Opis:
This article presents results of the experimental measurements of the cavitation phenomena in a Venturi tube with water as the working medium. Three variants of such tube were tested. Angles of converging and diverging sections are equal to 45o and 45o, 30o and 60o, 45o and 60o, respectively. In every case the throat diameter is equal to 3 mm and the throat length to 6 mm. The average flow velocity ranges from 0.1 to 0.5 m/s. During measurements, the average flow velocity, upstream and downstream pressure and water temperature were recorded. Additionally, by the use of a high-speed camera and a simple digital camera, information about the size and the shape of the bubble clouds for different flow conditions was collected. The aim of the article is data acquisition for the further numerical analyses. The experimental runs executed for this paper are to help provide more information about this type of flow, since numerical modeling of the cavitation phenomena in Venturi tubes is still very difficult and in many cases even quantitative agreement is impossible to obtain.

Opis:
The content of this article is a direct continuation of the prior experimental works on the topic of cloud cavitation in Venturis. The results of the experimental tests were used to create a set of characteristics for three types of Venturis. The article has two aims: 1) verification of the similarity between the characteristics obtained and reported in the literature, 2) verification of the range of the obtained characteristics with respect to parallel diagrams. Both aims were achieved, which confirms that the quality of the prior results of the experimental measurements is at least sufficient to realize the main objective of the whole project: creation of numerical models of cavitating flow in Venturis. The literature overview showed that the issue has been not solved until today, even at the qualitative level. This reason was the motivation for the undertaken research, including contents of the article.

Opis:
In the article, validation of results of numerical simulations of cavitating flow in a convergent-divergent nozzle is presented. In validation, a new optoelectronic system is used in order to extract the changes in the bubbles volume fraction of the mixture in freely specified cross-sections. Three homogeneous models (Schnerr and Sauer, Singhal et al. and Zwart et al.) are analysed. The assessment of usefulness of the new system in experimental measurements of cavitation is the main aim of the article. Looking for new opportunities to replace image analysis, which is a traditional validation method in numerical simulations of cavitating flows, is motivation for the research. The results obtained with the use of the system show a good agreement with the simulation’s results for the two chosen cross-sections. The described optoelectronic system gives promising results and can be regarded as an alternative to traditional validation methods in the cavitation research area.

Opis:
Cavitation is one of the most interesting phenomena in area of fluid flow research. It can be observed in many different hydraulic systems and its effects can be very serious. Basic problem with cavitation is its observation. The main aim of the paper is to propose and evaluate the simple method allowing registration of the cavitation cloud shape, which will be financially and computationally undemanding. Therefore, the article presents the system registering the shape of cavitation cloud. It is based on the optoelectronic devices, i.e. lasers and photoresistors, as well as on the assumption that cavitation leads to diffusion of lasers light on the vapor bubbles. The experiment was performed for three cavitation inducers and two flow velocities. Obtained results shows that the shape of cavitation cloud is dependent on the inducer, but not on flow velocity. It can be concluded that the described optoelectronic system can be regarded as an inexpensive alternative to traditional methods of cavitation observation.

Opis:
The focus of research works on cavitation has changed since the 1960s; the behaviour of a single bubble is no more the area of interest for most scientists. Its place was taken by the cavitating flow considered as a whole. Many numerical models of cavitating flows came into being within the space of the last fifty years. They can be divided into two groups: multifluid and homogeneous (i.e., single-fluid) models. The group of homogenous models contains two subgroups: models based on transport equation and pressure based models. Several works tried to order particular approaches and presented short reviews of selected studies. However, these classifications are too rough to be treated as sufficiently accurate. The aim of this paper is to present the development paths of numerical investigations of cavitating flows with the use of homogeneous approach in order of publication year and with relatively detailed description. Each of the presented model is accompanied by examples of the application area. This review focuses not only on the list of the most significant existing models to predict sheet and cloud cavitation, but also on presenting their advantages and disadvantages. Moreover, it shows the reasons which inspired present authors to look for new ways of more accurate numerical predictions and dimensions of cavitation. The article includes also the division of source terms of presented models based on the transport equation with the use of standardized symbols.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of the petrographic analysis of 20 aggregates from different regions of Poland, carried out on thin section analyzed under a microscope in transmitted light. Samples of coarse aggregate fractions up to 16 mm came from the production of crushed aggregates from solid rocks and glacial deposits. Evaluation of the mineral composition of the aggregate regarding to recognition of the harmful component was made due to content of reactive silica minerals: including opal, cristobalite, tridymite, chalcedony, or size of quartz crystals: crypto- or microcrystalline quartz and quartz in stress state. Application of petrographic identification of thin sections allowed for preliminary qualification of aggregate to potentially reactive or reactive category. The results support the decision about suitability of aggregate as components of the concrete or refer them for further detailed research or reject them.

Opis:
The objective of this investigation was to test the effectiveness of the Acoustic Emission (AE) mea- surements in determining the critical stresses during four-point bending of mortar beams. Within the measuring procedure the parameter σcr/σ300 was calculated and analysed. Additionally, the influence of cement replacement by high calcium fly ash (HCFA) on the process of crack healing was discussed. Mortar beams with different content of HCFA and reinforced by steel microfibres were prepared for tests. After curing in standard conditions the beams were subjected to four-point bending test in order to introduce the pre-cracking. Thereafter the beams were cured in the lime water and loaded after 56 and 112 days in the same way as for the first time. Additionally the microstructure of mortars was studied in a stereo optical microscope as well in an electron scanning microscope including the Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The results of microstructural characterization of mortar containing HCFA from lignite combustion are presented. The applied load level slightly exceeded the critical stress, producing intense crack growth processes however did not significant affected the load capacity of the beams. During the consecutive loading the decreasing tendency of σcr/σ300 ratio was noted. The obtained results confirm that the latter parameter can be applied as a measure of the composite degradation level for the elements carrying the repeated loads of amplitude close to the critical stress of the structure and also that the cement replacement with HCFA influences the process of crack healing.

Opis:
In Poland, rabbit is a highly valued animal, due to dietetic and flavour values of its meat, but above all, rabbits tend to be commonly used laboratory animals. The aim of the study was developing standards for counts of B-cells with CD19+ receptor, T-cells with CD5+ receptor, and their subpopulations, namely T-cells with CD4+, CD8+ and CD25+ receptor in the peripheral blood of mixed-breed Polish rabbits with addition of blood of meet breeds, including the assessment of the impact of four seasons of the year and animal sex on the values of the immunological parameters determined. The results showed that the counts of B- and T-cells and their subpopulations in peripheral blood remain within the following ranges: for CD19+ B-cells: 1.05 - 3.05%, for CD5+ T-cells: 34.00 - 43.07%, CD4+ T-cells: 23.52 - 33.23%, CD8+ T-cells: 12.55 - 17.30%, whereas for CD25+ T-cells: 0.72 - 2.81%. As it comes to the season of the year, it was observed that it principally affects the values of CD25+ T-cells, while in the case of rabbit sex, more changes were found in females.

Opis:
Mixed-breed rabbits in Poland are widely used for diagnostic and scientific research and as utility animals, therefore there is a need to know their immunological status, as well as their haematological status. In this study natural immunity factors were analyzed in Polish mixed-breed rabbits and Polish mixed-breed rabbits with addition of blood of meet-breed, considering the impact of sex and season of the year (spring, summer, autumn, winter) using measurement of non-specific cellular and humoral immunity parameters in peripheral blood. The study has revealed that there is a variety between the two commonly used mixed-breed types of rabbits, especially when sex and season is concerned, which is crucial for using these animals in experiments.

Opis:
Introduction and objective: The growing expectations for the effectiveness of public health increase the demand for scientific literature, concerning research, reviews and other forms of information. The bibliographic databases are of crucial importance for researchers and policy makers. The objective of this study is to estimate the supply of scientific literature related to public health in selected European countries, which are available to a wide range of users. Materials and methods: Analysis of the number of bibliographic records on topics related to public health was based on searches in Ovid MEDLINE ( R) in May and June 2011. According to MeSH terms, 11 keywords and names of 13 European countries were used in the search. Publications from the years 2001–2010 were analyzed. A number of publications indexed under ‘public health’, and related to selected countries were compared with the size of the population of those countries, GDP, total expenditure on health and burden of disease (DALYS’s). Results: The most popular topic was ‘health policy’, whereas the topics ‘occupational health’ and ‘environmental health’ were less prevalent. There were no significant changes in the number of publications in 2001–2010. The number of articles indexed under ‘public health’ had significant positive correlation with national GDP, expenditure on health and population size, and negative with DALY’s. Conclusions: According to the criteria accepted in this study, the Nordic countries – Finland, Sweden and Norway – were very productive in this respect. Poland and other Central European Countries were less productive.
