Opis:
The article discusses an issue of intertextuality of “pictures” in Palaeolithic art, and colour as its constituent. An important concept in these regards appeared to be that of an open and interdisciplinary approach towards an image, derived from the anthropology of images. In my opinion, essential is an “acting” of an image, based on so called “interimaginal relations”. It is legitimate when referring to prehistory, as numerous images reveal interpenetrating traces of other representations. Either consciously or unconsciously, some solutions had been used repeatedly, copying other representations, including selection of colours as a kind of stereotype deeply rooted in cultural memory. In cave “pictures” there were one or two main colours used, rarely three or even four. It has been acknowledged that the most important features of Palaeolithic “pictures” were movement, colour, especially expressed by a contrast of black and red or yellow, and also an illusion. They were also interrelated with a sound. The world of colours of contemporary people was a significant constituent of cultural meanings and of images “acting” in “mediatisation” of important existential contents between past and present.

Opis:
January 4, 2020 was the 30th anniversary of the death of Professor Jan Żak, who died prematurely at the age of 67. His work and scientific activities were known and appreciated in  various countries and during difficult times when he was professionally involved in archeology. The biography of Professor Jan Żak resulted largely from the spirit of the times in which he lived, but also from his open, curious personality. He touched the warfare, and his professional life took place in the realities of the People's Republic of Poland; he also witnessed its dramatic end. The aim of this article is not only to recall the methodological and theoretical foundations of J. Żak's scientific work, but also to try to answer the question about the contemporary methodology of archeology, practiced by the Professor's students and subsequent generations.

Opis:
On March 23rd, 2023 the 100th anniversary of Professor Jan Żak’s birth was marked with an exhibition and a seminar meant to present the modern archeology he had been creating. In addition to Professor’s scientific achievements, there were fragments presented of three documentaries to illustrate his involvement into popularization of archeology. The article discusses also Professor’s work and scientific activities in the field of early medieval archeology, methodology of archaeology and general prehistory, widely recognized and appreciated not only in Poland but also abroad. In 1945 Jan Żak took part in the military operations of the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division, and his professional life took place in the realities of the People’s Republic of Poland. Particularly important were his organizational achievements as well as scientific contacts with researchers from Western Europe. The article also presents the direction of contemporary archeology methodology established by J. Żak, continued by his students and subsequent generations or archaeologists.

This paper provides an overview of the scholarly thought of Leo Klejn (born 1.07.1927), a prominent Russian scholar. The discussion is based on Klejn’s selected works, first of all his monumental work ‘Трудно быть Клейном. Автобиография в монологах и диалогах’, translated into Polish as ‘Trudno być Klejnem. Autobiografia w monologach i dialogach’, Sankt Petersburg, 2010, pp 600. This paper looks at Klejn’s life, his lot, often dramatic, but most of all his creative and outstanding works in the field of archaeology, anthropology and philology within their historical contexts. It also examines the reasons behind addressing certain issues.

Opis:
The article is devoted to considerations regarding the idea of „new aesthetics” and its importance for archeology, especially prehistoric archeology. The current scientific reality as exceeding current paradigms and expanding research fields is diagnosed. This process also applies to the borders of art, which until recently seemed to be established, fixed and guaranteeing its clear separation from other spheres of life. The article shows aesthetics as noting this process and subject to change. This complicated current situation has created the idea of „new aesthetics”, entering new areas that previously did not belong to art or aesthetics. Similarly, the methods of analyzing these phenomena do not have a predetermined status. This gives new opportunities, especially when you notice the manifestations of universal aesthetics. They also relate to prehistoric archeology, giving it the opportunity to participate in the discourse proposed by „new aesthetics.”

Opis:
The article attempts to present and evaluate the role and achievements of the Department of History and Methodology of Prehistory at the Institute of Prehistory at Adam Mickiewicz University, in terms of a reflection on theory and methodology of archaeology, developed in the framework of the Department, and pioneered by Professor Jan Żak. The first part presents an overview of the theoretical reflection and the range of issues undertaken by Professor Żak, while the second, by the employees of the Department of History and Methodology of Prehistory after Professor’s death. What all of these share is an attempt to find answers to questions about what is a “theory” in archaeology, what is its relationship with the practice of the discipline, the humanities and the intellectual world in general, as well as the role it played in the development of Polish archaeology in the past few decades.

The article discusses the history of archaeology at the University of Poznań since its establishing (31st January 1919) to the present day. It explains what boosted its development, and points at difficult periods in its history. More concern has been devoted to the origins of archaeology at the University, and especially to Józef Kostrzewski, an outstanding archaeologist who created a vision of archaeology in Poznań and influenced its development for years, a researcher who established his own school of archaeology. In the article the way has been shown leading to the creation of the Institute of Prehistory (in 1982) and Jan Żak’s concerns in this regard. Less attention has been paid to the modern history of archaeology as it has been discussed in other articles in this volume.

Bearing in mind the vastness of issues, only two major research questions shall be addressed: cultural taxonomy (mainly in respect to the Lusatian culture) as well as and the chronology and periodisation of the abovementioned prehistory period in the general historical and methodological contexts.

The reason for this article was the 90th birthday of Professor Stanisław Tabaczyński (born on April 1, 1930). However, at the last stage of editorial work, the sad news of his death reached us (November 28, 2020). All the more we would like to commemorate the Professor, recalling his achievements and merits, which place him among the most outstanding Polish archaeologists, including actual members of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He made a great contribution to the development of Polish and world archaeology in the area of theoretical and field archaeological research. Many of his scientific initiatives concerned the theory and anthropology of culture as well as the methodology of archaeological research and the syntheses of prehistory and the early Middle Ages. His achievements and influence on shaping the minds of archaeologists of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century cannot be overestimated.
