Opis:
In this paper we revise recent results of our team in the optimization of twisted nematic liquid crystal displays to be used as spatial light modulators for image processing and diffractive optics. In general two kind of responses are desired for the mentioned applications: amplitude-only and phase-only modulations. However, it is not a trivial task to find the polarization configurations for which these responses are obtained. We show that a reverse-engineering approach is needed to optimize the liquid crystal display response. According to this reverse-engineering approach the modulation characteristics can be calibrated by evaluating the modulation response in a few polarization configurations. These results are used to fit the liquid crystal display behavior to a simplified physical model, which uses two modulation parameters. We demonstrate that the degree of accuracy of this model is very high, thus enabling the prediction of the modulation behavior of the display at other polarization configurations. Therefore, we can perform computer searches for the optimum orientation of the polarizing elements to obtain the required optical transmission. We demonstrate the need to use short wavelengths and the need to insert wave plates in front and behind the liquid crystal displays to obtain either amplitude-only or phase-only regime.

Opis:
One of the most promising technologies for suppressing the growth of malignant (cancer) cells without adversely affecting normal cells involves the application of physiologically-patterned and bioquantum compatible magnetic fields with specific temporal increments generated by optocoupler circuits through each of the three spatial planes. However, experimentally generated magnetic field patterns designed to target cancer cells are also immersed within the magnetic environment of the incubators. We measured anomalous alterations in the horizontal (primarily “east-west”) component of the geomagnetic static field intensity within cell incubators when the most effective experimental field was being generated between three sets of solenoids. The eccentric response was a function of the six solenoids being wrapped or not wrapped with copper foil. In addition, activating or deactivating the experimental field for fixed increments was associated with discrete and obvious DC shifts in the horizontal component as well as emergent patterns that were not a component of either the experimental field or the background incubator 60 Hz source. If the temporal pattern that defines the effects induced by these magnetic fields is analogous to the spatial patterns that define chemical functions, failure to accommodate these anisotropic transients could be a source of the frequent contradictions and inter-laboratory failures to replicate these phenomena. We suggest that the emergent phenomena from these interactions with quantum-like features may be the causal variables responsible for many of the promising effects for cancer suppression. A modified Dicke model derived from quantum optics where cells cooperatively interact with a single mode of the field and their dipole fields interact coherently may accommodate the observed effects.

Opis:
Solar-blind ultraviolet cameras as part of high-voltage electrical inspections until recently have mostly been used for pure observations. These observations only imply the presence of corona discharges and not the severity thereof. A radiometric algorithm together with a calibration algorithm to perform an optical energy measurement were presented earlier. This is a guide on how to apply the algorithm to determine the total optical measurement from corona discharges, plus additional processing. This guide and additions are used to compare the electrical and optical domains with actual examples. The main objective is to illustrate how to determine the electrical and optical relation for the IEC 60720 high-voltage electrical test configurations using a standard open procedure.

Opis:
The fruit processing industry generates huge amounts of waste annually, causing severe environmental problems. Mango processing produces around 20 million tons of wastes from the non-consumed fraction, mainly peels and seeds, which constitute 30–60% of the fruit weight. However, various phytochemicals found in these residues have been implicated in preventing cancer and also cardio-metabolic and gastrointestinal diseases. Particularly, phenolic compounds hold a promising potential to be utilized as modulatory agents of the human gut microbiota (prebiotics-like actions). This review article mainly discusses the effect of phenolics from mango wastes on gut microbiota modulation and its beneficial repercussions for human health. Moreover, it also discusses the importance of phenolic compounds of mango peel and seed kernel residues, their extraction, identification, and quantification.
