Opis:
Artykuł prezentuje nieznaną dotąd własnoręczną dedykację Marcina Lutra dla księcia pruskiego Albrechta von Brandenburg-Ansbach (Hohenzollerna) znajdującą się na karcie tytułowej egzemplarza druku antypapieskiego pt. Wider das Bapstum zu Rom vom Teuffel gestifft (Wittenberg 1545), przechowywanego w zbiorach starych druków Biblioteki Uniwersyteckiej w Toruniu pod sygnaturą Ob.6.II.2382. Jest to najprawdopodobniej pamiątka z ich ostatniego spotkania na zamku w Wittenberdze w grudniu 1545 r. W artykule omówiono treść publikacji i okoliczności wizyty Albrechta w tym mieście.
The article presents a so far unknown personal dedication of Martin Luther for Prussian Prince Albrecht von Brandenburg-Ansbach (Hohenzollern), on the title page of a copy of an anti-papal print titled Wider das Bapstum zu Rom vom Teuffel gestifft (Wittenberg, 1545), kept in the old-print collection of the University Library in Toruń (no. Ob.6.II.2382). This is probably a reminder of their last meeting at Wittenberg Castle in December 1545. The author discusses the content of the publication and the circumstances of Albrecht’s visit in that town.

Opis:
The article poses the question about the possibility to define the moment when the Reformation appeared in Prussia. In the literature of the subject matter it is hard to find one answer to thi question. The scholars most frequently give the year 1518 – the year when Jacob Knade of Gdańsk left the Order and got married. The author reminds the critical analysis by Paul Simson, who showed that the year 1518 resulted from the erroneous interpretation of the subsequent sources. The author poses the question to the narrative sources written in Gdańsk and Königsberg which resemble personal accounts – none of them recognizes the above mentioned event connected with Knade. Moreover, the accounts mention the Reformation for the first time in the years 1522–1523. Simon Grunau was the first to write about the Reformation in the spring of 1522. In the article the chronicle by Bernt Stegmann of 1528, the chronicle by Simon Grunau (1517–1530) and chronicles by the city’s notaries of the Old City of Königsberg Johann Beler (1519–1523) and Caspar Freiberg (ca. 1548) were used. The chroniclers reveal the chaos of the first years of the Reformation. They associate the beginnings of the Reformation in the cities with the speeches of Lutheran preachers. The accounts provided by Simon Grunau – travelling between Gdańsk and Königsberg – are the most comprehensive. Some Lutheran preachers are presented by him as people without a past, of unknown background. Others, such as Amandus and Speratus, are accused of Jewish origin and plotting against Christians. All of them – Stegmann, Grunau, Freiberg and Platner underline the threat brought about by the activity of the Lutheran preachers for the life and order in the city. Stegmann blames Jacob Hegge and Johann Franck for instigating to violence. Grunau, who analyzed the origin of the movement and ideas of Luther, considers Prussian uneducated supporters of Luther – Jacob Hegge and Johann Amandus – to be the most pernicious. Moderate preachers such as Alexander Sveniche, Johann Poliander and Michael Meurer – educated people respecting peace and rejecting blasphemy – were presented in the positive light. Such opinions are the evidence that the chroniclers (Grunau, Stegmann, Platner) saw the need to introduce certain reforms and do away with abuses in the Church.

Opis:
This article contains an analysis of the codicological context and circumstances surrounding the writing of the oldest city record of Chojnice. This volume is the most important source of information about the town’s medieval history. It is in the State Archive in Bydgoszcz in the section devoted to Documents of Chojnice under signature no. 33. The date of its writing has provoked controversy among scholars, as the date of 1436 was often misread as 1466. The author discusses and analyzes the structure of the volume, the phases of its production, and dates the paper on the basis of an analysis of the dating ofthe water marks. These water marks confirm that volume began to be kept in the 1430s and subsequent pages were sown in as the pages of the manuscript were filled up. It is a typical record of entries kept simultaneously by the council and the town court; it was kept through to the 1640s. The introductory section of the volume is unique. There the councilors present in minute detail the motives behind starting it. They call it a book of memory, one that aims to preserve a memory of official matters, court cases, and transactions entered into. The author also considers the circumstances that could have influenced the late establishment of the record – only in 1436 – and points out the self‑awareness of the members of the town council as guardians of the memory of the town’s history.

Opis:
This article places into a broader scope of the research over the image of Gdańsk and its inhabitants in chronicles that are carried out by the authoress. It deals with the analysis of the historiographical sources originating from beyond Gdańsk. The majority of chronicles’ excerpts dedicated to Gdańsk deals with its political and trade activity. The authoress is particularly interested in the criteria, put forward by the chroniclers from 15th to 16th c., which decided on Gdańsk’s urban character, or indicated its value as a city and made it worth a visit. It was a period of intense development of this centre. The purpose of the analyses is to, i.a., check whether the contemporary chroniclers observed these changes and how they evaluated them. The issue has not yet been addressed in the literature of the subject. The analyses, referring to Hans Werner-Goetz’s methodology concerning the representations in chronicles (so-called Vorstellungsgeschichte), were carried out on various chronicles, relations and records, i.a. travel records (Gilbert de Lannoy and Mikołaj Wimann), Polish chronicles (Annales by Jan Długosz, chronicles by Bernard Wapowski, Joachim Bielski, Polonia by Marcin Kromer), foreign chronicles Germania by Eneas Silvius Piccolomini, Wandalia by Albert Krantz), or universal chronicles (Cosmographia by Sebastian Münster). The analysis shows that in the first half of the 15th century the contemporaneous authors did not stand out of other towns in the region (Jan Długosz, Gilbert de Lannoy, Eneas Silvius Piccolomini). Their assessment was made while they pondered on the city’s fortifications, geographical location and building material. It was not until the Thirteen Years War (1454–1466) and subsequent expansion of the city that the chronicles of the 16th c. noticed the ongoing change (especially Albrecht Krantz and Sebastian Münster). They described the “civilizational leap” that took place in Gdańsk in short time, namely during the life of one man. In their opinion, the changes were particularly noticeable in the fast pace of replacing wooden buildings with brick ones. The image of Gdańsk in the foreign chronicles does not contain elements of the descriptions of the city characteristic of Gdańsk records, which the authoress analyzed elsewhere – there are no references to specific buildings, streets and squares, that is, the living space of the city’s inhabitants.
