    The fifth part of the cycle is devoted to the presentation of the main Parisian musical critics’ opinions on the Tannhäuser’s performance at Palais Garnier on May 13th, 1895, conducted by Paul Taffanel and directed by Alexander Lapissida. If these journalists – such as Jacques Weber of Le Temps, Catulle Mendès of La Revue de Paris, Hippolyte Fierens-Gevaert of Journal des débats, Paul Dukas of La Revue hebdomadaire, Ferdinand Le Borne of Le Monde artiste, Henry Gauthier-Villars of L’Écho de Paris, Alfred Bruneau of Gil Blas, and some others that are recalled in the article, were not unanimous on various aspects of this production, all of them considered Ernest Van Dyck, interpreting the title role, as the principle triumphator of the evening.

    The subject of the article is the French reception of Tannhäuser after the failure of the three première performances in March 1861. From 1862 to 1894 the Parisian audience had to content itself with shorter or longer selections of this opera executed during Sunday concerts of Jules Pasdeloup’s, Edouard Colonne’s and Charles Lamoureux orchestras. In 1891 some French and foreign journalists, encouraged by the first Tannhäuser’s representations in Bayreuth, the Temple of Wagnerian art, began the discussions on the value of this work, some of them trying to prove that it’s a  m u s i c a l   d r a m a  as good as his later achievements, some other, on the contrary, pretending that Tannhäuser is an opera, marvelous, outstanding, extraordinary, but only an  o p e r a.

    Artykuł opisuje historię paryskich przedstawień Tristana i Izoldy Wagnera, skupiając się na trzech okresach: Belle Epoque, dwudziestoleciu międzywojennym i latach czterdziestych XIX wieku. Autor przypomina obsady i recenzje prasowe głównych przedstawień tego muzycznego dramatu. Premiera Tristana w Operze Paryskiej odbyła się 14 grudnia 1904 roku pod dyrekcją Paula Taffanela. Wcześniej dzieło to wystawiane było w języku francuskim nie tylko za granicą – w Brukseli i Monte Carlo, w teatrach operowych prowincji francuskich, ale także w teatrach paryskich, Nouveau-Théâtre (w 1899) i Théâtre du Château-d'Eau (w 1902 r.) – z prywatnych inicjatyw Charlesa Lamoureux, Willy’ego Schütza i Alfreda Cortota. W okresie międzywojennym Tristana wystawiali w Paryżu – w latach dwudziestych XX wieku – artyści włoscy i holenderscy (pod dyrekcją Tullio Serafina i Alberta Van Raalte) oraz drugi paryski teatr operowy – Opéra-Comique (najpierw pod dyrekcją Désiré-Émile’a Inghelbrechta najpierw, a następnie pod rządami Alberta Wolffa). Po ponownym pojawieniu się Tristana i Izoldy w repertuarze Opery Paryskiej w 1930 r. doszło do niezwykłej rywalizacji dwóch paryskich teatrów operowych grających ten dramat w tym samym czasie. Wspomniane w artykule niezwykłe wykonania Tristana i Izoldy dali w Paryżu artyści niemieccy (lub austriaccy) pod dyrekcją Franza Schalka, Karla Elmendorffa, Leo Blecha, Franza von Hoesslina i oczywiście Wilhelma Furtwänglera w latach trzydziestych. Prawie 90 lat po tak zwanym „sezonie anglo-amerykańskim” w Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Opera Paryska zapowiada siedem przedstawień prawdziwego anglo-amerykańskiego Tristana, które odbędą się w styczniu i lutym 2023 roku z udziałem amerykańskich i brytyjskich artystów w rolach głównych.
    The paper describes the history of the Parisian performances of Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde focusing on these of the three periods: the Belle Epoque, the interwar period and the nineteen fourties. The author reminds the casts and the press reviews of the main spectacles of this musical drama. Tristan’s premiere at the Paris Opera took place on December 14th, 1904 conducted by Paul Taffanel. Earlier, this work had been executed in French, not only abroad – in Brussels and Monte Carlo, at the opera theatres in French provinces, but also in Parisian theatres, Nouveau-Théâtre (in 1899) and Théâtre du Château-d’Eau (in 1902) – due to private initiatives of Charles Lamoureux, Willy Schütz and Alfred Cortot. During the interwar period, Tristan was staged in Paris – in nineteen twentieth – by Italian and Dutch artists (under Tullio Serafin and Albert Van Raalte) and by the second Parisian opera theatre – the Opéra-Comique (under Désiré-Émile Inghelbrecht first, and under Albert Wolff next). After the reappearance of Tristan and Isolde in the Paris Opera’s repertoire in 1930 an unusual rivalry of the two Parisian opera theatres playing this drama in the same time took place. The remarkable performances of Tristan and Isolde – mentioned in the paper – were given in Paris by German (or Austrian) artists conducted by Franz Schalk, Karl Elmendorff, Leo Blech, Franz von Hoesslin and of course by Wilhelm Furtwängler in nineteen thirties. Almost 90 years after so called „Anglo-American Season” at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Paris Opera is announcing seven performances of the real Anglo-American Tristan to take place in January and February 2023, with the American and British artists in the principal roles.

    Zaledwie kilka tygodni po światowej premierze Pierścienia Nibelunga w Bayreuth w sierpniu 1876 roku wielki francuski dyrygent Jules Pasdeloup, który zbojkotował festiwal ze względów bynajmniej nie artystycznych, a jedynie patriotycznych, postanowił włączyć do programu swoich niedzielnych paryskich koncertów fragment tego arcydzieła: Marsz na śmierć Zygfryda z trzeciego aktu Zmierzchu bogów. 29 X 1876 r. w Cyrku zimowym Pasdeloup zmuszony był stawić czoła wrogim reakcjom niektórych słuchaczy, którzy, niczym publiczność premiery Tannhäusera piętnaście lat wcześniej w Sali Opery Paryskiej przy ulicy Le Peletier, przy pomocy gwizdków ochoczo używanych w trakcie koncertu, wyrażali swój negatywny stosunek do niemieckiego kompozytora. Niemniej liczne fragmenty zaczerpnięte z Pierścienia Nibelunga w kolejnych latach i dekadach były wykonywane zarówno przez Jules’a Pasdeloup i jego muzyków, jak i jego kolegów Edouarda Colonne’a i Charles’a Lamoureux oraz ich następców. Atoli pełne cztery części cyklu pojawiły się na scenie Palais Garnier znacznie później: premiera Walkirii miała miejsce dopiero 12 V 1893 r. pod kierownictwem muzycznym Colonne’a (z udziałem solistów Rose Caron w partii Zyglindy, Belga Ernesta Van Dycka w partii Zygmunda, Szwajcarki Lucienne Bréval w roli Brunhildy i Jean-François Delmasa – w roli Wotana, który tę partię – nie tylko zresztą w Walkirii, ale i w innych częściach cyklu, a także partię Hagena w Zmierzchu bogów, interpretować będzie niezmiennie w Paryżu przez z górą trzydzieści lat). Zygfryd pojawił się na scenie Opery Paryskiej – 3 I 1902 r. pod dyrekcją Paula Taffanela z polskim tenorem Janem Reszke, któremu partnerowała ulubienica Cosimy Wagner Louise Grandjean. Pedro Gailhard, którego druga kadencja na stanowisku dyrektora Opery Paryskiej dobiegła końca 31 XII 1907 r., nie podjął próby wystawienia całości wagnerowskiej Tetralogii. Zadanie to zrealizowali jego następcy, Leimistin Broussan, który miał w swoim dorobku pierwszą francuską inscenizację Pierścienia Nibelunga w Lyonie w kwietniu 1904 r., i kompozytor André Messager, wielki miłośnik i znawca wagnerowskich dramatów. Zmierzch bogów i Złoto Renu, w takiej nietypowej kolejności, pojawiły się na afiszu pierwszej francuskiej sceny w l. 1908 i 1909, poprzedzając wykonania kompletnego cyklu Tetralogii pod batutą austriackich kapelmistrzów Felixa Weingartnera (w l. 1911 i 1912) i Arthura Nikischa (w roku 1911) oraz wspomnianego współdyrektora Opery Paryskiej André Messagera (w roku 1913). Artykuł omawia wszystkie te historyczne spektakle, przedstawiając ich ocenę przez francuskich krytyków muzycznych, jak również kilka innych – nieco dziś zapomnianych – inscenizacji Tetralogii (lub jej części), które miały miejsce w następnych latach, zwłaszcza w lutym 1928 i w kwietniu 1933 r. w Operze Paryskiej, a także w czerwcu 1929 r. – w Théâtre des Champs-Elysées przy avenue Montaigne 15 – w wykonaniu „Teatru z Bayreuth” pod dyrekcją Franza von Hoesslin z udziałem między innymi słynnej pary Nanny Larsen-Todsen (w partii Brunhildy) i Lauritz Melchior (w rolach Zygmunda i Zygfryda). Konkludując, artykuł, pisany „w przeddzień” nowej inscenizacji Tetralogii w Operze Paryskiej (w reżyserii Hiszpana Calixto Bieito, znanego ze swych kontrowersyjnych spektakli operowych, także wagnerowskich), autor wspomina krótko powojenne paryskie inscenizacje Tetralogii w Palais Garnier i w Opéra-Bastille, a także w Théâtre du Châtelet i w Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.
    Only a few weeks after the world Wagner’s Ring cycle premiere in Bayreuth in August 1876, the great French conductor Jules Pasdeloup, decided to include to the programme of his dominical Parisian concerts the first, short but famous, fragment of this masterpiece: Siegfried’s Funeral March from The Twilight of the Gods. He had to face hostile reactions of some spectators who, during its execution, acted like the audience of Tannhäuser’s premiere fifteen years before, using their whistles to express their negative attitude to the German composer. Nevertheless numerous other pieces taken from The Ring of the Nibelung were going to be performed by Pasdeloup and his musicians as well as by his colleagues Edouard Colonne and Charles Lamoureux in the following years. However the full four parts of the cycle appeared on the stage of The Palais Garnier much later and in unusual order. The Valkyrie was performed on 12 May 1893 conducted by Colonne (the cast included Rose Caron as Sieglinde, Ernest Van Dyck, as Siegmund, Lucienne Bréval as Brunnhilde and Jean-François Delmas as Wotan). Siegfried with the Polish famous tenor Jan Reszke in the title role had its premiere in Paris on 3 January 1902 conducted by Paul Taffanel and it was the last Wagner’s musical drama introduced to Palais Garnier’s repertoire during Pedro Gailhard’s directorship. His successors, Leimistin Broussan – who had previously presented The Ring cycle at Lyon’s Grand Theatre in April 1904 – and the composer André Messager, the great admirer and connoisseur of Wagner’s dramas, put on The Twilight of the Gods in 1908 and The Rhinegold next year, followed soon by the four full cycles of the Wagnerian Tetralogy conducted by Austrian conductors Felix Weingartner (in 1911 and in 1912) and Arthur Nikisch (in 1911) and finally by the co-director of the Paris Opera, André Messager. The paper recalls these historical performances, as well as few other performances of the Tetralogy (or its parts) that took place in the following years, especially in 1928, 1929 and 1933. Concluding the paper written on the eve of the new creation of the Tetralogy at the Opera Bastille (directed by Calixto Bieito, the Spanish artist well known for his controversial opera productions), the author reminds briefly the post-war Parisian productions of the Tetralogy at the Palais Garnier and at the Opera Bastille, as well as these at the Théâtre du Châtelet and at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.

    Tematem artykułu jest francuska recepcja Tannhäusera, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem różnych okoliczności słynnej paryskiej realizacji dzieła w marcu 1861 roku w Salle Le Peletier, szesnaście lat po jego prapremierze w Dreźnie. Autor zwraca uwagę, że w ciągu tych szesnastu lat Francuzi mogli zdobyć pewną wiedzę o twórczości Wagnera i jej entuzjastycznym odbiorze (artykuł Liszta w Journal des débats z 18 maja 1849 r. oraz jego książka „Lohengrin” i „Tannhaüser” de Richarda Wagnera opublikowany po francusku w Lipsku w 1851 r.) i krytyczny (artykuły François-Josepha Fétisa opublikowane w Revue et Gazette musicale de Paris od 6 czerwca do 8 sierpnia 1852 r.). Wykonanie uwertury do Tannhäusera na koncercie Orkiestry Towarzystwa św. Cecylii 24 listopada 1850 r., choć dalekie od ideału, pomogło położyć podwaliny pod francuski wagneryzm. Francuska premiera Tannhäusera odbyła się w Strasburgu 12 lipca 1855 roku. Utwór wykonał po niemiecku koloński zespół operowy pod dyrekcją Ferdinanda Rödera. Francuskie gazety były dość powściągliwe w tej sprawie. Pomysł wystawienia Tannhäusera w Paryżu zrodził się dwa lata później. We wrześniu 1857, w odpowiedzi na propozycje z Niemiec, kompozytor i impresario Léopold Amat, były dyrektor teatralny les Bouffes-Parisiens, zorganizował musicale i inne atrakcje w Homburgu, Ems i Wiesbaden. Podczas „festiwalu muzycznego” w Wiesbaden, 24 września 1857 roku, Tannhäuser Ryszarda Wagnera został wykonany przed ekskluzywną publicznością, w skład której weszło wielu zaproszonych przez organizatorów paryskich dziennikarzy. Goszcząc w Wiesbaden licznych przedstawicieli paryskiej prasy i pokazując im operę Wagnera, Amat chciał zainteresować francuską opinię publiczną dziełem niemieckiego kompozytora, mając nadzieję, że w niedalekiej przyszłości może być wystawiona w Paryżu. Dziennikarze paryscy byli zachwyceni programem muzycznym i towarzyszącymi atrakcjami, ale ich wrażenia z wystawienia Tannhäusera, zamierzonego jako punkt kulminacyjny uroczystości, nie były entuzjastyczne, o czym świadczą przytoczone w tym artykule recenzje. W konsekwencji projekty Amata spełzły na niczym. W dalszej części artykułu przedstawiono wydarzenia związane z paryską recepcją Tannhäusera w latach 1860 i 1861. Autorka omawia recenzje trzech koncertów wagnerowskich, które odbyły się w Théâtre-Italien – Salle Ventadour w styczniu i lutym 1860 roku, a zwłaszcza paryskiej premiery opery: odpowiedzi na takie pytania, jak okoliczności podjęcia decyzji o występie w Operze Paryskiej, problemy z francuskim tłumaczeniem libretta, relacje Wagnera z dyrygentem, orkiestrą i innymi pracownikami Opery Paryskiej, trzy marcowe spektakle Tannhäusera, główne przyczyny jego niepowodzenia i niejednoznaczne konsekwencje tego niepowodzenia, a także przeglądy prasy. Artykuł kończy się proroczymi słowami Baudelaire'a zapowiadającymi przyszłą rehabilitację Tannhäusera w Paryżu.
    The subject of this article is the French reception of Tannhäuser, with particular emphasis on various circumstances surrounding the famous Paris production of the work in March 1861 at the Salle Le Peletier, sixteen years after its world premiere in Dresden. The author draws attention to the fact that over those sixteen years, the French could have acquired some knowledge of Wagner’s work and its reception, both enthusiastic (Liszt’s article in Journal des débats of 18 May 1849 and his book ‘Lohengrin’ et ‘Tannhaüser’ de Richard Wagner published in French in Leipzig in 1851) and critical (François-Joseph Fétis’s articles published in Revue et Gazette musicale de Paris between 6 June and 8 August 1852). The performance of the overture to Tannhäuser in a concert given by the Saint Cecilia Society Orchestra on 24 November 1850, although far from ideal, helped to lay the foundations for French Wagnerism. The French premiere of Tannhäuser took place in Strasbourg on 12 July 1855. The work was performed in German by the Cologne opera company directed by Ferdinand Röder. The French papers were rather reticent on the subject. The idea of staging Tannhäuser in Paris arose two years later. In September 1857, in response to proposals from Germany, the composer and impresario Léopold Amat, a former theatre manager of les Bouffes-Parisiens, organised musical and other attractions in Homburg, Ems and Wiesbaden. During the ‘musical festivities’ in Wiesbaden, on 24 September 1857, Richard Wagner’s Tannhäuser was performed to an exclusive audience that included many Parisian journalists invited by the organisers. In hosting numerous representatives of the Parisian press in Wiesbaden and showing them Wagner’s opera, Amat wanted to interest French public opinion in the German composer’s work, hoping that it might subsequently be staged in Paris in the near future. The Parisian journalists were delighted with the musical programme and accompanying attractions, but their impressions of the performance of Tannhäuser, intended as the highlight of the festivities, were less than enthusiastic, as evidenced by the reviews quoted in this article. Consequently, Amat’s projects came to nought. The next part of the article presents events related to Parisian reception of Tannhäuser in 1860 and 1861. The author discusses reviews of the three Wagner concerts held at the Théâtre-Italien – Salle Ventadour in January and February 1860, and especially the opera’s Parisian premiere, addressing such questions as the circumstances surrounding the decision to perform it at the Paris Opera, problems with the French translation of the libretto, Wagner’s relations with the conductor, the orchestra and other members of the Paris Opera’s staff, the three March performances of Tannhäuser, the main causes of its failure and the ambiguous consequences of that failure, as well as press reviews. The article concludes with Baudelaire’s prophetic words announcing the future rehabilitation of Tannhäuser in Paris.

    Gilles de Rais, the Marshal of France - who in 1429 fought beside Joan of Arc in some crucial campaigns during the Hundred Years War (such as the siege of Orléans) - after her burning at the stake in 1431, and after his maternal grand-father’s death the next year, became one of the most cruel and perverted serial murderers, pedophiles and necrophiles in the history of humanity. The paper describes this astonishing transformation that led him from the glorious military achievements to the stake after the controversial trial in Nantes in 1440. The article tries to answer the question if this transgressor (in the common sense of the word), who continues to fascinate people almost six centuries after his death, can also be considered a transgressor according to the criteria proposed by Józef Kozielecki, a Polish psychologist, and the father of psychotransgressionism.     Catulle Mendès was a nineteenth century French poet, novelist, librettist, literary and music critic, very famous at his times but unjustly depreciated by the next generations. The paper reminds the sphere of his activity that should never be forgotten: Mendès appears first of all as one of the main figures of the early French Wagnerism. Born in Bordeaux on the 22nd May 1841 (twenty eight years to the day after the German Master!), he got to know Richard Wagner in Paris in 1860 where the composer was giving his three famous concerts at the Italian Theatre (Théâtre-Italien) and obtained, thanks to Princess Pauline Metternich, the chance to perform his opera Tannhäuser at the Paris Opera. Twentyyear- old Mendès invited Richard Wagner to cooperate with the periodical that he had just founded, La Revue fantaisiste. However Wagner hasn’t published any text in La Revue fantaisiste. Disgusted by his Tannhäuser’s failure in Paris, he left the French capital soon. Catulle Mendès missed the good occasion to create the first French « revue wagnérienne ». Firstly, his journal’s reaction to the scandal at the Paris Opera was very terse. Secondly, Auguste de Gasperini’s study of Wagner’s operas, announced by Mendès, was going to be published not in La Revue fantaisiste, but in Le Ménestrel, the most antiwagnerian French journal of these times. Thirdly, the number of texts on music in general and on Wagner in particular published by the journal founded by Catulle Mendès was extremely small and didn’t reflect in any way his musical or Wagnerian fascinations. A few years later, in summer 1869, Catulle Mendès with his wife Judith Mendès, née Gautier, and their friend Auguste Villiers de l’Isle-Adam paid a visit to Richard Wagner in Tribschen. It was a crucial moment for the development of their wagnerism. In September 1869 they observed in Munich the conflict between the composer and his patron, the king Ludwig II of Bavaria who wanted the first part of Wagner’s Tetralogy The Ring of the Nibelung, The Rhine Gold, to be performed then in Munich, despite the opposition of the author who preferred to keep all the parts of his monumental cycle for the new opera house that he was intending to construct as soon as possible somewhere in Bavaria. In 1879 Catulle Mendès wrote un roman à clef, a novel with a key, entitled Le Roi vierge – The Virgin king portraying the king Ludwig II of Bavaria and his complex relationship with Richard Wagner. This novel’s distribution in Bavaria was formally prohibited by the King who hadn’t appreciated its literary quality and his own portrait « painted » by the French writer. Responding to the King’s resolution, Catulle Mendès in 1886, a few months before Ludwig’s mysterious death, published another text à clef on Ludwig II of Bavaria and Richard Wagner. The short text entitled L’Épître au roi de Thuringe (The Epistle to the king of Thuringia) reflects their conflict of 1869 and enhances the role of a group of French Wagner’s admirers supporting the German composer in his struggle against his patron’s despotism. These two texts, Le Roi vierge and L’Épître au roi de Thuringe, are thoroughly analyzed by the author of the paper as literary expressions of Catulle Mendès’s Wagnerism.

    Słowo "la misère" ("nędza"), użyte po raz pierwszy w Psałterzu z Cambridge w roku 1120 i które pochodzi od łacińskiego słowa "miseria" (ubóstwo, nieszczęście), oznacza w języku francuskim przede wszystkim stan skrajnego ubóstwa, stan osoby pozbawionej środków do życia. Jednakże mówiąc o ludzkiej nędzy można mieć na myśli nie tylko aspekty ekonomiczne życia, ale także aspekty egzystencjalne, to co można za Malraux nazwać "kondycją ludzką". Nędza, w obu znaczeniach tego słowa i według tradycji biblijnej stanowi ludzką dolę od samego początku albo prawie od początku, od grzechu pierwszej pary ludzkiej w raju. To trzeci rozdział Księgi Rodzaju opisuje nam najpierw ten akt buntu, nieposłuszeństwo Adama i Ewy, akt, którego wszyscy ponosimy konsekwencje, a następnie gwałtowną reakcję Boga, skazującego rodzaj ludzki na wygnanie i nędzę. Autor referatu omawia temat nędzy (w obu znaczeniach słowa) w twórczości Michela Tourniera, w jego powieściach (Vendredi ou les limbes du Pacifique, Les Météores, La Goutte d'or, Eléazar ou la Source et le Buisson), intelektualnej autobiografii Le Vent Paraclet oraz w jego krótkich tekstach, esejach, opowiadaniach i nowelach (Le Roi Mage Faust, La Fugue du petit Poucet, Défense et illustration des mauvaises herbes, Misère et grandeur des nomades, Le Mendiant des étoiles.

    Michel Butor, born in 1926, one of the leaders of the French New Novel movement, has written only four novels between 1954 and 1960. The most famous of them is La Modification (Second thoughts), published in 1957. The author of the paper analyzes two other Butor’s novels: L’Emploi du temps (Passing time) – 1956, and Degrés (Degrees) – 1960. The theme of absence is crucial in both of them. In the former, the novel, presented as the diary of Jacques Revel, a young Frenchman spending a year in Bleston (a fictitious English city vaguely similar to Manchester), describes the narrator’s struggle to survive in a double – spatial and temporal – labyrinth. The first of them, formed by Bleston’s streets, squares and parks, is symbolized by the City plan. During his one year sojourn in the city, using its plan, Revel learns patiently how to move in its different districts, and in its strange labyrinth – strange because devoid any centre – that at the end stops annoying him. The other, the temporal one, symbolized by the diary itself, the labyrinth of the human memory, discovered by the narrator rather lately, somewhere in the middle of the year passed in Bleston, becomes, by contrast, more and more dense and complex, which is reflected by an increasinly complex narration used to describe the past. However, at the moment Revel is leaving the city, he is still unable to recall and to describe the events of the 29th of February 1952. This gap, this absence, symbolizes his defeat as the narrator, and, in the same time, the human memory’s limits. In Degrees temporal and spatial structures are also very important. This time round, however, the problems of the narration itself, become predominant. Considered from this point of view, the novel announces Gerard Genette’s work Narrative Discourse and his theoretical discussion of two narratological categories: narrative voice and narrative mode. Having transgressed his narrative competences, Pierre Vernier, the narrator of the first and the second parts of the novel, who, taking as a starting point, a complete account of one hour at school, tries to describe the whole world and various aspects of the human civilization for the benefit of his nephew, Pierre Eller, must fail and disappear, as the narrator, from the third part, which is narrated by another narrator, less audacious and more credible.

    W recepcji Richarda Wagnera we Francji są dwa kluczowe momenty. Pierwszy z nich jest bardzo dobrze znany miłośnikom opery na całym świecie: skandaliczne, wrogie reakcje niektórych widzów (zwłaszcza członków Jockey Club) podczas trzech paryskich wystawień Tannhäusera w marcu 1861 r., reakcje, które zrujnowały nadzieje Wagnera na karierę w Paryżu i we Francji. Drugi, być może mniej znany, jest w rzeczywistości o wiele ważniejszy: pierwsze wykonanie Lohengrina w Palais Garnier, 16 IX 1891 r., które zapoczątkowało wielką erę wagnerowską w Opéra de Paris. Pośmiertna belle époque Wagnera, która trwała do I wojny światowej, naznaczona była niezliczonymi słynnymi produkcjami jego oper i dramatów muzycznych nie tylko w Paryżu, ale także w wielu francuskich teatrach prowincjonalnych. Należy jednak pamiętać, że ostateczny triumf Lohengrina w Paryżu w 1891 r. poprzedziła długa, zacięta walka między zwolennikami Wagnera i jego nieprzejednanymi wrogami. W artykule przytoczono kilka tekstów o Lohengrinie po światowej premierze w Weimarze w 1850 r., w szczególności artykuł Gérarda de Nervala opublikowany w La Presse oraz entuzjastyczne artykuły Franza Liszta w Le Journal des débats (Paryż) i Illustrierte Zeitung (Lipsk). Te ostatnie, opublikowane w książce Liszta Lohengrin et Tannhaüser de Richard Wagner (wydrukowana w 1851 r., także w Lipsku, ale w języku francuskim, przeznaczona głównie dla czytelników francuskich), skłoniła François-Josepha Fétisa do odpowiedzi siedmioma krytycznymi artykułami na temat Wagnera, które ukazały się w La Revue et Gazette musicale de Paris w 1852 roku. Teksty węgierskiego kompozytora Liszta i belgijskiego krytyka muzycznego Fétisa, opublikowane w języku francuskim, doprowadziły do niekończących się konfrontacji między francuskimi wagnerofilami i wagnerofobami. Pomimo tej ożywionej dyskusji Lohengrin nie był wystawiany w żadnym teatrze we Francji w latach pięćdziesiątych XIX w., nawet we fragmentach lub w wersji koncertowej. Francuscy miłośnicy opery musieli zadowolić się artykułami prasowymi zawierającymi zwięzłe opisy niemieckich i austriackich produkcji. Francuska premiera Lohengrina zapowiadana była kilka razy pod koniec lat sześćdziesiątych w Théâtre-Lyrique Impérial. Jednak ani Léon Carvalho, ani jego następca Jules Pasdeloup nie zdołali wystawić tej opery. Pojawienie się na scenach francuskich Lohengrina i innych dzieł Wagnera z tego okresu, manifestujących jego gallofobię, takich jak Eine Kapitulation, zostało opóźnione przez wojnę francusko-pruską z 1870 roku. Pierwsze francuskie wykonanie tej opery – i jedyne w życiu Wagnera – odbyło się w 1881 r. w Nicei (w wersji włoskiej Salvatore Marchesi) pod batutą Auguste Vianesi. Po przerwach w próbach Lohengrina w Paryżu w Théâtre-Italien, Opéra-Comique i Palais Garnier w 1884, 1885 i 1886 r., mieszkańcy stolicy mogli wreszcie, dzięki wytrwałość Charlesa Lamoureux, podziwiać tę operę 3 V 1887 r. w teatrze Eden. Dyrygent planował dać dziesięć wystawień Lohengrina w ciągu sezonu, ale gwałtowne antyniemieckie i antywagnerowskie demonstracje, podsycane przez premiera René Gobleta, zmusiły go do odwołania wszystkich oprócz pierwszego, które – z czysto artystycznego punkt widzenia – było wielkim sukcesem. Cztery lata później, 16 IX 1891 r., Lamoureux ponownie poprowadził Lohengrina w Paryżu, tym razem w Palais Garnier. Krytycy porównali artystyczny poziom dwóch paryskich Lohengrinów. Chwalili prawie wszystkich śpiewaków nowego spektaklu, zwłaszcza Ernesta Van Dycka, powracającego do tytułowej roli, oraz Rose Caron, która zastąpiła Fidès Devriès w roli Elsy. W 1891 r., podobnie jak cztery lata wcześniej, wokół opery odbyły się demonstracje przeciwko Lohengrinowi i jego wystawieniom, ale tym razem rząd zareagował zupełnie inaczej. Autor wspomina kilka innych wykonań tej opery i słynnych paryskich wykonawców, takich jak Jan Reszke (Jean de Reszké) i jego brat Edward, Salomea Kruszelnicka, Lauritz Melchior, Lotte Lehmann, Germaine Lubin, Sandor Konya, Régine Crespin, Rita Görr, Wolfgang Windgassen, Elisabeth Grümmer, Siegfried Jerusalem, Jonas Kaufmann, René Pape oraz dwóch innych polskich śpiewaków: Rafał Siwek i Tomasz Konieczny.
    There are two crucial moments in Richard Wagner’s reception in France. The first one is very well known by opera lovers all over the world: the scandalous, hostile reactions of some spectators (especially members of the Jockey Club) during the three Parisian performances of Tannhäuser in March 1861, reactions which ruined Wagner’s hopes of a career in Paris and in France. The second one, perhaps less well known, is actually much more important: the first performance of Lohengrin at the Palais Garnier, on 16 September 1891, which opened the great Wagnerian era at the Opéra de Paris. Wagner’s posthumous belle époque, which lasted until the First World War, was marked by innumerable famous productions of his operas and music dramas not only in Paris but also in many French provincial theatres. One should remember, however, that Lohengrin’s definitive triumph in Paris, in 1891, was preceded by a long, fierce battle between Wagner’s supporters and his intransigent enemies. This paper cites several texts written about Lohengrin after its world premiere in Weimar, in 1850, especially Gérard de Nerval’s article published in La Presse and Franz Liszt’s enthusiastic articles in Le Journal des débats (Paris) and Illustrierte Zeitung (Leipzig). The latter, reproduced in Liszt’s book Lohengrin et Tannhaüser de Richard Wagner(printed in 1851, also in Leipzig, but in French, intended primarily for French readers), prompted the Belgian François-Joseph Fétis, to respond with seven critical articles on Wagner, which appeared in La Revue et Gazette musicale de Paris in 1852. Those texts by the Hungarian composer Liszt and the Belgian musical critic Fétis, published in French, gave rise to the endless confrontations between French Wagnerophiles and Wagnerophobes. In spite of that animated discussion, Lohengrin was not staged in any theatre in France during the 1850s, even in extracts or in a concert version. French opera lovers had to make do with press articles giving concise accounts of its German and Austrian productions. Lohengrin’s French premiere was announced several times in the late sixties at the Théâtre-Lyrique Impérial. However, neither Léon Carvalho nor his successor Jules Pasdeloup managed to produce this opera. Lohengrin’s appearance on French stages was delayed by the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and particularly by Wagner’s Gallophobe works of this period, such as Eine Kapitulation. The first French performance of this opera – and the only one in Wagner’s lifetime – took place in 1881 in Nice (in an Italian version by Salvatore Marchesi), under the baton of Auguste Vianesi. After some aborted attempts to perform Lohengrin in the capital at the Théâtre-Italien, the Opéra-Comique and the Palais Garnier in 1884, 1885 and 1886, Parisians could finally admire this opera at the Eden-Theater, on 3 May 1887, thanks to the perseverance of Charles Lamoureux. That famous conductor planned to give ten performances of Lohengrin over the course of the season, yet violent anti-German and anti-Wagnerian demonstrations, encouraged by the Prime Minister René Goblet, forced him to cancel all but the first, which from the purely artistic point of view was a great success. Four years later, on 16 September 1891, Lamoureux again conducted Lohengrin in Paris, this time at the Palais Garnier. Critics compared the artistic standard of the two Parisian Lohengrins. They praised almost all the singers of this new performance, especially Ernest Van Dyck, reprising the title role, and Rose Caron, who replaced Fidès Devriès as Elsa. In 1891, as four years earlier, demonstrations were held around the opera house against Lohengrin and its performances, but this time the government reacted quite differently. The Prime Minister, Charles de Freycinet, unlike René Goblet four years before, used the security forces to protect the artists. A few days later, the demonstrators stood down, as the German composer’s unusual masterpiece finally conquered the Parisian audience. That was the decisive battle, the turning point in Wagner’s reception in France. Since 1891, his operas and music dramas have enjoyed a remarkable career on French stages, with Lohengrin always one of the most admired. The author mentions several other performances of this opera and its famous Parisian interpreters, such as Jan Reszke (Jean de Reszké) and his brother Edouard, Salomea Krushelnytska, Lauritz Melchior, Lotte Lehmann, Germaine Lubin, Sandor Konya, Régine Crespin, Rita Görr, Wolfgang Windgassen, Elisabeth Grümmer, Siegfried Jerusalem, Jonas Kaufmann, René Pape, and two other Polish singers, Rafał Siwek and Tomasz Konieczny.

    In November and December 1894, a few months before the work’s reappearance on the Parisian stage, its very important selection (including especially the entire first and third acts) was presented by the count Eugène d’Harcourt, – by the way member of the elitist Jockey’s Club – during his “eclectic concerts” at the rue Rochechouart’s Salle de Concerts. The author of the article recalls juridical and artistic controversies provoked by these executions of Wagner’s opera. Tannhäuser’s fourth performance at Paris Opera’s stage was preceded, in the spring of 1895, by many publications, books and articles devoted to Wagner’s masterpiece. The most important, Étude sur « Tannhäuser » de Richard Wagner. Analyse et guide thématique, was written by Alfred Ernst and Élie Poirée who tried to show the value of Tannhäuser, considered already as a musical drama and an important stage of the composer’s evolution.

    The article is devoted to the presentation of various aspects of the Tannhäuser’s fourth performance on the Parisian stage on May 13th, 1895, conducted by Paul Taffanel and directed by Alexander Lapissida. The author, following the reviews that appeared in many Parisian journals after this performance, describes the most characteristic elements of the scenery made by Dauphin Amable Petit, known as Amable (the first tableau of the first act), Marcel Jambon (the second tableau of the first act and the third act) and Eugène Carpezat (the second act). All the reviewers underlined the enthusiastic reactions of the audience that were not only provoked by the brilliant interpretation of the Wagner’s opera by the artists in 1895 but first off all by its intention to efface the compromising recollections of the Parisian Tannhäuser’s premiere in 1861.
