We study performance of several conditional variance estimators for an autoregressive time series which include local linear smoothers with various bandwidths, local likelihood and difference-based estimators. In the theoretical part, asymptotic normality of the local linear estimator of variance with no mixing assumptions imposed on the underlying process is proved. Moreover, numerical examples performed reveal that a two-stage local linear smoother with a bandwidth, proposed by Ruppert, Sheather and Wand, used to estimate the regression function and a simple rule of thumb bandwidth for variance estimation performs best for variances without much structure, whereas the bandwidth considered by Fan and Yao works very well for much more variable variances.

In the paper we review stochastic properties of wavelet coefficients for time series indexed by continuous or discrete time. The main emphasis is on decorrelation property and its implications for data analysis. Some new properties are developed as the rates of correlation decay for the wavelet coefficients in the case of long-range dependent processes such as the fractional Gaussian noise and the fractional autoregressive integrated moving average processes. It is proved that for such processes the within-scale covariance of the wavelet coefficients at lag k is O(k^2(H-N)-2), where H is the Hurst exponent and N is the number of vanishing moments of the wavelet employed. Some applications of decorrelation property are briefly discussed.

In this report, the problem of testing for a difference between conditional variance fnuctions (or volatilites) of two independent nonlinear time series is investigated by means of an extensive simulation study. Empirical results on the properties of the test proposed confirm the test's validity, at least for some types of heteroscedasticity as contrasted with homnoscedastic erroos as well as for some types of differences in heteooscedasticity. Moreover, interesting properties of several estimators of conditional mean, variance and fourth moment functions are empirically found too.

The present article is a continuation of previous papers by the same authors devoted to the efficiency of crop rotation experiments. We focus on plans distinguished by the cyclical pattern of the incidence matrix. For practical reasons, we slightly modify the efficiency coefficient. The relation between the resulting efficiency coefficients is examined. In addition, we provide a background material on crop rotation experiments.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań dotyczących wpływu zmian dat odbioru kontenerów na ilość operacji przeładunkowych w intermodalnym węźle kolejowo-drogowym. Zaproponowano algorytm zmniejszenia ilości operacji przeładunkowych, który uwzględnia zwiększenie buforu czasowego pomiędzy składowanym w stos kontenerami.
In the article submitted the results research of relating to the influence of the changes of the dates of the reception of containers on the quantity of trans-shipping operation in the intermodal train-road hub. Proposed the algorithm of the decrease of the quantities of trans-shipping operation, which takes into consideration the increase of time buffer between warehoused in the heap by containers.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań nad doborem optymalnych parametrów technologicznych odlewania gorącokomorowej maszyny ciśnieniowej w celu uzyskania odlewów ze stopu magnezu AZ91, przeznaczonych do pokrywania powłokami ochronno-dekoracyjnymi. Odlewy takie wymagają szczególnej staranności wykonania, ponieważ - oprócz odpowiednich właściwości mechanicznych i małej porowatości, muszą charakteryzować się bardzo dobrym stanem powierzchni (odpowiednia faktura i chropowatość oraz brak wad powierzchniowych, takich jak: linie płynięcia, fałdy, smugi itp.). Dla wytypowanego detalu (odlew klamki) opracowano plan eksperymentu, według którego przeprowadzono badania na stanowisku odlewania ciśnieniowego w odlewni POLMAG w celu określenia istotnych parametrów wpływających na jakość powierzchni odlewów.
The article presents the results of research on the selection of optimum technological parameters of the hot-chamber die casting machine operation to make castings in AM50 magnesium alloy, coated next with the decorative and protective coatings. Castings of this type require special care during performance, because in addition to the high mechanical properties and low porosity, they should have a very good surface finish (proper texture and roughness, and absence of surface defects such as flow lines, folds, streaks, etc). For the specified detail (cast handle), a plan of the experiment was developed, according to which studies were carried out on a die-casting stand operating in the POLMAG Foundry to determine the important parameters affecting the surface quality of castings.

The paper presents the prototype of innovating bone tissue preserving THRA endoprosthesis with multi-spiked connecting scaffold - the main result of our research project: "Experimental investigation and design of the constructional properties of bone-porous implants fixations" (4T07C05629, Polish Ministry of Science, finished in February 2008) presented also as plenary lecture at the 18th International Conference "Biomaterials in Medicine and Veterinary Medicine" in Rytro (Poland), 2008. Three-dimensional selective laser melting (SLM), a direct metal manufacturing (DMM) technology from rapid prototyping/rapid manufacturing (PR/RM) group, was successfully applied to manufacture these prototypes of Ti6AI7Nb powder. We share our observations and remarks on the prototypes manufacturing in SLM laser additive technology.

Changes in habitat conditions in the area of Eastern Poland (Polesie Podlaskie), often associated with anthropopressure, cause a reduction in the number of locations and population size of valuable and rare bog plant species, including a Pleistocene boreal relict, Salix myrtilloides. The aim of this study was to determine the current conditions of occurrence of this species based on the physico-chemical parameters of peatland piezometric groundwater. The results confirm the declining trend in the number of locations and abundance of this species in the past few decades, but at the same time they confirm the wide range of amplitude of the many investigated factors. Among the groundwater parameters studied, the low level of nitrogen fractions, phosphorus fractions, cations, and DOC can be considered to be a set of conditions promoting the preservation of the Salix myrtilloides population. The higher concentrations of phosphates, sulfates, Na, Ca, and Mg as well as higher pH and electrolytic conductivity can be considered to be presumably unfavorable. The lack of significant differences in the values of the piezometric water factors investigated for the sites with different population sizes of the studied species requires the identification of other limiting factors and the implementation of programs for its active protection in Poland.
