Opis:
This paper is a study of G6PD activity in malaria-infected children in Owerri. Blood samples were collected from fifty-one (51) children hospitalized in the Federal Medical Center (FMC) and analyzed using standard Medical Laboratory methods. Results revealed that out of the 51 children examined (26 males and 25 females), 39, representing 76.47% of the total malaria infected children numbers, were G6PD deficient, while 12, representing 23.53%, had normal G6PD. Two different plasmodium species and their percentage occurrences were observed. These were: Plasmodium falciparum (78.43%) and Plasmodium malariae (21.57%). The work indicated that male children were more (P < 0.05) deficient than females, with percentage levels of 61.53% and 38.47%, respectively. In addition, children between the ages of 49-60 months was observed to be more (P < 0.05) G6PD deficient (with percentage of 25.64%), while those between 0-12 months were least G6PD deficient (with percentage of 8.3% (P < 0.05)). As being afflicted with malaria carries a high risk of Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency in children, there is, therefore, urgent need for public enlightenment on public health implications, need for proper hygiene, as well as a need for strategies for preventing and controlling mosquito populations

Opis:
This paper is centred on a binary classification problem in which it is desired to assign a new object with multivariate features to one of two distinct populations as based on historical sets of samples from two populations. A linear discriminant analysis framework has been proposed, called the minimised sum of deviations by proportion (MSDP) to model the binary classification problem. In the MSDP formulation, the sum of the proportion of exterior deviations is minimised subject to the group separation constraints, the normalisation constraint, the upper bound constraints on proportions of exterior deviations and the sign unrestriction vis-à-vis the non-negativity constraints. The two-phase method in linear programming is adopted as a solution technique to generate the discriminant function. The decision rule on group-membership prediction is constructed using the apparent error rate. The performance of the MSDP has been compared with some existing linear discriminant models using a previously published dataset on road casualties. The MSDP model was more promising and well suited for the imbalanced dataset on road casualties.

Opis:
The study analysed rural farming households’ poverty status and alleviating strategies in Benue State, Nigeria. The specific objectives of the study were to: describes the rural household heads’ socio-economic characteristics; determine the poverty status of the respondents and its determinants; and identify poverty alleviating strategies of the respondents. Data for the study was collected from 420 respondents selected using a multi-stage sampling technique. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics, the Foster-Greer-Thorbecke poverty measurement index, and the Binary Logistic regression model. The findings of the study revealed a very high incidence of poverty (70%), having a gap of 0.34, and severity of 0.17. Poverty in the area is positively associated with the age of the household head and household size, while gender, educational level, off-farm activity, membership of a group, farm size, and land ownership are negatively associated with poverty. The common poverty alleviation strategies identified were agricultural wage labour (48.6%), rental services (45.0%), and transportation business (36.7%). Therefore, it was recommended that the government and other stakeholders should initiate sustainable social protection schemes that can assist rural residents in alleviating poverty until their condition improves.

Research background: The application of non-linear analysis and chaos theory modelling on financial time series in the discipline of Econophysics. Purpose of the article: The main aim of the article is to identify the deterministic chaotic behavior of stock prices with reference to Amazon using daily data from Nasdaq-100. Methods: The paper uses nonlinear methods, in particular chaos theory modelling, in a case study exploring and forecasting the daily Amazon stock price. Findings & Value added: The results suggest that the Amazon stock price time series is a deterministic chaotic series with a lot of noise. We calculated the invariant parameters such as the maxi-mum Lyapunov exponent as well as the correlation dimension, managed a two-days-ahead forecast through phase space reconstruction and a grouped data handling method.

A double-star is a tree with exactly two vertices of degree greater than 1. If $T$ is a double-star where the two vertices of degree greater than one have degrees $k_1+1$ and $k_2+1$, then $T$ is denoted by $S_{k_1,k_2}$. In this note, we show that every double-star with $n$ edges decomposes every $2n$-regular graph. We also show that the double-star $S_{k,k−1}$ decomposes every $2k$-regular graph that contains a perfect matching.

Opis:
In this paper we consider a link, characterized by specific capacity, that services multi-rate random or quasirandom traffic. Random traffic is generated by an infinite number of traffic sources, while quasi-random traffic is generated by a finite population of traffic sources. The link is modeled as a multi-rate loss system. Handover and new calls are distinguished. New calls compete for the available bandwidth under a threshold call admission policy. In that policy, a new call of a particular service-class is not allowed to enter the system if the in-service handover and new calls of the same service-class plus the new call, exceed a predefined threshold (which can be different for each service-class). On the other hand, handover calls compete for the available bandwidth based on the complete sharing policy. We show that the steady state probabilities in the proposed models have a product form solution (PFS). The PFS leads to a convolution algorithm for accurate calculation of congestion probabilities and link utilization.
