Opis:
Introduction. In today’s world, tobacco is the most common cause of morbidity and mortality and is associated with unhealthy behavior. Poland is among the countries with high rates of smoking, and occurrence of tobacco related diseases. Tobacco use by children and adolescents is a serious public health problem because of the immediate and long-lasting harmful effects on health. A large group of current smokers begin smoking during youth. The goal of the work was to culturally and linguistically adapt, and test and pre-evaluate a Polish version of the National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS), which identifies and monitors trends in tobacco use among young people. Materials and methods. The test was administered by a test-retest method in 2015 with participation of 47 (25 girls and 22 boys) people aged 17–18. Respondents filled out the questionnaire twice within two weeks. The compliance percentage of individual test items and correlations between individual items in repeated measurements were evaluated. Results. More than seventy percent have reliability ratios at very high or high levels with twenty five percent at moderate levels. Conclusion. The tested Polish version of the NYTS questionnaire may be used in adolescent studies.

The advances in the diagnostics of eye diseases have been presented in the work including the optic coherence tomography, confocal microscopy, ultrabiomicroscopy and perimetry. Introduction: The advances in the diagnostics of eye diseases during the last decade of the 20th century and in 21st century is incomparable with the corresponding, earlier periods of development of that discipline. This can be attributed, inter alia, to the pace of the development of imaging techniquesat present at the level close to the histological picture. Objective: The latest methods of diagnosis of changes of the front and back of the eye have been presented in the paper. Material and method: The overview of the current national and foreign literature has been done, mainly for over 10 last years. The following databases have been searched: PubMed and Polska Bibliografia Lekarska.
Cel: W pracy przedstawiono najnowsze metody diagnozowania zmian przedniego i tylnego odcinka oka. Opis:
Introduction. Cerebral palsy (CP) is a problem presenting multiple issues and the prevalence of this condition is quite significant. CP risk factors are mainly observed in prematurely born children as well as those affected by complications around the time of birth or during the period of mother’s pregnancy. Quite frequently CP is manifested by abnormal muscle tone, contractures and deformities, and consequently impaired fine and gross motor functions. Aim. The study was designed to examine the level of hand function, i.e. fine motor skills and to investigate whether there is a correlation between development of fine motor and gross motor functions. Material and methods. The study group included 80 children with infantile CP. In the group there were 24 cases with spastic diplegia, 36 with spastic hemiplegia, and 20 with bilateral hemiplegia. During the study the children performed Box and Blocks test, and their parents filled in Manual Ability Classification System (MACS) describing the level of fine motor function development in their children. The children were additionally asked to perform two motor tasks. The first one involved an attempt to assume position on all fours, and the other one checked the ability to assume and maintain standing position. Results. The best scores in the conducted tests were found in children with CP taking the form of spastic diplegia, and the poorest scores in MACS, Box and Blocks test as well as in motor tasks assessing gross motor function were observed in children with bilateral hemiplegia. Conclusion. The form of infantile CP affects the level of manual abilities. There is a correlation between the level of gross motor and fine motor functions development.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is a straightforward presentation of the steroidogenesis process and the most common type of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) - 21-hydroxylase deficiency - as well as the analytical diagnostic methods that are used to recognize this disease. CAH is a family of common autosomal recessive disorders characterized by impaired adrenal cortisol biosynthesis with associated androgen excess due to a deficiency of one or more enzymes in the steroidogenesis process within the adrenal cortex. The most common and prototypical example of the CAH disorders group (90-95%) is caused by 21-hydroxylase deficiency. Less frequent types of CAH are 11β-hydroxylase deficiency (up to 8% of cases), 17α-hydroxylase deficiency, 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase deficiency, P450 oxidoreductase deficiency and StAR deficiencies. In the 21-hydroxylase and 11β-hydroxylase deficiency, only adrenal steroidogenesis is affected, whereas a defect in 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase or 17α-hydroxylase also involves gonadal steroid biosynthesis. Many countries have introduced newborn screening programs based on immunoassays measuring 17-hydroxyprogesterone from blood spots used for other neonatal screening tests which enable faster diagnosis and treatment of CAH. Currently, chromatographic techniques coupled with mass spectrometry are gaining popularity due to an increase in the reliability of the test results.

The development of the side arm edge of the valley-gully in Gałkowice village in the Dwikozy commune (the Opatówka catchment in the Sandomierz Upland) was investigated during the period from 2002 to 2017. An increase of fragmentation of the gully edge was found. Most of the pre-existing erosive indents increased in size (maximum of 2.8 m – about 0.2 m per year). An increase in the area of the gully by 145 m2 was found. As a result, the boundary of plow tillage shifted to an average of 1.5 to 2 meters (maximum 3.8 m), which resulted in a loss of 545 m2 of adjacent arable land. As the main reason for the development of the analyzed section of the gully, meltwater flows were considered.

Dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) deficiency is a rare defect of the first step of the pyrimidine catabolic pathway. Patients with a complete enzyme deficiency may be clinically asymptomatic or suffer from neurological abnormalities of various severity. We report a case of an 8-year-old girl with psychomotor retardation and mild course of the disease. Analysis of urine showed strongly elevated levels of uracil and thymine, and no DPD activity could be detected in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Sequence analysis of the DPD gene (DPYD) revealed that our patient was homozygous for the common splice-site mutation IVS14+1G > A, which suggest that the carrier status for this mutation may be not rare in the Polish population.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of selected factors, such as: gender, age, stroke type, side of paresis, time to initiation of rehabilitation, first or successive in-patient rehabilitation and severity of paresis at admission on the final clinical status of patients and on the outcome of treatment at the department of rehabilitation, district hospital.Material and methods: All 431 post-stroke patients qualified for the treatment at the department of rehabilitation between January 2002 and December 2003 were included in the study. Patients were divided into four age groups. Results of rehabilitation were analyzed in male and female groups separately. Patients were divided according to the stroke type into four groups either suffering from an ischaemic or a hemorrhagic stroke; another selection cirterion was left-sided vs. right-sided paresis. The so-called general fitness, Barthel Index and Brunnström test were used to evaluate clinical status of the patients and the progress of rehabilitation. Statistical analysis was carried out using the t-test or – alternatively – the non-parametric Wilcoxon signed rank test, analysis of variance (ANOVA) or the nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test, and the chi-square test. Results: Based on the obtained results, it was proven that multidimensional, complex rehabilitation in a specialist centre, carried out by rehabilitation team resulted in significant improvement of post-stroke patients’ clinical status. The improvement was observed for all measurements of fitness used in the study. Analysis of the effects of rehabilitation with regard to patients’ age indicated that an improvement in general fitness, motor activity (reduction of paresis) and independency in activities of daily living was obtained in each age group. Based on the analysis conducted in groups of patients with different stroke aetiologies, it was found that effects of the treatment in patients with haemorrhagic stroke were better than in patients with ischaemic stroke, which was observed in each of the applied measures used for the evaluation of patients’ clinical status. Mean improvement observed after the treatment was greater in patients with right-sided paresis than in patients with left-sided paresis. Gender had no significant effect on the extent of rehabilitation results. Conclusions: Results of the study indicate that in post-stroke patients, gender, advanced age, stroke location, stroke type or motor skills at admission do not constitute a criterion determining the possibility of conducting rehabilitation procedures.

Introduction. According to epidemiologic research, the number of obese and overweight children is increasing. A common way of dealing with this problem is enacting legislation regarding food served in educational institutions. In Poland, the regulations regarding the assortment of school shops are contained in the Ordinance of the Minister of Health of 26th June 2015 (and its subsequent amendments). Aim. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the product range of school shops and vending machines in Rzeszów. Methods and materials. The study covered 52 primary and secondary schools in Rzeszów. The schools included in the study had 15568 students altogether. Products bought by students in school shops and vending machines were recorded over the period of 3 days. Results. The study has shown a statistically significant relationship (p <0.001) between the amount and types of products bought in primary and secondary schools. Healthy snacks only made up a small percentage of products sold. Secondary schools sold 20% more snacks with high sugar content compared to primary schools. A majority of products sold were compliant with regulations (p=0.12). Conclusions. The assortment of school shops has changed after the implementation of the Ordinance of the Minister of Health of 26 June 2015 (and its subsequent amendments). The newly introduced restrictions significantly narrowed down the range of products offered in schools, reducing the number of products containing more than 15g of sugar (13.5g per 100g/ml in case of dairy products) or 10g of fat per portion.

Hypertension is a serious health issue both in Poland and worldwide. It has been demonstrated that hypertension diagnosed in childhood persists in adulthood. Therefore, knowledge of the risk factors, prophylaxis and treatment of hypertension are crucial due to its serious medical and social consequences. Early identification of risk factors for hypertension allows to implement targeted preventive actions leading to the modification of habits connected with lifestyle, which in turn may lead to a reduction in the incidence of the disease or reduce its effects. The aim of the paper is to characterize the relationship between the occurrence of excessive body mass and hypertension in adults and in children and adolescents. Material and methods. Introduction. Structural glycans have great biological significance and are involved in signaling and cell communication of the immune system. They are attached to proteins and lipids in an enzymatic process called glycosylation where glycosyltransferase and glycosidases bind sugar residues and lead to the formation of bioconjugates. Aim. In this paper we describe the importance of glycosylation in the immune system and its changes in diseases. Material and methods. This review was performed according to systematic literature search of major bibliographic databases. Results. Proper glycosylation ensures the functioning of the organism, however, defects in structural glycans of immune system changes their properties and can lead to disorders and further to autoimmune diseases. It has been also proven that glycosylation of autoimmune system is changed during cancer. In this paper we described types of structural glycans, significance of glycosylation of selected components of the immune system and its modifications in disorders. Conclusions. Knowledge about changes in the glycosylation in diseases is the key to understanding the processes of autoimmune diseases and may allow the development of new treatments in the future.

The aim of the study was to determine the level of functional independence in adult patients with previously undiagnosed or untreated phenylketonuria (PKU). The study was conducted among 400 intellectually impaired adult residents of Social Welfare Homes in South-Eastern Poland born prior to the introduction of neonatal PKU screening programs. PKU was screened by filter paper test using tandem mass spectrometry methods, and confirmed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometric analysis of PKU organic acids in urine. Degree of functional independence included the assessment of activities of daily living (Barthel Index) and measures of balance and gait (Tinetti scale). Eleven individuals with previously untreated PKU were identified whereby eight presented with moderate disability and three with mild disability. Six had a high risk of falls and five had a moderate risk of falls. This study indicates that there is considerable number of undiagnosed PKU patients within the Polish population who require assessment and management in order to reduce the impact of the neurological and neuropsychiatric problems associated with the condition. Appropriate therapy for those with undiagnosed PKU should, in particular, address the risk of falls.

The paper provides statistical analysis of the photographs of four various granular materials (peas, pellets, triticale, wood chips). For analysis, the (parametric) ANOVA and the (nonparametric) Kruskal-Wallis tests were applied. Additionally, the (parametric) two-sample t-test and (non-parametric) Wilcoxon Rank-Sum Test for pairwise comparisons were performed. In each case, the Bonferroni correction was used. The analysis shows a statistical evidence of the presence of differences between the respective average discrete pixel intensity distributions (PID), induced by the histograms in each group of photos, which cannot be explained only by the existing differences among single granules of different materials. The proposed approach may contribute to the development of a fast inspection method for comparison and discrimination of granular materials differing from the reference material, in the production process.

Cosmogenic radionuclides in meteoroids are produced in space in the process of activation. These nuclides have various lifetimes in range from a few days to several hundred thousand years and can therefore be helpful in solving several problems related to the study of meteoroids and their remains, both in space and on the Earth. The simplest application of cosmogenic radionuclide decay in meteorites is to determine the terrestrial age of meteorites, especially those whose fall has not been observed. In this article, we present an additional application of cosmogenic radionuclide measurements, namely for the verification of origin of rocks that show equivocal features and may potentially represent meteorites.

Polish Fireball Network
Opis:
The Polish Fireball Network (PFN), has been undergoing continuous development. Since then, several large grants have been obtained, which were at least partly used for modernization purposes. In recent years, two more grants have been obtained, which allowed for the expansion and modification of the existing PFN infrastructure. In 2021, the PFN76 Kozienice was modernized, but also the PFN14 Zielona Góra station was reactivated and the new PFN77 Suhora station was launched in 2022. Thanks to these improvements, the tracking of meteoroids entering the Earth Atmosphere above Poland became more accurate, which facilitates the search for meteorites and increases the chances of finding new fresh meteorites in Poland. On the night of May 10, 2021, PFN stations registered an exceptionally slow bolide. The phenomenon named PF100521 Wykrot appeared over central Poland in the Mazowieckie Voivodeship at 21:32 UT and calculations showed that some meteorites may have fallen. This phenomenon was used to conduct a series of analyzes to show how observational uncertainties affect the final results. Two variants of the results are presented in this work.

Introduction. In recent years there has been a significant increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity in humans. It turns out that the problem is not limited to adults; excessive body weight is occurring in children more often. Aim. The main purpose of this work was to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity in preschool children from the Rzeszów district, and to determine risk factors for occurrence. Materials and survey method. The study was conducted among 200 preschool children (3 - 6 years of age) from the Rzeszów poviat area. Measurements of height, weight, and determination of BMI were performed and these values are standardized according to the WHO centile grids appropriate for each age group. Survey results. Normal weight was observed in 58% of the respondents, 11% were overweight, and 10.5% were obese, whereas 20.5% of children had undernourishment. Obese children were the largest group among 6-year-olds. Among 4 year old children, abnormal body weight were more frequent in boys. On the other hand, in children aged 5 years, undernourishment or overweight was found more frequently in girls. Conclusions. The study did not confirm a significant relationship between gender, place of residence and socio-economic situation of respondents, and the prevalence of overweight or obesity. The results of this study indicate that the problem of excessive body weight refers to the increasing number of children.
