Opis:
A new concept of cooperation between units interested in optimization of anticorrosion protection in brown coal mines is presented. It includes contribution of paint producer and scientific units testing new anticorrosive solutions. Individualized approach to design of anticorrosion measures enables fast testing and introduction of new solutions. Moreover, it makes possible to control application conditions by paint producer to ensure high quality coatings. The methods of selection and testing of new paint systems using impedance spectroscopy is presented. Examples of degradation impacts from vibration, wearing and aggressive chloride-containing waters are discussed.

Opis:
Micro-bearings have many applications in computer devices, such as CPU fans or hard disc drives. So far, rolling bearings and slide bearings have been used, for example micro-bearing with smooth Journal and sleeve surface, which is known as FDB - Fluid Dynamic Bearing. Actually, latter versions of micro-bearings are being launched to the market: Ex-FDB - Extra Fluid Dynamic Bearing. This type of bearings was fabricated by putting some micro-grooves filled with oil on its interna! surfaces. Ex-FDB's are characterized by reduced level of generated noise and guarantee long failure-free fan life, reaching 120 000 hours. In this paper we present our numerical calculations of the friction force and the friction coefficient in the parabolic micro-bearing. Micro-bearing gap height is very low, often less then l micrometer, therefore capillarity and adhesion forces cause an increase of oil viscosity near the Journal and sleeve surfaces. Due to this fact a value of hydrodynamic pressure in micro-bearing gap also increases, what results in observed changes of capacity, friction forces and friction coefficient values. The influence of adhesion and capillarity on friction force and friction coefficient of oil in micro-bearing hasn't been considered from analytical point of view so far. This paper presents numerical results of computed values of friction forces and friction coefficient for parabolic micro-bearing in comparison to values for classical parabolic bearing.

Opis:
In this work, the effect of heat transfer during explosive welding (EXW) and post-processing annealing on the microstructural and chemical composition changes have been thoroughly analysed using scanning and transmission electron microscopies and X-ray synchrotron radiation. Several combination of explosively welded metal compositions were studied: Ti with Al, Cu with Al, Ta or stainless steel, stainless steel with Zr or Ta and Ti with carbon steel. It was found that the melted metals exhibit a strong tendency to form brittle crystalline, nano-grained or even amorphous phases during the solidification. For all analysed metal combinations most of the phases formed in the zones of solidified melt do not appear in the equilibrium phase diagrams. Concurrently, the interfacial layers undergo severe plastic deformation forming nano-grained structures. It has been established that these heavily deformed areas can undergo dynamic recovery and recrystallization already during clad processing. This leads to the formation of new stress-free grains near the interface. In the case of low temperature and short time post processing annealing only the melted zones and severely deformed layers undergo recovery and recrystallization. However, drastic changes in the microstructure occurs at higher temperature and for longer annealing times. Applying such conditions leads to diffusion dominant processes across the interface. As a consequence continuous layers of intermetallic phases of equilibrium composition are obtained.

Opis:
Particle radiotherapy such as the one using proton beams, provides a successful treatment approach in many cancer types. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which proton irradiation induces cell death, particularly in a human peripheral blood lymphocyte model has not been examined in detail. Comparative studies of the biological effects, such as cell death, of particle therapy versus conventional X-rays treatment are of utmost importance. Here, we compared the viability of human peripheral blood lymphocyte following in vitro irradiation with protons (therapeutic 60 MeV proton beam) and photon beam (250 kV, X-rays), by applying separate doses within the range of 0.3-4.0 Gy. Cell viability was assessed 1 and 4 h after irradiation with protons and X-rays by the FITC-Annexin V labelling procedure (Apoptotic & Necrotic & Healthy Cells Quantification Kit, Biotium). Results showed that irradiation with both radiation types reduced the number of viable cells in a dose-dependent manner, as assessed as a function of the duration of post-irradiation time. Protons proved more fatal to the cells treated than X-ray photons. This demonstrates a difference in cell viability after irradiation with protons and photons in a human peripheral blood lymphocyte model.

Opis:
While studying the influence of ionizing radiation or certain chemical agents on cells, it is crucial to not only determine cytotoxicity, but also to follow cell death mechanisms. There are different methods to screen processes of cell death and still very important question remains unanswered about differences in results that could be caused by various experimental steps in procedures. Based on literature review two protocols of cell death determination were compared. First protocol regarded collecting cells floating in medium before trypsinization and following centrifugation of them. In the second protocol floating cells were discarded and attached ones were stained and fixed. In all experiments three different untreated cell lines (A172, DU145 as cancer cell lines and in comparison, fibroblasts (FB CCL 110), as a non- cancerous cell line) were used to test applied protocols. Cells were cultured and death processes were examined at different time points up to 120 h. Compared protocols showed statistically significant differences, especially in terms of necrosis, which was higher when included floating cells from culture medium and then centrifuging them. Therefore, presented results show importance of choosing a valid experimental procedure in case of evaluating cells viability and types of cell death pathways quantitatively.

Opis:
Introduction: So far, very little data on pediatric obesity has been published in Poland, although the problem seems to be growing. Objective: To investigate present prevalence of overweight and obesity among schoolchildren using CDC (Center of Disease Control and Prevention) criteria in Krakow and to compare how it has changed between the years 2001 and 2013. Our aim was to establish the magnitude of this rising problem within the last decade.Materials and methods: The study was conducted in two phases. In 2001, height and weight of the group of schoolchildren were obtained. Twelve years later, children in the same age, attending the same schools, were measured and weighed. Using the collected data, BMI (kg/m2) was calculated in order to acquire BMI percentile. BMI cutoffs referential for Polish population were used. Results: Using the CDC criteria to diagnose children as obese or overweight, the authors determined that the prevalence of overweight, including obesity was 10.8% in 2001 and changed to 15.1% in 2013 (p=0.0054). The percentage of obese children increased from 2.0% to 4.8% (p=0.0012). The occurrence of overweight and obesity has increased among girls (p=0.0025; p=0.0112 respectively) while among the group of boys, it did not change. The factors associated with excess weight were: male sex (OR=1.48; 95%CI=1.13-1.95) and second phase of the study (OR= 1.48; 95%CI=1.13-1.95).Conclusion: Our study indicated that the prevalence of obesity and overweight among adolescents in Krakow rose within the last decade. The rising problem affected females more than males. Despite that, excess weight is still more frequent among males than females.
