Opis:
This article focuses on the biochemical composition and the role of phytoplankton (primary producer) as a basic nutritional source in diets of fish. In general, an aquatic classical food web comprises phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish (planktivorous and predatory ones) as predominant elements, which in turn define the linear direction of an energy-flow pathway and nutritional transfer. Phytoplankton provides many valuable phytonutrients and biologically active ingredients, especially fatty acids, amino acids, sterols, organic minerals, enzymes, carotenoids, chlorophyll, trace elements, and vitamins, which are directly available for the first larval/juvenile stages of fish or indirectly (through trophic chains) for the more mature forms. Regarding the biochemical composition of phytoplankton, the most nutritional ones are lipids, which affect the growth, health and reproduction of aquatic animals, especially fish species. In general, the freshwater and marine chlorophytes and cryptophytes, and marine diatoms provide more polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA>SAFA>MUFA) than other groups, differently to fatty acids supplied by freshwater cyanobacteria (SAFA>MUFA>PUFA). Furthermore, cryptophytes have the highest n-3:n-6 ratio. A similarly high ratio is recorded in fatty acid composition of marine zooplankton with predominant PUFA. Addition of phytoplankton (e.g. Isochrysis galbana, Tetraselmis chui and Nannochloropsis oculata) to the process of fish larval rearing shows to improve the digestive functions at the pancreatic and intestinal levels. The most essential fatty acids for all fish are EPA and DHA, and the most popular fish species containing 4.08-11.84 mg g-1 of dry weight of EPA and DHA, as the sum, can be given in following order: Anguila anguila>Rutilus rutilus>Cyprinus carpio>Esox lucius>Blicca bjoerkna>Perca fluviatilis>Abramis brama>Sander lucioperca>Tinca tinca>Carassius carassius.

Opis:
This study focused on site-specific preferences of potentially harmful cyanobacterium Gloeotrichia echinulata to occur in lakes with different ecological and trophic conditions. Its pelagic growth was studied in six lakes from June to September in 1986-1988, 2000-2001 and 2009. In total, 78 samples were taken from the epilimnion (stratified lakes) or the whole water column (non-stratified lakes). Analyses of phytoplankton and environmental variables were performed according to standard methods. During summer, a distinct maximum of the Gloeotrichia growth was observed in July or August (the warmest period). Bloom events of G. echinulata occurred in lakes where the light and oxygen conditions were significantly inferior while the phosphorus content remained on a slightly elevated level. The distinct domination of this cyanobacterium (above 40% of the total phytoplankton biomass) was limited to lakes with a high, moderate or even poor ecological status, and to the meso-eutrophic or eutrophic state of lakes. However, G. echinulata occurred in a broader range of ecological and trophic conditions of lakes. The historical approach to mass occurrence of G. echinulata, with its possible contribution to phosphorus translocation from sediment to the pelagic zone, suggested its importance as an indicator of progressive ecological and trophic deterioration of lakes. This indication should be very useful for establishment of main targets in water management.

Opis:
A new phytoplankton-based method (the Phytoplankton Metric for Polish Lakes – PMPL) for the ecological status assessment of lakes has been developed in Poland. This method has not been validated and tested on independent data, hence the aim of the study was to check the applicability of this method and the sensitivity of different phytoplankton metrics along pressure gradient. Phytoplankton data were collected from 33 Polish lowland lakes (20 stratified, 13 non-stratified), during the growth season in the period from 2005 to 2009. The biomass of phytoplankton was calculated from cell volume measurements and chlorophyll a concentration was determined spectrophotometrically by the alcohol method. Total nitrogen and total phosphorus concentrations were determined by standard methods (PN-EN ISO 6878:2006p.7 and PN-EN 25663:2001, respectively) and water transparency was measured using a Secchi disk. For comparability, an ecological status was determined according to three phytoplankton- based methods: Polish, German and Hungarian. Polish metrics showed a strong correlation with the other metrics (German, Hungarian), which are broadly and successfully used for assessment in Europe. However, a statistically significant correlation was found between all the metric values and the main parameters: total phosphorus, total nitrogen and Secchi disk visibility. The metrics based on quantitative phytoplankton features were more sensitive to the growth of eutrophication than others, based on indicator taxa. Total phosphorus demonstrated a stronger relationship with the tested metrics than total nitro gen. Phytoplankton metrics reacted quite well to pressure gradients because of the decreasing tendency of metric values along the TP and TN gradient and an increasing tendency along the Secchi disk visibility gradient. The multimetric PMPL may be recommended as useful for the assessment of the ecological status of Polish lakes.
Biomasę fitoplanktonu oszacowano metodą pomiaru objętości komórek, stężenie chlorofilu a w wodzie określono spektrofotometryczną metodą alkoholową. Zawartość fosforu i azotu ogólnego oznaczono standardowymi metodami (odpowiednio PN-EN ISO 6878:2006p.7 i PN- -EN 25663:2001), natomiast widzialność wyznaczono z użyciem krążka Secchi’ego. Ocenę stanu ekologicznego określono według trzech metod fitoplanktonowych: polskiej, niemieckiej i węgierskiej.

Opis:
This study focused on the phytoplankton and environment relationships as well as on the ecological and trophic conditions of lakes inhabited by coregonid fish. Studies were carried out in deep and stratified vendace-type lakes called Lake Pluszne and Lake Łańskie (the Olsztyn Lake District, north-eastern Poland) in 2007-2008. Ecological and trophic conditions were determined on the basis of the phytoplankton multi-metric PMPL and Trophic State Index. Both lakes were characterized by a similar thermal and mictic regime, with the occurrence of hypolimnetic oxygen deficits. They were classified as hydrocarbonate-calcium type and medium-sized eutrophicated water bodies. According to the integrated trophy assessment, proposed in this research, the final Trophic State Index TSIAV indicated meso-eutrophy of both lakes, although the phytoplankton-based PMPL indicated that the ecological potential in Lake Łańskie was good and less than good - due to large cyanobacteria biomasses - in Lake Pluszne. The actual loads of phosphorus and nitrogen significantly exceeded permissible levels, especially in Lake Łańskie (5-fold at the most of the P content), at similar morphometric and sedimentation conditions in both lakes. However, more intensive water-exchange rate and more favorable conditions for phosphorus runoff in Lake Łańskie could limit the phytoplankton growth, especially cyanobacteria. Summing up, better oxygen conditions and less abundant phytoplankton suggested that Lake Łańskie had more suitable conditions for coregonids during the surveyed period than Lake Pluszne, where the vendace biomass has recently decreased drastically.

Opis:
Seasonal and spatial changes of phytoplankton in relation to environmental variables affecting the water quality were investigated along the main channel of Lake Nasser throughout 2013. In total, 104 phytoplankton species, belonging to 7 classes, were identified. Phytoplankton assemblages were dominated by Bacillariophyceae, Cyanophyceae and Chlorophyceae, whereas Dinophyceae, Euglenophyceae, Chrysophyceae and Cryptophyceae were infrequent. Cyclotella glomerata, C. ocellata and Aulacoseira granulata represented the most abundant species among Bacillariophyceae. Cyanophyceae was dominated by Planktolyngbya limnetica and Eucapsis minuta, and Chlorophyceae by Ankistrodesmus fusiformis and Staurastrum paradoxum. The water column was thermally stratified during summer, while being mixed throughout winter. Phytoplankton features and physicochemical variables were analyzed with the principal component analysis. Electrical conductivity and water temperature were the most common factors negatively controlling phytoplankton density. Phytoplankton density was positively associated with NO3, whereas it was negatively correlated with PO4 and HCO3. Cyanophyceae were strongly adapted to the environmental variables and NO2 was limiting their growth. Chlorophyceae were more dependent on PO4 than NO3. The vertical distribution of Chl a was associated with the summer thermal stratification and its concentration increased southwards. Chl a was affected by NO2 and linked to Chlorophyceae. The regional variations of phytoplankton reflected its response to varying environmental conditions. The annual average of the trophic state index indicated eutrophic waters of Lake Nasser.

This paper presents the effects of an application of Effective Microorganisms (EM) technology in line with the method developed by Sitarek, thus evaluating its effectiveness as a tool in the biological restoration of a water body. In 2012-2013, EM was applied in Muchawka Reservoir situated in the town of Siedlce (eastern Poland). Analyses of water parameters and bottom sediments were carried out in 2011, before the EM technology was implemented and again in 2013-2015 after the EM application was completed. In spring 2011, the average total nitrogen (TN) content at the surface was 3.1 mg dm-3 while the total mineral nitrogen content equalled 0.893 mg dm-3. After the EM application was completed, in the summer of 2013, the TN content was on average 2.5 mg dm-3. The content of nitrates and nitrites in the summer of 2013 reached 1.20 mg dm-3 at the most. Lower levels of such forms of nitrogen were observed in 2013 and also in subsequent years at the bathing beach (site 1) and the hostel (site 3) than at the inflow (site 4). Likewise, the highest content of phosphates was recorded at the inflow site (4), being four -fold lower at the other sites (1, 3). The average content of TP before the EM technology was applied was 0.205 mg dm-3, whereas after the application of effective microorganisms it fell down to 0.189 mg dm-3 (2013-2015). Only slight changes of TSITP indicated that waters in Muchawka Reservoir were eutrophic. After EM was applied twice, no streaks, cyanobacterial scums or pollution at the bathing sites were visible. The bacteriological evaluation of the water samples was carried out by the County Branch of the State Sanitary Inspectorate in Siedlce. The bacteriological water quality was described as “excellent”. These findings suggest that the method developed by Sitarek, combined with probiotic preparations, could be a useful tool in the restoration of water bodies, but the conclusion requires further detailed verification.

Opis:
Dead cells of Chlorella vulgaris were used experimentally to remove cadmium (Cd2+), copper (Cu2+) and lead (Pb2+) ions from aqueous solution under various conditions of pH, biosorbent dosage and contact time. C. vulgaris was isolated from Lake Manzala, (Egypt) and then cultivated outdoors, in growth media, maintaining pH of nearly 7.5. After cultivation, the cells were harvested by coagulation and prepared to make an experiment with different variants of pH, contact time and adsorbent dose. The adsorption specific characteristics of C. vulgaris were examined using Fourier Transformation Infrared Spectroscopy (FTR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The FTIR and SEM data showed vibration frequency changes for the peaks corresponding to the surface functional groups and morphological changes of C. vulgaris, respectively, after its exposure to metal ion solution. The maximum removal efficiency for copper and lead at ambient room temperature was recorded at pH 5 and 20-minute contact time, while the contact time of 120 minutes at pH 6 created the most suitable conditions for cadmium biosorption. On the other hand, 2 g dm-3 of C. vulgaris under optimum conditions was sufficient to remove 95.5%, 97.7% and 99.4% of Cd2+, Cu2+ and Pb2+, respectively, from a mixed solution of 50 mg dm-3 of each metal ion. The removal trend was in order of Pb2+ > Cu2+ > Cd2+. The results suggested that the biomass of C. vulgaris is an extremely efficient and environmentally friendly biosorbent for the removal of Cd2+, Cu2+ and Pb2 from aqueous solutions, which may be applied on a large, industrial scale.
