    Opis:
    Abdominal surgery on patients with significant body malformation is often a challenge for an operative team. Particularly, when patient presents lesions suspected for malignancy but benign disease cannot be excluded. In the reported case the patient suffered from cerebral palsy and had extreme spinal distortion with significant displacement of internal organs. Solid renal mass was detected incidentally, but because of body deformation the biopsy to asses pathological status could not be performed. The decision to perform surgery was made and the patient underwent successful laparoscopic partial nephrectomy. Pathology examination of the specimen revealed renal cell carcinoma grade 2.

    Opis:
    Chitosan and its derivatives are renewable biopolymers characterized by high biocompatibility; therefore, they are harmless to humans and allow immune tolerance and improved hydrophilicity. Moreover, chitosan has been the most studied of all polysaccharides used in biomedical applications during the last decade. Combinations of chitosan and porphyrinoid compounds in hybrid materials have revealed many potential applications for biomedical sciences. The main advantage of such materials is an increase in the solubility of porphyrinoids in body fluids and therefore greater release of singlet oxygen to the treated tissue. Chitosan-based drug delivery systems can improve the targeting of porphyrinoids and their release at predetermined locations and finally achieve desired therapeutic effects with minimal side effects. Hence, porphyrinoid-chitosan materials can be applied in drug delivery systems, cancer theranostics and magnetic resonance imaging. The combination of chitosan and porphyrinoids also appears useful in the healing and repairing of damaged organs, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, as well as dressing materials. Huge benefits are related to the treatment of wounds, which has been presented for self-healing hydrogels based on chitosan and porphyrinoids. Furthermore, the chitosan/porphyrinoid combinations have revealed enormous benefits for antimicrobial photodynamic therapy.

    The case describes an 86-year-old man with thrombosis of the deep dorsal vein and corpora cavernosa of the penis who developed symptoms 4 months before hospitalisation. An accurate imaging diagnostics supplemented with a biopsy of the corpus cavernosum confirmed the initial diagnosis. Moreover, an adenocarcinoma of the hepatic flexion of the colon with numerous metastatic lesions, including those to the crus of penis were found. Diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties were described and the results obtained were discussed in the context of available literature.

    Opis:
    The paper describes a system for monitoring and diagnosing a gantry. The main goal of the system is to acquire, visualize and monitor vibration levels of the gantry crucial elements. The system is also equipped with a computing and analytical part which enables predictive maintenance related to the vibration level assessment. The system architecture can be used in other applications too, i.e. those which require a wireless network of vibration sensors to carry out diagnostic tasks.
    W artykule przedstawiono system monitorowania i diagnostyki suwnicy bramowej. Głównym zadaniem systemu jest akwizycja, wizualizacja i monitorowanie poziomu drgań newralgicznych elementów suwnicy. System wyposażony jest również w część obliczeniowoanalityczną, umożliwiającą realizację zadań predykcyjnego utrzymania ruchu (ang. predictive maintenance) związanych z oceną poziomu drgań. Architektura systemu umożliwia wykorzystanie go również do innych zastosowań, w których dla realizacji zadania diagnostyki wymagana jest bezprzewodowa sieć czujników drgań.

    Objective. The study was designed to evaluate the relationship between thyroid antibodies and gland dysfunction, with the aim of finding a clinically useful threshold value of thyreoperoxidase antibodies, which could prove to be predictive for thyroid failure. Materials and method. The study was conducted on 99 women, ages ranging from 18–91 years (mean age: 45.5 ±17.0), were treated as outpatients in the Department of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Internal Medicine. Analysis of serum samples for TSH concentration and anti-TPO titers was conducted. Results. The most common disorder was hypothyroidism. Anti-TPO titers above reference range values were observed in 35 patients (35.4%): 21 (60%) were hypothyroid and 11 (31.4 %) were euthyroid. The anti-TPO and TSH serum levels correlated both in patients with high thyroid antibody titers, and in the anti-TPO negative groups. To find the threshold value of anti-TPO that would help predict hypothyroidism, receiver operating curves were used. With this approach, TPO antibody titers over 17 IU/ml indicated hypothyroidism with a 90% sensitivity and 75% sensibility. Conclusion. It can be postulated that the cutoff values of anti-TPO in the general population should be decreased in order to improve autoimmune thyroid disorder screening. Obviously, using that margin may lead initially to the detection of some false positive subjects. However, with lower cut-off values, more patients can be enrolled into thyroid follow-up groups. In this way, many people could avoid complications of undiagnosed, insidious thyroid failure.

    W artykule autorzy dokonują analizy międzynarodowych aktów prawnych, a zwłaszcza postanowień Konwencji o prawach dziecka pod kątem relacji dziecka z rodzicami. Wskazując na podmiotowość dziecka i przedstawiając katalogi praw dziecka przeprowadzają dowód na konieczność zaakceptowania prawa dziecka do rodziców rozumianego jako prawo dziecka do odpowiedzialności rodzicielskiej. Analizie towarzyszy przegląd historycznych koncepcji dotyczących funkcjonowania dziecka w społeczeństwie i rodzinie. Autorzy odwołują się do pojęcia odpowiedzialność rodzicielska spotykanego w ramach powszechnego systemu ochrony praw człowieka oraz systemu Rady Europy. Omawiają reguły wypracowane przez Komisję Europejskiego Prawa Rodzinnego (CEFL), które komisja ta przedstawiła w dokumencie „Odpowiedzialność rodzicielska w świetle europejskiego prawa rodzinnego”, chcąc przyczynić się do umocnienia wspólnych wartości europejskich dotyczących praw i dobra dziecka oraz dążąc do harmonizacji prawa rodzinnego w Europie. Treść tego pojęcia jest konfrontowana z terminem władza rodzicielska, którym posługuje się polski prawodawca opisując relacje dziecka z rodzicami. W artykule przedstawiane są różnice między tymi pojęciami oraz ich teoretyczne i praktyczne konsekwencje. W ostatniej części artykułu autorzy na podstawie przykładów ilustrują problematykę właściwie rozumianego prawa dziecka do rodziców i niedoskonałości prawa polskiego zarówno w aspekcie jurydycznym, jak i legislacyjnym. W tej części przedstawiają wnioski de lege ferenda związane ze zmianami w kodeksie rodzinnym i opiekuńczym oraz w przepisach proceduralnych.
    The authors analyse the international instruments, in particular the Convention on the Rights of the Child to determine the child’s relationship with parents. Indicating the subjectivity of the child and presenting the catalogues of the rights of the child they prove the necessity of accepting the right of the child to both parents, understood as the right of the child to parental responsibility. The analysis is followed by a review of historical concepts concerning the functioning of the child in a society and the family. The authors refer to the concept of “parental responsibility” occurring within the universal system of human rights protection and system of the Council of Europe. The text discusses the rules established by the Commission of European Family Law (CEFL) and presented in the document “Principles of European Family Law regarding Parental Responsibilities”, in order to promote the development and strengthening of the common European values relating to the rights and interests of the child and aiming for harmonization of family law in Europe. The content of this concept is confronted with the term “parental responsibility”, is used by the Polish legislators for describing the child’s relationship with parents. The article presents the differences between these concepts as well as theoretical and practical implications. In the final part the authors illustrate the problem of properly understood the notion of the rights of the child to both parents and imperfections in the Polish law, both in juridical and legislative aspect. Present are also de lege ferenda findings, associated with changes in the Family Code and procedural rules.

    The Polish society has perceived privatization as an issue of special importance which enables a free market economy in a short time. Privatization has always raised hopes and expectations. It is the lack of experience in the field of ownership transformations, the level of their complexity and the economic, legal, psychological and other conditionings that have confronted those transformations with many hindrances. They have also raised numerous moral and ethical dilemmas among the staff of privatized companies and founding organs including the staff of the Voivodship Council of Łódź. The decisions of the Working Board of one company about the future path of privatization have raised concerns among the staff uncertain of the fate of their place of work. In such cases the voice of the staff, which previously contributed to the company’s financial status, has always been decisive when choosing the path of privatization; this concerns mostly workers’ partnerships. It was John Paul II’s words about people of conscience who are needed in Poland, which were said in Skoczów, that were crucial for privatization decisions by the Voivodship Council of Łódź.

    The ER is one of the most important folding compartments within the cell, as well as an intracellular Ca^(2+) storage organelle and it contains a number of Ca^(2+) regulated molecular chaperones responsible for the proper folding of glycosylated as well as non-glycosylated proteins. The luminal environment of the ER contains Ca^(2+) which is involved in regulating chaperones such as calnexin and calreticulin, as well as apoptotic proteins caspase-12 and Bap31, which may play an important role in determining cellular sensitivity to ER stress and apoptosis. The ER quality control system consists of several molecular chaperones, including calnexin, that assist in properly folding proteins and transporting them through the ER as well as sensing misfolded proteins, attempting to refold them and if this is not possible, targeting them for degradation. Accumulation of misfolded protein in the ER leads to activation of genes responsible for the expression of ER chaperones. The UPR mechanism involves transcriptional activation of chaperones by the membrane-localized transcription factor ATF6, in conjunction with the ER membrane kinase IRE1, as well as translational repression of protein synthesis by another ER membrane kinase PERK. When accumulation of misfolded protein becomes toxic, apoptosis is triggered, potentially with IRE1 involved in signaling via caspase-12. Both the extrinsic and intrinsic apoptotic pathways appear to culminate in the activation of caspases and this results in the recruitment of mitochondria in an essential amplifying manner. Bap31 may direct pro-apoptotic crosstalk between the ER and the mitochondria via Ca^(2+) in conjunction with caspase-12 and calnexin. Accordingly, ER stress and the resultant Ca^(2+) release must be very carefully regulated because of their effects in virtually all areas of cell function.
