Opis:
The issue of domestic violence has been widely described – its specific character, variety of aspects involved, its epidemiology and the influence of violence on psychological functions of the family. Then the results of analyses of police reports with data referring to the range of violence in Lublin region were presented. The results have been critically discussed and have led to the following conclusions: the number of police interventions in Lublin region is increasing every year, which means that on one hand the rate of violence is unfortunately getting bigger , and on the other hand the awareness of victims and their trust in the police institution hopefully increase; the highest in numbers are women victims, children are next; victims that come from villages less frequently turn to the police for help in the case of violence; violence is more intense in families with alcoholic problems.

pomostowanie aortalno-wieńcowe
Opis:

Opis:
Introduction: Ischemic heart disease is the most common cause of death in the world. The lives of patients with vascular defects can be saved by coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). However, it is associated with an increased risk of developing depression after surgery. Meterial and Methods: The aim of the study is to present the results of the latest research on postoperative depression after CABG, including studies describing the course of the disease, its consequences for the patient’s prognosis and treatment. The publications available on the PubMed platform published after 2011 were reviewed. Results: Depression before and after CABG affects 30–40% of patients, mostly women. Established after surgery and untreated, it persists for many years. The level of anxiety in patients decreases systematically after surgery. Indicators that may correlate with the patient’s postoperative depression, including cortisol, high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and oxidative stress biomarkers, are being investigated. The occurrence of depression in patients after CABG has a number of negative consequences. Those include: weaker response to treatment, greater chance of relapse, and increased readmission frequency and mortality. Treatment of patients with this disorder involves the use of antidepressants (most often SSRIs – selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) and/or various types of psychotherapy with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) at the forefront. Conclusions: Depression following CABG decreases the quality of life and worsens patient prognosis. It is necessary to detect this condition early after surgery and to apply treatment, taking into account the cardiological disorders of the patient.

Opis:
Vasopressin - pituitary neurohormone, in addition to the essential role of which is to regulate blood pressure and affecting the body's water balance, it is involved in other processes such as social behaviour, memory processes and learning. It also plays an important role in modulating anxiety. This hormone seems indispensable for the creation of proper social interactions, and its low plasma levels correlate with the dysfunction of interpersonal relationships. In this article, we review and summarize the studies on the role of vasopressin in the pathogenesis and therapy of schizophrenia. Despite some potential limitations in peer-reviewed studies, the literature suggests the potential role of vasopressin in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia and the possible therapeutic application in this psychiatric disorder.

Opis:
Intestinal bacteria and the microbiota-brain-intestin axis have been the subject of intense research in the last decade. Until recently, it seemed unlikely to combine fecal microflora with mood disorders. The growing amount of animal research shows that one of the etiological factors of mood disorders may be irregularities in this area. Evidence indicates the existence of an extremely important two-way relationship between bacteria, intestines and the brain, and that this interaction is complex and takes place on many levels. Understanding and analyzing this dependency gives new possibilities in the therapy of mood disorders, such as the use of psychobiotics, prebiotics or drugs which selectively eliminate specific bacterial strains (antimicrobials). Psychobiotics are „good” bacteria which, when consumed in appropriate doses, have a positive effect on the intestinal axis and on the condition of patients with mental disorders. Studies on their use show good results in the treatment of diseases such as depression. In people suffering from depression, significant differences in the composition of the intestinal microflora were observed, which speaks for its essential role in this disease. Even greater role of bacteria in mood disorders favors research that proves that fecal microbiota transplant entails consequences in the form of behavioral changes.

Opis:
Manganese (Mn) is an essential chemical element for the human body, but it can be neurotoxic if the homeostatic range is exceeded. In this article, we review and summarize research on environmental exposure to manganese contained in drinking water and and the relationship of excess manganese to disorders of the nervous system in children. We identified and analyzed 17 original articles published in 1983-2017. The most common bioindicator of exposure to Mn was manganese content in the hair, but some studies measured manganese in blood and urine. One study concerned the content of this element in dentin, one in umbilical cord blood. The WISC, IQ, CALVT scales were the most commonly used to assess cognitive functions. Most studies indicate that higher Mn exposure is associated with worse cognitive functions, motor and hyperactive behavior. Despite some potential limitations in peer-reviewed studies, the negative impact of exposure to manganese on the developing brain is well demonstrated and preventive strategies should be promoted.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. COPD is a medical state characterized by chronically poor airflow, and typically worsens over time. Farmers have an increased risk of COPD because of being exposed to ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, inorganic dust, and organic dust. The quality of life of the ill depends on biomedical as well as psychosocial factors, the impact of which has not been a frequent subject of studies among COPD patients. The aim of the study was to indicate the factors that have negative and positive influence on the quality of life of farmers suffering from COPD. Materials and method. The study was conducted among 84 farmers treated for COPD in the Department of Pneumology, Oncology and Allergology of the Medical University in Lublin, Poland. The differences between the farmers concerned: severity of the disease, level of education and income, frequency of smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol, kinds of support they receive from their families, and the level of depression and anxiety experienced by the patients. Results. The study revealed that most patients suffered from depressive and anxiety disorders, and the level of depression higher among the patients who smoked more. Lack of family support had significant influence on exacerbation of the patient’s depressive and anxiety symptoms. Patients who had recently experienced a critical situation presented with more severe COPD symptoms, lower quality of life and a higher level of depression. Higher income of the patients had positive influence on their quality of life. Farmers addicted to alcohol suffered from a higher level of anxiety.

Opis:
The dissection of the internal carotid artery, although rare, is in five to twenty-five percent a causative agent of acute ischemic stroke in patients up to the age of 45. The aim of this paper is to present the case of ischemic stroke within the right hemisphere with left-sided uncomplicated dissection of the internal carotid artery in the case of a young woman. A 35-year-old patient was admitted to the Department of Neurology on an emergency basis due to the sudden motor dysphasia and paresis of the right upper limb. During the anamnesis, the woman reported a head injury suffered two days earlier as a result of fainting. Diagnostic procedures toward ischemic stroke indicated a presence of hypodense area within the left hemisphere of the brain. Subsequent studies – MRI, CT angiography confirmed the existence of an ischemic lesion in the area of the left middle cerebral artery as a consequence of obstruction of the left internal carotid artery. In addition, a dissection of the right internal carotid artery was revealed. Further differential diagnosis, including systemic diseases, did not reveal the reasons for the coexistence of ischemic stroke and vessel dissection on the opposite side. Carotid dissection is a rare but dangerous condition. It either develops spontaneously or after an injury to the head or neck. Any kind of injury of the carotid artery can cause dissection and should lead to include this condition in the differential diagnosis- the more so since even small dissection of the internal carotid artery can be manifested with a delay.

Opis:
Although there are currently known treatments for AIDS patients, the virus is still evolving, which means that it is not always possible to eradicate it from an infected organism. The FDA approved in November 2017 the first, complete treatment regimen containing two drugs: dolutegravir and rilpivirine (Juluca). The following article discusses current knowledge about a new, innovative drug as well as future therapeutic options of HIV-1 patients. The preparation can be used as a complete treatment regimen for HIV-1 infection to replace the current antiretroviral regimen in adults who have been virologically inhibited for at least 6 months. Clinical studies of this preparation show that the drug is well tolerated, is metabolizable and offers additional benefits, such as improving the lipid profile, improving bone mineral density and reduced bone resorption. Undoubtedly, longer observation of the effects of this drug therapy is needed, but this dual scheme seems to be a promising strategy for patients infected with HIV.
