- Opis:
- Klaudia Muca’s chapter The Other in Me. Paradoxes of Self-identification in Literary Testimonies of Aphasia aims at introducing the theme of aphasia as a phenomenon of paradoxical self-identification. Aphasia is a result of organic brain damage which causes loss of memory of experiences as well as memory of language. Regaining speaking and writing abilities, memory and sense of self-identity is a long-term process, represented in the narrations of those who suffered from aphasia. In the chapter, two particular narrations are taken into consideration. Karolina Wiktor—an author of wołgą przez afazję—and Jill Bolte Taylor—an author of My Stroke of Insight—prove that self-identification has many transitional periods, such as recognising “self” as a “non-self” (while looking in the mirror for instance). Thanks to mental hypostasis, which was first perceived as something alien, has since been included in self-narration and as such become a part of “self”. The article reaches the conclusion that “self” is a dynamic phenomenon. The results of the analysis of aphasia patient testimonies are examined in light of the C. Malabou’s concept of plasticity of the subject.
