The detection of gravitational waves from coalescing compact binaries would be a computationally intensive process if a single bank of template waveforms (i.e., a one step search) is used. We present, in this paper, an alternative method which is a hierarchical search strategy involving two template banks. We show that the computational power required by such a two step search, for an on-line detection of the one parameter family of Newtonian signals, is 1/8 of that required when an on-line one step search is used. This reduction is achieved when signals having a strength of ~8.8 times the noise r.m.s. value are required to be detected with a probability of ~0.95 while allowing for not more than one false event per year on the average. We present approximate formulae for the detection probability of a signal and the false alarm probability. Our numerical results are specific to the noise power spectral density expected for the initial LIGO.

Background. Medical emergencies can be distressing for any dental professional, whether in a dental practice, hospital or other sites. Objectives. To assess the knowledge and awareness of dental practitioners towards medical emergencies and its management in Bhubaneswar. Material and Methods. In this cross-sectional investigation, a self-administered questionnaire which included demographic details and 19 questions regarding knowledge about medical emergencies, was disseminated to a random sample of 183 dentists working in their private dental clinic set up in Bhubaneswar. Chi-square test was used for statistical analysis. Results. Total sample size was 183, out of which 79 (43.17%) were males and 104 (56.83%) were females. The mean age was found out to be 30.7 ± 5.38 years. Practically 96% of the practitioners were not certain enough to deal with the emergency conditions at dental office. Around 67% had not attended any workshop on emergency training. It was amazing to observe that larger part (90%) of the experts didn't possess first aid kit at their dental office. In instances of handling emergency situation at the dental chair no statistical significance (p>0.05) with respect to age and gender was found. Conclusion. This investigation showed that hypothetically dental professionals had better knowledge on medical emergencies yet at the same time they were not equipped efficiently to manage the same at their workplace.

Opis:
The electron transfer reaction of L-cysteine (RSH) with pyridinium chlorochromate (PCC) has been studied spectrophotometrically over the range 2.0 ≤ 10^3 [RSH] ≤ 6.0; 0.01 ≤ [H+] ≤ 0.2; 298 ≤ T ≤ 318 K and I = 0.3 mol dm-3 (NaClO4). The electron transfer reaction has also been carried out in the presence of anionic, cationic and neutral micelle. The reaction in acid medium is strongly catalyzed by changing [SDS]T (sodium dodecyl sulfate) up to 3 × 10-2 mol dm-3, beyond this concentration of SDS, the rate is retarded. The cationic and neutral micelle has a small effect on the rate. ΔH≠ (kJ mol-1) and ΔS≠ (JK-1 mol-1) values for the k1 and k2 paths are 30.20 ± 0.25, -159.65 ± 0.83 and 29.60 ± 0.62, -127.09 ± 2.17, respectively. The negative activation entropy is indicative of the ordered transition state for the electron transfer reaction. Formation of 2-amino-3-(2-amino-2-carboxy-ethyl) disulfanyl-propanoic acid as product is strongly supported by IR spectra.

Opis:
A dense bloom of Protoperidinium steinii was observed in the backwaters adjoining the western Bay of Bengal, Kalpakkam coast, which might be the first report for the world oceans. The brownish-red bloom appeared on 2 October 2019, and it was monitored on alternate days up to 14 October. Surface water temperature was about 27.5°C and salinity was <17 PSU during the bloom. Dissolved inorganic nutrients like nitrate, ammonia, silicate, and phosphate were extremely high compared to that of the coastal waters. The chlorophyll-a maxima (20.95 mg m−3) coincided with the highest Protoperidinium density (113.9 × 104 cells l −1). The contribution of P. steinii ranged from 17−93% of the total phytoplankton population. Since P. steinii is a heterotroph and voracious grazer, low autotroph density was observed during the bloom. No mass mortality of fish or other organisms was observed, thereby indicating the nontoxic nature of the bloom
