The aim of this paper is to present and analyse the views on logic of the members of the so-called Cracow Circle, namely the Dominican Father Józef (Innocenty) M. Bocheński, Rev. Jan Salamucha, and Jan Franciszek Drewnowski. They tried to apply the methods of modern formal/mathematical logic to philosophical and theological problems. In particular, they attempted to modernise contemporary Thomism (the trend which was then prevailing) by employing logical tools. The influence of Jan Łukasiewicz, the co-founder of the Warsaw School of Logic will be also discussed.

Powodem tego była przede wszystkim niejasność jego prac i nieścisły język, jakim były napisane, jak również podporządkowanie matematyki mętnym w istocie ideom filozoficznym

The aim of the paper is to study the role and features of proofs in mathematics. Formal and informal proofs are distinguished. It is stressed that the main roles played by proofs in mathematical research are verification and explanation. The problem of the methods acceptable in informal proofs, in particular of the usage of computers, is considered with regard to the proof of the Four-Color Theorem. The features of in-formal and formal proofs are compared and contrasted. It is stressed that the concept of an informal proof is not precisely defined, it is simply practised and any attempts to define it fail. It is - so to speak - a practical notion, psychological, sociological and cultural in character. The second one is precisely defined in terms of logical con-cepts. Hence it is a logical concept which is rather theoretical than practical in char-acter. The first one is - in part at least - semantical in nature, the second is entirely syntactical. A proof-theoretical thesis, similar to the Turing-Church Thesis in the re-cursion theory, is formulated. It says that both concepts of a proof in mathematics are equivalent. Arguments for and against it are formulated.

This paper illustrates and critically evaluates Jan Franciszek Drewnowski’s philosophical views on mathematics and logic. It is based on four sources. The main source is his “Zarys programu filozoficznego” (“Outline of a Philosophical Program”) (1934). Further sources include two of Drewnowski’s papers, “Stosowanie logiki symbolicznej w filozofii” (“Application of symbolic logic in philosophy”) (1965) and “Uwagi o stosowaniu logiki symbolicznej” (“Remarks on applying symbolic logic”) (1967), as well as fragments from his diary. This paper aims to show how Drewnowski understood mathematics and mathematical theories, how he conceived logic and its role in science, as well as to what extent he was familiar with contemporary achievements in mathematical logic and the foundations of mathematics and his awareness of their relevance for the philosophy of mathematics.
Praca poświęcona jest prezentacji i krytycznej ocenie poglądów filozoficznych Jana Franciszka Drewnowskiego na matematykę i logikę. Podstawą rozważań są cztery źródła. Podstawowym źródłem jest Drewnowskiego "Zarys programu filozoficznego" (1934), dalej dwa artykuły, a mianowicie "Stosowanie logiki symbolicznej w filozofii" (1965) oraz "Uwagi o stosowaniu logiki symbolicznej" (1967), w końcu fragmenty dziennika. Pokazuje się w niej, jak Drewnowski rozumiał matematykę i teorie matematyczne, jak widział logikę i jej rolę w nauce oraz na ile był zaznajomiony ze współczesnymi osiągnięciami w zakresie logiki matematycznej i podstaw matematyki oraz z ich konsekwencjami dla filozofii matematyki.

Artykuł przybliża pojmowanie katechizmu w Kościele na przestrzeni wieków. Analizie poddana jest zarówno terminologia - z rozróżnieniem pojęć: katechizm i katechizmy –jak i odpowiadające pojęciom konkretne dzieła. Autor czyni niezbędne rozróżnienia metodologiczne i etymologiczne terminów w omawianym zakresie, dokładnie dokumentując swą refleksję licznymi źródłami. Szczegółowo omówiony został katechizm-książka jako niezbędne i uprzywilejowane narzędzie religijnego wychowania – począwszy od pierwszych tekstów katechetycznych, aż po rozpoczętą w XVI wieku erę katechizmów. Artykuł zawiera odpowiedź na pytanie postawione w tytule, co ma szczególne znaczenie w kontekście obchodzonego Roku Wiary, w świętowaniu którego Katechizm Kościoła Katolickiego znalazł centralne miejsce.
catechism-book? The article is moving closer comprehending the catechism at the Church over the centuries. In it an extensive sense of the term and transformation are portrayed in understanding him. The author is also making necessary distinguishing of methodological and etymological notions in the scope discussed, precisely documenting one's reflection with numerous sources. In the article in detail a catechism was discussed as the essential and privileged tool of the religious education - starting from the first catechetical texts, until the era initiated in the 16th century and lasting until today of catechisms. Answer to a question given in the text included in the title is of special importance in the context of the Year of the Faith, into which celebration the Catechism of the Catholic Church found the central place.
L’articolo tende di migliorare la comprensione del catechismo nella Chiesa nel corso dei secoli. All’analisi è sottoposto sia terminologia - una distinzione tra i concetti di catechismo e catechismi -, che i concetti corrispondenti alle opere concrete. L’autore fa le necessarie distinzioni metodologici ed etimologici, documentandole con numerose sorgenti. È discusso in dettaglio il catechismo come uno strumento indispensabile e privilegiato per l’educazione religiosa - dai primi testi catechetici fino a, iniziata nel cinquecento, epoca di catechismi. L’articolo contiene la risposta alla domanda posta nel suo titolo, che è di particolare importanza nel contesto dell’Anno della Fede, in cui il Catechismo della Chiesa Cattolica ha trovato un posto centrale.

The document presented in the article dates from the time of Charlemagne and was part of his reform program of religious and intellectual life. Its origins must be sought in Alcuins’ letter of 796, addressed to Charlemagne (a copy of this letter was also sent to Arno, the Archbishop of Salzburg), which – after a failed mission to the Saxons – offered rulers a new form of evangelising the Avars. Recalling the disappointment of attempts to evangelise in Saxony, he warns against making too rapid and violent actions. They have to be taught first, and then baptised. At the end of the letter, referring to St. Augustine’s De catechizandis rudibus, he states what teachings in the truths of the faith they must receive before baptism. This letter sent to both the king and the bishop Arno gave the unknown author (editor) a framework and plan for the drafting of Ordo de catechizandis rudibus. The document appeared in the surroundings of the bishop Arno about the year 800. The word Ordo used in the title indicates that it is a kind of guide with guidelines for teaching adults before baptism. Although the title of the document was taken from the work of Saint Augustine of the same title, it differs substantially from its original. The Carolingian Ordo can be divided into four parts or sections. The first part (1-13) is a comprehensive introduction showing the need to instruct catechumens and the overall characteristics of the process of Christian initiation. The second part (14-44) includes the initiatory catechesis and provides topics covered in teaching converts. The content consists of biblical texts and the writings of various Fathers of the Church and practical instructions derived from the work of St. Augustine. The third part (45-74) presents the liturgical rites of baptism. In the fourth part (75-94), the document explains the baptismal rite itself and the other celebrated sacraments of Christian initiation – the Eucharist and Confirmation. The Ordo text ends with a call to neophytes to faithfully fulfil in practice what has been communicated to them.
