures of particular organizations (the army, the police, party militia groups, etc.). Not every rape is related to these institutions. In this sense, rapes can be regarded by members of a particular organization as justified or unjustified. Moreover, perpetrators may feel institutionally compelled to engage in the raping of victims.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie wniosków z analizy tekstów na transparentach (i innych nośnikach) niesionych w czasie protestów, które wybuchły po wyroku Trybunału Konstytucyjnego w sprawie dopuszczalności aborcji. W badaniach wykorzystano techniki i metody multimodalnej analizy dyskursu, wyrastającej z semiotyki społecznej oraz wirtualnej etnografii. Autor skupił się na strategiach dyskursywnych, które stosowali protestujący. W tekście przeanalizowany został własny kod demonstrantów. Wykazano, że przekazy te są silnie intertekstualne i innowacyjne, spełniały także funkcję ludyczną i fatyczną. W artykule omówiono także funkcję wulgaryzmów, których stosowanie jest według autora celową strategią. Charakter przekazów politycznych sprawiał jednak, że pewna grupa odbiorców była wykluczona z tej komunikacji politycznej, nie mogąc zrozumieć makrosądu transparentu.
This paper presents an analysis of the banners and placards used by protesters following the ruling of the Constitutional Tribunal on the legality of abortion. Multimodal discourse analysis methods, derived from social semiotics and virtual ethnography, were used in the research process. The author focuses on the discursive strategies employed by the protesters. The paper analyses the protesters’ internal code. It was found that the messages used were strongly intertextual and innovative while being both ludic and phatic. The paper also discusses the use of profanity which, the author claims, was part of a deliberate strategy. The style of the political messages, however, contributed to a part of the audience being alienated due to their inability to comprehend the macro propositions of the messages.

The author compares 12 concentration camp systems, from US camps in the Philippines (1901–1902) to Serbian, Croatian, and Bosnian camps in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1992–1995). He uses comparative history for macro-causal analysis, discusses the challenges in defining concentration camps, and compares camps with other institutions. Some of the features outlined in the paper can be found in all concentration camps (forceful isolation of masses of people in accord with a “collectivist logic”, power, and cruelty), while others are limited to certain sub-types (forced labor, medical experiments). The author proves that concentration camps were predominantly a tool that was intended to help win wars, reinforce and stabilize power, and create a new, obedient form of citizen. Therefore, camps were one of the many methods used to pacify hostile populations and internal opposition. At the same time, their potential became apparent and led to the rise and spread of absolute power structures.

The article is devoted to biopolitics and forms of biopower in the post-apocalyptic worlds created in the texts of popular culture. The author’s theses are based on the analysis of 147 novels and short stories, as well as 246 films and series. The study describes the types of threats to the communities of survivors, strategies for dealing with them and their impact on the post-apocalyptic form of socialization. Although the analysis is not limited to the nuclear apocalypse, it pays special attention to radioactivity as a “magic factor” used in popular works. The author answers the question about what these thought experiments tell us about collective consciousness and “subconscious” of the late modern risk societies.

The article analyzes selected literary representations of partial genocide in the Congo Free State (1880–1908) as documents of the discourse of truth (in the sense of M. Foucault) in a given era. Considerations use achievements of the postcolonial studies as well as genocide studies. The analysis focuses on the comparison of two books – Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad and The Dream of the Celt by Mario Vargas Llosa. The author reconstructs the way indigenous people are presented in both novels, showing elements of the racist discourse in Conrad’s novel and the changes that Llosa introduced. He describes the character of Kurtz (a colonist and an order represented by him) as “empty signifiers” of the colonial system. The article analyzes the extent to which both authors adequately presented the functioning of the colonial system. It indicates the dimensions of Casement’s exclusion – the main character of Llosa’s novel – referring also to the analysis of gender studies. The author concludes that both works reveal the weakness of criticism undertaken from the particular position – Llosa and Conrad were high rank men in the hierarchy of the global capitalist society. Regardless of the intent, they reproduce the discourse of truth, establishing not only the subject of cognition, but also their own identity.

Aside from it being a crime, genocide is a very important subject of social sciences. The aim of the paper is to prove the thesis, that ideological discourses (not: ideologies) are an important part of genocidal mobilization. Ideological discourse establishes not only cultural myths (the codes of popular culture) that define what is normal in social life, but also institutions, habituses, social roles, etc. Therefore discourse plays direct and indirect role in mobilization. This article is based on critical discourse analysis theory, historical sociology paradigm and genocide studies. Legal definition of genocide does not easily lend itself to empirical and historical research. Therefore the author proposes the new definition of genocide and the list of genocides. There are seven main ideological discourses, which spurred genocidal mobilization in the XX century: (1) nationalist discourse, (2) Realpolitik discourse, (3) racist discourse, (4) medical/epidemiological discourse, (5) fundamentalist religious discourse, (6) conspiracy discourse and (7) discourse of usefulness and parasitism. These discourses are constructed as social texts and immediately translated into social constructs. The paper explores these discourses, that were crucial for the formation of modern genocides.
Ludobójstwo, oprócz tego, że jest zbrodnią, stanowi bardzo ważny przedmiot nauk społecznych. Celem artykułu jest dowiedzenie tezy, że dyskursy ideologiczne (nie ideologie) są ważną częścią mobilizacji ludobójczej. Dyskurs ideologiczny ustanawia nie tylko kulturowe mity (kody kultury popularnej), które określają, co jest normalne w życiu społecznym, ale również instytucje, habitusy, role społeczne itd. Dlatego dyskurs odgrywa zarówno bezpośrednią, jak i pośrednią rolę w mobilizacji. Artykuł ten oparty jest na krytycznej szkole analizy dyskursu, paradygmacie socjologii historycznej oraz studiach nad ludobójstwem. Prawna definicja ludobójstwa nie daje się łatwo wykorzystać w empirycznych i historycznych badaniach ludobójstwa. Dlatego autor zaproponował nową definicję ludobójstwa i listę ludobójstw. Wyróżniono siedem dyskursów ideologicznych, które wpływały na ludobójczą mobilizację w XX wieku: (1) dyskurs nacjonalistyczny, (2) Realpolitik, (3) rasistowski, (4) medyczno-epidemiologiczny, (5) fundamentalistyczno-religijny, (6) spiskowy oraz (7) użyteczności i pasożytnictwa. Dyskursy te są konstruowane jako społeczne teksty i natychmiastowo przekładane na społeczne konstrukty. Artykuł bada wymienione dyskursy, które były kluczowe dla ukształtowania się nowoczesnych ludobójstw.
