    Opis:
    Issues related to identities and ethno-national identifications are more frequently described and analysed in the context of social dynamics. Researchers dealing with the theme point to the evolution of identities, change in their makeup related to the emergence of a different context of group functioning, and also changes connected with the nature of ethnic relations, from habitual relations to ideological relations. The article concerns the Lemko people’s identity. This is a borderline group of multi-dimensional cultural identity, divided in terms of identity. A number of the Lemko people consider themselves as Ukrainians, others consider the Lemko as a distinct ethnic group, while others see themselves as a Carphatorussian nation along with Belarusians, Russians and Ukrainians. The article consists of two main parts. The first part presents basic categories of identity that have been reconstructed on the basis of the research results. The study was carried out in the mid-nineties among representatives of this small east-Slavic community. The second part examines the dynamics of the Lemko identity. The dynamics show variability of its cultural content and a certain evolution of identity constructs created by the Lemko ethnic leaders. The text highlights new developments that emerged in the debate on identity after the Lemko were inscribed as a separate ethnic minority to the Act on National and Ethnic Minorities and Regional Language of 2005.

    Dla grup etnicznych walczących o uznanie, nieposiadających własnego państwa standaryzacja języka, udo- wodnienie jego odrębności, działania na rzecz jego zachowania, a także obecności w sferze publicznej są niejednokrotnie poważnym wyzwaniem. Często procesy te spotykają się ze sprzeciwem różnych aktorów spo- łecznych zarówno wewnątrz, jak i na zewnątrz grupy. W przypadku braku własnego państwa, zapewniającego instytucjonalne wsparcie tych działań, znacznie większa jest odpowiedzialność etnicznych liderów. Artykuł oparty jest na wynikach badań empirycznych prowadzonych wśród liderów etnicznych. Przedstawia rolę ję- zyka jako klucza do definiowania odrębnego statusu grupy oraz sposób jego wykorzystania w walce o uznanie i w polityce tożsamości dwóch grup etnicznych walczących o zmianę statusu grupy i prawne upodmiotowienie: Rusinów Karpackich i Ślązaków. Analizuje w perspektywie porównawczej przebieg dyskusji przeciwników i zwolenników nadania grupowym etnolektom statusu odrębnego języka. Konieczność udowodnienia odrębności języka jest bowiem w przypadku obu analizowanych grup jednym z warunków prawnego uznania.

    This article concerns identity politics in the broader, theoretical perspective. The author discusses the activities of Silesian activists who are striving to have the Polish state formally recognize their group’s separateness. Their activities are subject to the rules arising from the national system for the protection of minorities, which rests on two ideas: the principle of non-discrimination in the treatment of all citizens, and the right to preserve and protect one’s own identity (with the active aid of the state in this regard). In Poland, obtaining the right to protection requires the state’s legal recognition of a group, that is, the group must be inscribed in the Law on National and Ethnic Minorities and Regional Languages. The Silesians have been unsuccessfully attempting to obtain such recognition for over a dozen years. The author, on the basis of her own research, addresses the question of how non-inclusion in the system for protecting minorities is seen by leaders of an excluded ethnic group.

    The emergence of separate nationalities often entails standardisation of the language and an attempt to prove its multifunctional nature, while codification as such becomes one of the basic demands of ethnic movements striving to-wards emancipation. In her paper, the author analyses the process of emanci-pation of Silesian in the context of linguistic ideologies, studying above all the ideologies shared by Silesian ethnic leaders. The conclusions presented in the paper are based on analyses of numerous in-depth interviews conducted with Silesian ethnic leaders. This approach makes it possible to take into account, in the analysis of linguistic processes, the point of view of the users of the specific language and their linguistic awareness, and also makes it possible to seek relationships between linguistic awareness, language structure and social phenomena.

    A study such as the national census can be examined form a number of perspectives. While it can be considered as a statistical study, presenting an objective, true, scientifically grounded picture of the society, it can be also be seen as an important event or social fact from the political viewpoint, one which affects the social reality and intergroup relations. In this article the latter perspective has been applied. It analyzes how the National Census has been used by Silesian ethnic leaders who aim at changing the status of their group, demand the recognition of its separateness and its legal protection. Based on an analysis of Silesian ethnic leaders’ activities, in the text I hypothesize that the National Census of Population and Housing 2011 was an extremely important fact for the strategy of struggling for recognition. The preparations for the census and the period when it was carried out have activated Silesian organizations. They used the census to mobilize their members and fight for “Silesian souls” in a community which is divided by the people’s sense of identity. Silesian leaders have also treated the census as a significant phase in the, ongoing since the mid-1990, fight for changing the groups’ status. By taking advantage of democratic procedures, referring to legal solutions considered in the census, and later drawing attention to the obtained results they have made claims concerning the recognition of their group’s separateness by the state.

    Ethnic leaders play an increasingly important role in shaping the ethnic ties and functioning of ethnic groups. National and ethnic elites are also advocates of collective identity. They create the criteria of ethnic identity and develop identity constructs. Such constructs are to be the frame for the creation of the individual identity of the members of the group. While formulating identity projects leaders must be in dialogue with the group which they wish to influence. In this paper, I will show the complexity of these processes. In the eighty narratives collected during my research on Silesian ethnic leaders we see individual ways of constructing identity and boundaries of group practices of everyday life (where identity is negotiated and multiple, based on the symbolic resources and categorizations available in the group – the pnioki, krzoki and ptokiof the title), and, on the other hand, identity projects constructed in a more conscious way. The latter are created in the context of identity politics, which my interlocutors lead on behalf of the collective entity (in this case, the Silesian community).

    This article is a retrospective look at the research experiences of the two authors, who began their study of ethnic issues in Poland at the beginning of the 1990s. They discuss the place and role of the anthropologist in the research process, the social and political context of activities in the field, the researcher’s position in relation to the research subjects, power relations, positioning, and the prevailing forms of discourse. Their aim is to show the challenges and dilemmas facing a researcher of ethnic minorities, with the necessity of choosing a strategy of engagement or distance and the consequences of that choice.
    Artykuł jest próbą retrospektywnego spojrzenia na doświadczenia badawcze dwóch autorek, które rozpoczęły swe badania nad problematyką etniczną w Polsce na początku lat dziewięćdziesiątych XX wieku. W centrum ich uwagi znajduje się namysł nad miejscem i rolą antropolożki/antropologa w procesie badawczym, społecznymi i politycznymi uwarunkowaniami działań podejmowanych w „terenie”, usytuowaniem w relacji do badanych, pozycjonowaniem, relacjami władzy czy też  obowiązującymi formacjami dyskursywnymi. Kluczowe jest ukazanie wyzwań i dylematów, przed jakimi staje badaczka/badacz mniejszości etnicznych — w obliczu wyboru strategii zaangażowania bądź zdystansowania podczas badań oraz konsekwencji dokonywanych wyborów.

    The publication in Kashubian, which is the result of the “Language as a Cure” project, analyses the influence of discrimination experienced by ethnic minorities and migrants on their health and well-being. It also looks at the benefits of preserving native languages and strong ethnic identity as well as the consequences of the pandemic for these groups. The books contains practical recommendations and solutions for improving the functioning of minority groups in Poland and supporting the efforts to preserve their languages and culture, preventing discrimination and stigmatization as well as building better relations between ethnic minorities and majorities.

    In this article we consider a simple two stage supply chain. We quantify the variance amplification of orders – the bullwhip effect in a model with stochastic lead times. Employing the moving average forecasting method for lead time demands we obtain an exact value of the bullwhip effect measure. We analyze the formula using numerical examples.
