Opis:
Adding humic acid to soil can improve soil structure and fertility, which can lead to better plant growth and higher crop yields. Extracting humic acid from compost is a sustainable and environmentally friendly way to obtain a valuable organic material. Humic acid (HA) can be extracted from compost relatively easily and at a low cost, making it an attractive option for farmers. In this study, we investigated the use of sugarcane bagasse (SB) and immature horse manure (IHM) as bulking agents for the composting of separated municipal solid waste (SMSW) and the extraction and characterization of humic acid from the mature composts produced. Fertilizing solutions containing different concentrations of humic acid were prepared and used to evaluate their effects on turnip crop growth and various biochemical parameters during cultivation. The results showed that the humic acid extracted from the composts had high yields and were rich in elemental carbon. The application of humic acid at both low and high concentrations resulted in a significant improvement in all the parameters measured except for the total protein in the roots, which did not differ significantly between the humic acid concentrations. The yield, root diameter and fresh weight increased significantly, and the leaf area was proportional to the humic acid concentration of the solution used. The highest increase in chlorophyll a content was observed in the treatment of humic acid extracted from composts C2 and C3 at a concentration of 0.1 gL-1, with an increase of 31% and 37%, respectively, compared to the control. The use of humic acid provided by co-compost can be considered a successful management strategy for degraded sandy soils and sustainable agriculture production in sandy poor soils worldwide.

Composting is commonly used for waste management and the evaluation of its quality is important for successful application. Seed germination test is commonly adopted due to its capacity to examine the toxicity level of compost. The seed test is usually evaluated on the final product and the results can vary with the different methods and the type of seed utilized. In this study, the evolution of seed germination tests during the composting process of municipal waste (MSW) mixed with poultry manure (PM) of two species tomato and sugar beet was examined. The impact of compost water extracts on seed germination and plant primary root growth for each sampling was reported. The chemical parametrs were evaluated on the final product. Results show that mixture C1 with a higher amount of municipal waste gave less compost yield than mixture C2. After 35 days of composting, the compost was phytotoxic for tomato and sugar beet seeds. The seeds of the two cultures reacted differently to the same compost. The compost could stimulate sugar beet germination at days 110, 140, 180, 212 and 252. Seed germination of sugar beet was increased and delayed by one day by the compost stabilized and mature as compared with the control.

Objectives To evaluate prenatal exposure to radiofrequency radiation (RFR) from telecommunication using a mobile phone questionnaire, operator data logs of mobile phone use and a personal exposure meter (PEM). Material and Methods The study included 1228 mother–infants pairs from the Mothers and Children’s Environmental Health (MOCEH) study – a multicenter prospective cohort study ongoing since 2006, in which participants were enrolled at ≤ 20 weeks of pregnancy, with a follow-up of a child birth and growth to assess the association between prenatal environmental exposure and children’s health. The questionnaire included the average calling frequency per day and the average calling time per day. An EME Spy 100 PEM was used to measure RFR among 269 pregnant women from November 2007 to August 2010. The operators’ log data were obtained from 21 participants. The Spearman’s correlation test was performed to evaluate correlation coefficient and 95% confidence intervals between the mobile phone use information from the questionnaire, operators’ log data, and data recorded by the PEM. Results The operators’ log data and information from the self-reported questionnaire showed significantly high correlations in the average calling frequency per day (ρ = 0.6, p = 0.004) and average calling time per day (ρ = 0.5, p = 0.02). The correlation between information on the mobile phone use in the self-reported questionnaire and exposure index recorded by the PEM was poor. But correlation between the information of the operators’ log data and exposure index for transmission of mobile communication was significantly high: correlation coefficient (p-value) was 0.44 (0.07) for calling frequency per day, and it was 0.49 (0.04) for calling time per day. Conclusions The questionnaire information on the mobile phone use showed moderate to high quality. Using multiple methods for exposure assessment might be better than using only one method. Water deficit is one of the major environmental issues affecting biodiversity. Drought-related works are conducted to explore the mechanisms involved in drought vulnerability or resistance and to adopt the most advantageous tool to monitor these changes. Field spectroscopy, an accessory tool of remote sensing, evaluates the reflectance to collect continuous spectrum from materials. In the conducted study, the potential of using UV-Near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy as a non-destructive and reliable approach in monitoring of drought effects on three Medicinal and Aromatic Plants species (MAPs): Lavandula stoechas, Cistus laurifolius and Pistacia lentiscus from Northern Morocco during dry (July 2021) and wet (March 2022) period was addressed. It was found that Lavandula stoechas species is more impacted by water deficit than Cistus laurifolius and Pistacia lentiscus. Indeed, this species has a lower reflectance in Visible and NIR regions of the spectrum after a period of drought and therefore a higher vulnerability to water deficit than the other two species.

Opis:
Olive mill wastewaters represent a severe environmental problem, especially in Mediterranean countries. Indeed, the treatment and recovery processes developed so far remain very limited and their cost is very high. However, treatment by shallow evaporation ponds in the open air remains, until now, the most used technique despite the efforts made. The volume and characteristics of this liquid effluent depend, among other things, on the nature of the extraction process used. In this context, this work aims to evaluate the effect of the mode of trituration and storage in the evaporation ponds on the quality of olive oil mill wastewaters. These effluents were collected from three olive mills located in two different provinces in Northern Morocco during the 2021–2022 olive growing season. The sampling has considered different points according to different steps of the process. The analytical work corresponded to the measurement of in-situ parameters (Temperature (T°), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Electrical Conductivity (EC) and pH degree (pH)) and other laboratory analysis (Suspension Matter (SM), Dry Matter (DM), Fatty Matter (FM), biochemical (BOD5) and chemical (COD)demands in oxygen). Results showed a high degree of environmental degradation. Indeed, these effluents are characterized, on average, by elevated concentrations of biological and chemical oxygen demands and suspended solids reaching up to 0.43 g/L ± 0.87, 1.69 g/L ±0.71 and 30.78 g/L ±25.1, respectively. This study also showed, except for two-phase olive mill BNANDA, a slightly alkaline nature of the vegetable waters (7.81<pH<8.52), as opposed to what was reported in the literature, and high levels in fat content (4.73 g/L ±3.85). Moreover, the estimated volume of vegetable water released in the study area during the 2019/2020 olive growing season (350×103 m3) is very high considering its equivalence to domestic water. Normalized Principal Component Analysis (ACPN) and Hierarchical Principal Component Classification (HCPC) indicate that differences in the composition of this wastewater were more pronounced between the extraction processes than by the origins of the vegetable waters (fresh or stored in the natural evaporation pond).

Background. Periprosthetic distal femur fractures following total knee arthroplasty (PDFFTKA) are increasingly common [1], mainly in elderly patients with significant co-morbidities [2]. Surgical management usually requires balancing prompt fixation for early mobilization with the need to consider the least physiologically demanding option [3].The aim of this study was to assess predictors of clinical and radiological outcome in patients with PDFFTKA treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). Materials and methods. A retrospective cohort study of patients managed for PDFFTKA over the last 21 years in the Trauma & Orthopaedics Department of the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) was carried out. Radiological images, pre- and post-operatively, were assessed for fracture related parameters. Last known functional status was evaluated using the most recent outpatient review letters. After assessment of normality of data, evaluation of predictors of clinical and radiological outcome was made using correlation analyses. Results. There was no statistically significant correlation between age, primary TKA to fracture interval, and length of intact medial cortex vs clinical outcome for the parametric variables evaluated. For non-parametric variables assessed, there was a statistically significant correlation between clinical outcome and evidence of callus formation (Spearman rho value -0.476; p=0.022). In stratifying the patients with ‘poor’ and ‘good’ outcome, there was no difference noted in primary TKA to fracture interval, or length of intact medial cortex (mm) between both groups. In terms of the number of comminuted fragments and anterior flange to fracture distance (mm), there was also no difference noted between the ‘poor’ and ‘good’ functional groups. Conclusions. 1. There was no observed correlation in pre-operative patient and fracture related variables with outcome in this population of patients with PDFFTKA. 2. Post-operative evidence of callus formation appears to be directly related to better clinical outcomes.

The presented study aimed at investigating the relationship between the extraversion level and speaking anxiety in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context on the one hand, and testifying the relationship between the extraversion degree and speech fluency and speech accuracy, on the other hand. To this end, 60 advanced university students, including 12 males and 48 females, participated in the study at the quantitative phase, and 28 of them, including 14 from the extraversion levels, and 14 from the introversion levels, were observed on their oral performance at the qualitative phase. Based on Spearman’s Rank Order Correlation using SPSS in the quantitative section, the findings revealed a strong negative correlation between the extraversion level and public speaking anxiety, on the one hand, and a strong positive correlation between the extraversion degree and speech fluency in the qualitative phase, on the other hand. Speech accuracy revealed having no significant correlation with the extraversion degree. Indeed, extraversion and introversion seem to be the major personality differences that have attracted the attention of psycholinguists, in particular Dornyei (2005); henceforth, it would be worth clarifying the underlying characteristics of this construct to gain a more comprehensive view of these personality type indicators, respectively.

Background. Health education is one of the main cores of primary health care (PHC). However, there is limited evidence on the difficulties of implementing health education programs. This study explored the barriers of implementing health education programs in Iranian rural communities. Objectives. A qualitative study with conventional content analysis approach was conducted. Applying purposeful sampling, 34 rural folks and health care providers were employed to participate in the study. Data were collected through individually, semi-structured interviews. Data analysis continued until data saturation, when no new theme or idea emerged. Material and methods. A qualitative study with conventional content analysis approach was conducted. Applying purposeful sampling, 34 rural folks and health care providers were employed to participate in the study. Data were collected through individually, semi- -structured interviews. Data analysis continued until data saturation, when no new theme or idea emerged. Results. Four themes, including “Ineffective teaching and learning processes”, “Lack of health educators’ motivation”, “Communication gaps”, and “Lack of resources and facilities for teaching and learning” emerged as the barriers of implementing health education programs in rural communities. Conclusions. Several executive and communicational problems were identified as the local-level obstacles of implementing health education programs in rural areas. Better understanding on the extensive range of health education barriers in rural areas may be helpful for rural health workers and stakeholders in designing and/or revisiting health education programs in rural communities.

The leaves, stems, and bark of Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. (EU), also known as Du-Zhong, have traditionally been used to cure various diseases, such as liver, kidney, and muscle diseases, in Asia. Despite evidence for protective effects against renal complications, its precise effects and mechanisms of action are unclear. In this study, the effects of EU on advanced glycation end products (AGEs)-induced renal disease and its mechanism were examined. NRK 52E normal rat kidney tubular epithelial cells were treated with AGEs and an EU extract. Expression levels of TGF-β1, an indicator of renal cell damage, and catalase, an antioxidant marker, were examined. Nuclear factor-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (keap1), and p65 regulation were examined to identify additional antioxidant mechanisms related to renal cell apoptosis and AGEs-induced renal cell damage. The effects of EU on mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), Akt, and phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), which are involved in apoptosis, were also examined. TGF-β1 expression increased in response to AGEs and decreased by additional treatment with EU. Additionally, EU increased the expression of catalase. We found that EU increased Nrf2, keap1, and p65 and regulated the expression of RAGE (receptor for AGEs) and its downstream target Sirt1. EU also regulated the AGEs-altered phosphorylation of apoptosis factors. Based on these findings, we concluded that EU regulates AGEs-induced renal cell damage via antioxidant and apoptosis-related mechanisms.
