Opis:
Characteristic points detection such as beginnings and ends of P-wave, T-wave or QRS complex is one of primary aims in automated analysis of ECG signal. The paper presents one possible approach based on Bayesian inference to design of kernel based classifier. The classification function is constructed using the probability distribution function of standard normal distribution and independent Gaussian random variables. The parameters of such variables are computed using iterative Expectation-Maximization algorithm. This approach is used to calculate parameters of classification function to modelling Takagi-Sugeno-Kang fuzzy systems. Numerical experiment of characteristic points detection in ECG signal using CTS database is also presented.

Opis:
The problem considered in this paper is the minimization of the lifetime variance of a complex system subject to its expected life and economic constraints. The example of a bridge network, in which all elements have constant failure rates, illustrates the problem. A numerical algorithm for solving this optimization problem by using exact formulae for system lifetime moments is included. Using this algorithm, we can obtain results better than the solutions known from earlier papers.

Opis:
This work presents the general idea of granular description of temporal signal, particularly biomedical signal sampled with constant frequency. The main idea of presented method is based on using triangular fuzzy numbers as information granules in temporal and amplitude spaces. The amplitude space contains values of first few derivatives of underlying signal. The construction of data granules is performed using the optimization method according to some objective function, which balances the high coverage ability and the low support of fuzzy numbers. The granules (descriptors) undergo the clustering process, namely fuzzy c-means. The centroids of created clusters form a granular vocabulary and the quality of description is quantitatively assessed by reconstruction criterion. There are presented results of experiments with the electrocardiographic signal, digitally sampled and stored in MIT-BIH database. The method of numerical differentiation of function based on finite set of its values is employed, which incorporates polynomial interpolation. The paper presents results of numerical experiments which show the impact of method parameters, such as temporal window length, degree of polynomial, fuzzification parameter, on the reconstruction ability of presented method.

Opis:
The paper presents a method for segmentation of images using region growing, with modification through the use of a correction coefficient based on the variation of intensity (brightness) in the neighborhood of the pixel of the interest. A method for the quantification of variability is based on differences in intensity, as well as the differences in intensity gradients in the surrounding pixels [10]. Evaluation of the gradients were determined by means of numerical differentiation, using the polynomial approximation [11]. The article presents the effects of application of developed methods for segmentation of images of the brain, lungs and heart.

Opis:
An electrocardiogram (ECG) is the prime tool in non-invasive cardiac electrophysiology and has a prime function in the screening and diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. However one of the greatest problems is that usually recording an electrical activity of the heart is performed in the presence of noise. The paper presents empirical Bayesian approach to problem of signal averaging which is commonly used to extract a useful signal distorted by a noise. The averaging is especially useful for biomedical signal such as ECG signal, where the spectra of the signal and noise significantly overlap. In reality the variability of noise can be observed, with power from cycle to cycle, which is motivation for weighted averaging methods usage. It is demonstrated that by exploiting a probabilistic Bayesian learning framework, it can be derived accurate prediction models offering significant additional advantage, namely automatic estimation of 'nuisance' parameters. Performance of the new method is experimentally compared to the traditional averaging by using arithmetic mean and weighted averaging method based on criterion function minimization.

The paper describes application of the fuzzy c-regression models algorithm in bacterial population dynamics modelling. Such a well-known algorithm, which provides simultaneous estimates of the parameters of c-regression models, together with a fuzzy partitioning of data, was used to determine bacterial growth curve given by the piecewise continuous function. The real as well as artificial data were used and promising results were obtained even for data with significant errors resulting from the measurement inaccuracy.

In this article image have been subject to segmentation using Matlab software, i.e. T1 in normal conditions, perfusion images and images after administering a contrast agent. The tumor in images made in normal conditions was difficult to identify. The images obtained after administering the contrast agent confirmed that the homogeneity criterion has been appropriately selected. In perfusion images the pixels of the background were added to the tumor. When the parameters were changed i.e. pixel counter or neighborhood type the method became more efficient; the tumor boundaries were outlined more precisely. The region growing method enables precise tumor detection; however, the selection of an appropriate homogeneity criterion is a prerequisite for correct segmentation.

Opis:
Diets high in saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) at the expense of n-3 PUFAs have been shown to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity and cancer. Animal fat is considered to be the major source of unhealthy saturated fats. However, beef fat has a high nutritional value owing to the presence of minerals, PUFAs, vitamins and selected protein fractions. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of fattening intensity on the fatty acid profile and mineral content of meat from Holstein-Friesian bulls. Holstein-Friesian bulls aged 11 to 19 months were fattened under semi-intensive (SI, 10 animals) and intensive (I, 10 animals) systems. The bulls were fed maize silage, rapeseed meal and premix ad libitum. The diets for group I animals were supplemented with 2.5 kg ground triticale provided in an automatic feeding station. Meat samples were collected from m. longissimus dorsi (MLD). The samples were mineralized and assayed for mineral content. Fat was extracted from each sample, and the fatty acid profile of beef was determined by gas chromatography. Dietary supplementation with ground triticale increased the average daily gains of bulls and carcass dressing percentage, and contributed to higher carcass conformation and fat cover scores. Beef was found to be a rich source of valuable mineral compounds. The meat of group I animals was characterized by higher potassium levels and lower sodium levels, which points to its higher nutritional value. Semi-intensive (SI) fattening increased PUFA concentrations and decreased the n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio in beef.

Opis:
This paper presents a new method for detection of changes in alignment of the human body, particularly the fall, on the basis of signals acquired from the position sensors placed on the body of the monitored person. The sensors are located on the cuffs, waist and chest. Transformation of data sequence collected from sensors is proposed in order to best distinguish between the collapse from the normal movement. It is based on nonlinear combination of the first two derivatives of the signals being read. Because data from the sensors is sent asynchronously, a numerical algorithm for unevenly sampled data differentiation is proposed. Derivative values are calculated in equidistant nodes through differentiation of a polynomial, which is adjusted by minimizing the mean square error. The developed method can be used in home care telemedicine systems, where it is necessary to long term monitor of multiple vital parameters of people under care.

Opis:
Cow’s milk has the highest share of total milk production and consumption in the world, including Poland. Milk is the most important source of readily available minerals, particularly calcium, in the human diet. The chemical composition of milk varies depending on genetic, environmental and physiological factors. Changes in the composition and physicochemical properties of milk affect its biological value and processing suitability. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of age of high-yielding Polish Holstein-Friesian (PHF) cows and lactation day on the calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) content of milk. The average milk yield increased significantly during three consecutive lactations. The age of cows had a significant effect on the average Ca and Mg content of milk throughout lactation. Milk from younger cows had higher concentrations of the analyzed macronutrients. The concentrations of Ca and Mg in milk varied considerably depending on the stage of lactation. A substantial decrease in the milk Ca content was noted in the first stage of lactation. The calcium concentration in milk stabilized in the second month post partum, and it remained stable until the end of lactation. A decrease in the Mg content was noted until day 30 of lactation in milk from primiparous cows and cows in their second lactation. The oldest cows produced milk with the lowest Mg concentration, which resulted from a steady decrease in the milk Mg content until the fourth month of lactation. The Mg content of milk continued to increase from the fourth month until the end of lactation, regardless of a cow’s age. The Ca and Mg content of milk from the analyzed high-yielding cows was below the normal ranges (by approximately 24% and 6%, respectively). This is the reason why dairy products are often fortified with minerals.

The paper presents an unsupervised approach to biomedical signal segmentation. The proposed segmentation process consists of several stages. In the first step, a state-space of the signal is reconstructed. In the next step, the dimension of the reconstructed state-space is reduced by projection into principal axes. The final step involves fuzzy clustering method. The clustering process is applied in the kernel-feature space. In the experimental part, the fetal heart rate (FHR) signal is used. The FHR baseline and the acceleration or deceleration patterns are the main signal nonstationarities but also the most clinically important signal features determined and interpreted in computer-aided analysis.

Beef has a high nutritional value owing to the presence of minerals, vitamins, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and selected protein fractions. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of calving and nursing on the fatty acid profile and the content of minerals and vitamins in the meat of crossbred (Limousine x Polish Holstein-Friesian) once-calved heifers in comparison with the meat of maiden heifers. At 15 months of age, once-calved heifers were inseminated with the semen of Limousine bulls. After calving and lactation, they were slaughtered. Meat samples were collected from m. longissimus dorsi (MLD). The fatty acid composition was determined with the use of a gas chromatograph. The content of 5 minerals (potassium, sodium, magnesium, zinc, iron) was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. The content of vitamins A and E was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. Gestation and nursing had a negligent effect on the content of functional components in the meat of oncecalved heifers, in comparison with the meat of heifers. The meat of heifers contained more vaccenic acid (TVA) (C 18:1 T10+11), arachidonic acid (AA) (C 20:4) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (C 22:6), whereas the meat of once-calved heifers was more abundant in oleic acid, zinc, iron and vitamin E (P ≤ 0.01). Commercially crossbred heifers can be included in once-bred heifer production systems, which create a possibility of producing additional offspring plus higher body weight of heifers with no adverse effect on the functional properties.
