    The Decline of Experience? Pastoral Fears of (Neo)Pragmatism The article aims at describing and analyzing some of the contemporary dilemmas of American neopragmatist philosophy. It would appear that Richard Rorty’s conclusions concerning the conceptual framework of world-description as rooted solely in the multiplicity of contingent paradigms of vocabularies forces into the background an important aspect of the preceding pragmatist tradition: the sensory experience. Using the example of two prominent landscape artists, Nancy Holt and Ana Mendieta, as the point of departure, the article illustrates the attempts of the neopragmatist thought to revive those elements of John Dewey’s aesthetic philosophy that bear direct relevance to contemporary ecocriticism. In this context, John Shusterman’s writings may parallel the pastoral element of eco-philosophy, providing a refreshing perspective on concepts of the environment and the non-human.

    Celem artykułu jest rozważenie miejsca studiów tłumaczeniowych pośród innych narracji badawczych sięgających po retorykę globalnego kryzysu środowiskowego. Na tle ich dokonań dziedzina zajmująca się wzajemnymi relacjami języków oraz literatur wydawać się może zbyt antropocentryczna, stąd konieczne jest przeformułowanie jej podejścia na potrzeby nowego, politycznie zaangażowanego sposobu rozumienia komunikacji międzykulturowej i intersemiotycznej. Punkt wyjścia artykułu stanowią idee translacyjnej ekologii Michaela Cronina, opracowane w oparcio refleksję antropocenu oraz rozważania ekolingwistyczne. Głównym zamierzeniem autorki jest stworzenie nowego języka wartości, odmiennego od systemu wartościowania kapitałocenu. W konkluzji przedstawione są wskazania dla praktyki eko‑przekładu, możliwe do zastosowania zarówno w analizie istniejących tłumaczeń, jak i w formie translatorskich interwencji.
    The article considers the place of translation studies among other scholarly narratives which are eager to employ the rhetoric of the global environmental crisis. Against the background of its achievements, the field of languages and literature may seem to be too anthropocentric; hence it is necessary to reformulate its approach for the sake of the current, politically engaged way of construing cross-cultural and intersemiotic communication. The article builds upon Michael Cronin’s translation ecology and elaborates further on Anthropocene thinking and ecolinguistic considerations. The author intends to establish a new language of values that would differ from capitalism’s value system. The conclusion presents recommendations for the practice of eco‑translation that could be followed both in the examination of existing translations and in the form of translation interventions.

On the Limits and Paradoxes of Secular Criticism Abstract: Even though it is difficult to imagine a phenomenon more closely intertwined with the processes of colonization and decolonization than secularism, there are scant references to it in the postcolonial writing and accompanying critical theory. The critics’ reticence seems hardly justifiable considering the fact that secularization processes have been in the centre of the hottest political and ideological debate for more than a decade now, while their critical 170 examination and evaluation appears inevitable due to the ongoing process of undermining the historical view of the religious vs secular divide by alternative ways of ordering the public space in non-Western societies, especially as the latter have also become, on the immigrants’ arrival and vocal presence, a powerful factor in the political game played out within Western countries. As the violent course of events after 9/11 has prompted most of the postcolonial critics to perceive Western democracy and secularism in the black-and-white mode by inscribing it in the Eurocentric and colonial framework, the secular-religious opposition has become one of the postcolonial studies’ fundamental dichotomies that it seeks to transgress and overcome, even though the attempt may well be in vain. Consequently, the term “postsecular,” despite all the subtlety with which it was introduced into the fields of philosophy, theology, sociology and literature, has come to indicate a posture of critical aversion to the secularist order as quintessential for the Western modernity and Enlightenment project and opting for the radical division between the public reason and the need for faith. The aim of the article is thus to examine the meanings ascribed to the terms such as “postsecularism” and “postsecular spirituality” in postcolonial theory, as well as to evaluate the attempts at their application to the field of literary studies. Określenie „postsekularny” natomiast, mimo wszystkich subtelności, jakie towarzyszyły wprowadzaniu tego terminu w obszarze filozofii, teologii, socjologii i literatury, dla wielu rzeczników postkolonializmu zaczęło po prostu sygnalizować postawę krytycznej niechęci wobec sekularystycznego porządku, uznanego za kwintesencję zachodniej nowoczesności i programu Oświecenia, a opowiadającego się za dokonaniem gwałtownego cięcia pomiędzy publicznym rozumem i potrzebą wiary.     Alina Mitek-Dziemba ORCID: 0000-0002-6900-3387 Uniwersytet Śląski w KatowicachWydział Filologiczny Abstract Hunting and ReligionOn the Religious Significance of Hunting Practices from the Perspective of Animal Studies The main aim of the article is to consider the presence and function of religion (in most cases, the Christian religion) in the broadly conceived hunting practices at the turn of the 21st century, as well as the presence of religious motivation and ideological commitment in the hunters’ community from the perspective of religious studies inspired by the empirical research into the human-animal relationship (known as animal studies). The hunting narrative is shown, on the one hand, as eagerly seeking legitimacy and support from institutional religion (evidenced by the patron saints of hunting, the hunting ceremonial that has close parallels in the church ceremonial, and the argument in favour of “ecological balance” and “nature management” based on theological sources) and, on the other hand, as disguising an unethical and religiously unacceptable element of the arbitrary taking of life and inflicting pain without a shadow of empathy or without respecting the right to existence of what is a vulnerable being, even more so because it is devoid of human tools and rationality. The author’s examination of the issues leads to the discussion of the hunters’ religious mythologizing of their own status which draws on the ancient origin of hunting practices in prehistoric times: a period when the human-animal relationship was not yet marked by dualistic division and ontological asymmetry. The paper ultimately aims at the analysis of the way hunting is presented in religious studies research, of the difference between the implications of hunting activities for the human-animal relationship in premodern tribal communities (which practised subsistence hunting) and contemporary industrialized ones, and of the possibility of granting religious subjecthood to animals which stems from the return to the non-dichotomous, relational and dynamic view of the world typical of hunter-gatherers’ times.     Celem artykułu jest próba wypracowania teoretycznych podstaw dla ekoglottodydaktyki (w obszarze nauczania języka angielskiego), których poszukuje się we wczesnych manifestacjach ruchu środowiskowego, a także próba przedstawienia głównych założeń krytyki ekologicznej jako podstawowego punktu odniesienia praktyki edukacyjnej, która ma na celu rozwój świadomości ekologicznej uczniów w dobie kryzysu klimatycznego. W drugiej części tekstu poddano analizie treści środowiskowe w polskich podręcznikach szkolnych do nauki języka obcego (angielskiego) na wyższych poziomach zaawansowania. Decyzje autorów tych podręczników w zakresie prezentacji tematów związanych z ekologią i ze zmianą klimatu są tu badane pod kątem uwzględnienia postulatów ekokrytyki i możliwości wspierania postaw aktywistycznych oraz emancypacyjnych. Ma to służyć wskazaniu najlepszych metod i dróg realizacji krytycznej pedagogiki ekologicznej na miarę wyzwań antropocenu.
    The article is aimed at providing the theoretical background for the foreign language (ESL) environmental education, which is sought in the early manifestations of the environmental movement, as well as presenting the main assumptions of ecological criticism as a benchmark for the educational practice whose major objective is to instil environmental awareness in students at the time of the climate crisis. The second part of the paper includes an analysis of environmental contents in Polish schoolbooks used in the ESL classroom at intermediate and advanced levels. The authors’ decisions regarding the presentation of ecological topics and climate change issues are then investigated in terms of its compliance with ecocritical claims and its support of activist and emancipatory attitudes. The analysis seeks to indicate the best methods and ways of pursuing critical environmental pedagogy which would be able to rise to the challenges of the Anthropocene.

    Alina Mitek-Dziemba ORCID: 0000-0002-6900-3387 Katedra Literatury PorównawczejUniwersytet Śląski Abstract God-Human, God-AnimalThe Animal Faces of Religion The aim of this short article is to discuss the state of research in a field which attempts to combine animal studies with theology and religious studies, and to map its discourse, tentatively called “critical ecotheology” and construed as environmental ethics accompanied by a religious inspiration and theological justification which is derived from dogmas and religious attitudes of different world religions. The attempt at providing a theoretical framework for ecotheology was inspired by the pioneering work of scholars who came in September 2014 to Bonn, Germany, for a conference on human-animal relations in religious traditions. The problems brought up by their presentations provoked a discussion of the presence of animals in the thinking, practices, and rituals of various religions and their theologies, highlighting the role of religious culture in negotiating different senses of the animal. The article concludes with the idea that a review of religious and theological issues from the perspective of animal studies may lead to the revision of many concepts and theoretical paradigms within the history and anthropology of religion, while helping to articulate the significance of animals and the need for their protection in the activity of religious groups and individuals.     Choć kwestia zwierzęcej śmierci i umierania od dawna zwraca uwagę badaczy z kręgu animal studies, coraz częstsze jej pojawianie się w obszarze studiów religioznawczych jest zjawiskiem interesującym i stosunkowo nowym, które domaga się rozważenia. W badaniach ogniskujących się na religii coraz więcej uwagi poświęca się ostatnio nie tyle rozmaitym znaczeniom, jakie przypisywane są obecności zwierząt w ludzkim doświadczeniu religijnym (gdzie figurują one jako przedmioty, symbole i ciała), ile bardziej kontrowersyjnej kwestii samych zwierzęcych reakcji na śmierć istot im bliskich. Zdaniem niektórych badaczy, ta ostatnia może być także rozpatrywana jako rytualna i protoreligijna, co daje szansę na rewizję antropocentrycznego ujęcia religii jako fenomenu czysto kognitywnego. Sposoby przeżywania śmierci przez wyższe zwierzęta (jak dokumentuje to etologia), w dużej mierze zbiorowe i ceremonialne, podkreślające cielesną kruchość (vulnerability) i potrzebę wyrażenia żalu w rytuałach żałoby, wydają się bliskie ludzkiemu rozumieniu religijności jako szeregu społecznych zachowań, które stanowią odpowiedź na doświadczenie cierpienia, utraty i tajemnicy otaczającej czyjeś odejście. W tym kontekście istotne więc wydaje się zadanie pytania, dlaczego wszelka próba określenia zwierzęcych zachowań mianem religijnych budzi – wśród większości ludzi deklarujących swoją przynależność do wiary – niemal instynktowne negatywne reakcje. Jakie procesy semiotyczne, filozoficzne i polityczne przyczynić się mogły do uznania, że religia to obszar czysto ludzki, a co więcej, definiowany przez pryzmat różnicy ludzko-zwierzęcej? Czy istnieje coś, co Derrida nazwałby trwałą ofiarniczą strukturą zachodniego myślenia (gdzie pojęcie ofiary oznaczałoby nie tylko powszechną zgodę na przemoc wobec zwierząt, usankcjonowanie faktu ich śmierci na potrzeby człowieka, ale także zamknięcie przed zwierzętami możliwości udziału w tym, co religijne w charakterze innym niż przedmiot ofiary)? Artykuł podejmuje te kwestie, argumentując na rzecz zwierzęcej religijności, opierając się na nieantropocentrycznym ujęciu żałoby w pracach Judith Butler oraz analizując literackie i artystyczne strategie przedstawiania śmierci zwierząt, które poprzez swoje akcentowanie wymiaru religijnego zyskują emancypacyjny charakter, w utworach D.H. Lawrence’a oraz Iana McEwana.

    Alina Mitek‑DziembaUniwersytet Śląski w KatowicachWydział FilologicznyAbstractHoly Animality: Tatiana Goricheva’s Contribution to Orthodox Ecotheology (introduction and commentary) The aim of the publication is to acquaint the Polish reader with a fragment of the most famous book by Tatiana M. Goricheva, Holy Animals (published in Saint Petersburg in 1993), which has not been translated into Polish so far. The author of the book is one of the few Russian speaking thinkers deal¬ing both with Orthodox Christianity and the question of animal rights. The attached commentary offers an introduction to her philosophy, which is here presented at the broad background of Eastern Orthodox thinking. In contradistinction to Western theology, it is the tradition that discusses the Christian idea of redemption in cosmic terms and points to the possibility of religious identification and sanctification of animals. Therefore, it seems that the Eastern Orthodox interpretation of the Christian doctrine provides a different perspective on the situation of animals and their suffering in the contemporary world and may lead to action to secure their status as individual subjects.Keywords: Orthodox Christianity, ecotheology, animality, animal rights, subjecthood
