Opis:: The author presents one of the best preserved landscape units in our country, namely the one coming from the 17th century at Kalwaria Zebrzydowtska, Cracow District. As regards its style, it represents Mannerism. The main part of the complex covering an area of 300 hectares it the so-called Kalwaria, designed as a reproduction of Jerusalem Calvary and comprising buildings in Mannerism style with early Baroque elements. The landscape park is now endangered by unisupervised management of the area which is expressed in it'he building of living quarters and farm buildings in its vicinty, in unsystematic planting of trees and so on. The author suggests to establish there a recreation complex which could be used by inhabitants of near- by Cracow, which should create chances for keeping and preserving monumental values. Consequently, she postulates a number of changes concerning both the town of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska and its surroundings. They tend towards preservation of the area’s nature and establishment of a tourist centre there and, above all, towards arrangement of the whole architectural setting.

Opis:: The idea of the seminar on „The Protection of Nature and the Protection of Historic Monuments — a Conflict or Cooperation?” has been based on the concept of the architecture of landscape in the understanding of the deepest sense of this notion. Let us remind at this point that a leitmotive of the idea is a joint consideration of landscape spatial forms created from the substance in the colloquial rendering of their contrasting properties, i.e. from natural and cultural substances. The landscape described as a physionomy of the space can assume extreme forms: a cultural one in the urban landscape and a natural one in the natural landscape. There may also appear intermediate types when natural and cultural elements occur together at the same time and at different proportions. This understanding of the landscape finds its reflection in practical doings of conservation services in two different branches: the preservation of nature and the preservation of the cultural property. More and more often the protection of nature goes beyond the framework of natural reserves and covers such great areas as landscape parks or areas of protected landscape. The protection of monuments covers now not only individual buildings but also spatial structures associated with them and with their urban or rural values. As a result of this, conservation theory evolves clearly to create integrated systems covering large territories that are protected to a different degree. Unfortunately, the existing official and organisational systems in the two above-mentioned conservation branches are far behind the factual needs. The administrative division, mutual isolation of the two branches without any grounds for understanding have brought in conservation practice to the condition where a harmonous cooperation of the two conservation services is found rather rarely. Definite measures quite often result in sharp conflicts. Still, as a rule, there are no contacts and it is even not realized that in some respects problems of the protection of nature and the protection of monuments are interlinked. This situation can be found at all levels of management and administration starting from ministries through voivodship authorities down to the lowest level of communes. Such a division has resulted in differences in terminology, which makes the understanding between the two branches still more difficult. In this context, the object of the seminar was, on the one part, a broad discussion on problems of territorial relations between the protection of nature and the protection of monuments of culture. On the other hand, organisers of the seminar expected proposals for such changes in the organisation of official structures which would in fact become interlinked and would result in the merger of actions undertaken by two separate branches, i.e. the Ministry of Forestry and Timber Industry and the Ministry of Culture and Arts. The system of the protection of natural resources should be manifested in the following fields: 1. the sphere of land development as a branch integrating the two scopes of conservation protection 2. the sphere of the execution of plans of land development and programmes of conservation protection 3. the legislative and origanisational sphere covering the above two zones, and 4. the sphere of the education and upbringing of the society as well as its encounter with natural environment and cultural property.
