Opis:
Having a home of one’s own was enumerated by Hobcraft and Kiernan (1995) as one of the five pre-conditions for the entry to parenthood in industrialised eco- nomies. The importance of home ownership for the decision to become a parent has not been investigated for Poland, however. This article aims at filling partly this gap through examining the relationship between home ownership and first birth among Polish women born 1971–1981. This research issue is considered to be important due to a decline in the number of dwellings completed each year as well as the enormous increase in housing prices that were observed in Poland after 1989. Our empirical findings point out a strong and positive relationship between home ownership and entry to motherhood. More in-depth analyses show that this result is mostly to be attributed to the fact that parents-to-be condition the realisation of their childbearing plan made in the past on becoming a home owner. It is to be noted, that rental accommodation is a far less attractive option for persons planning a child, as is the residence at parents’ dwelling. These results are largely consistent with empirical findings of other researchers investigating this issue in other industrialised economies and suggest that difficulties with a home purchase are one of the reasons for fertility postponement in Poland.

Opis:
A discussion of the effects of partners’ labour force participation on marital stability has been part of the demographic debate for several decades. While theorists generally agree that men’s employment has a stabilizing effect on marriage, there is considerable controversy about the effects of women’s involvement in the labour market on marital stability. This debate has centred on several models and arguments. The most recent contributions have underlined the role of the context in moderating the relationship in question, and our study aims to contribute to this debate. We use the case of Poland, a country that underwent rapid and profound changes in its economic, institutional, and socio-cultural settings. Using GGS-PL data, we estimated a hazard regression of marital disruption, separately for women and men. The effects of employment status were allowed to vary by calendar time in order to determine how the relationship between women’s economic activity and marital stability was affected by the transformation of the labour market; the reassignment of responsibility for an individual’s welfare among the state, the family, and the market; the change in institutional support for families; and the liberalisation of the gender roles. Our empirical study showed that, after the onset of the economic transformation, working women became significantly more likely to divorce than women who did not have a job. This finding implies that the economic transformation led to a substantial increase in women’s dependence on their partners, and made it much more difficult for non-working women to exit unhappy marriages. This conclusion is further corroborated by our finding that, relative to working women, the disruption risk among women on maternity and parental leave declined over time. As expected, men’s employment was found to stabilise marriages both prior to and after 1989.

This article provides insights into employment decisions of mothers and mothers-to-be in a post-socialist Poland around the entry to the EU. Previous studies for this country continuously pointed to a strong determination among mothers to be employed during the economic transformation, despite increasing obstacles to combining paid work with childrearing over the 1990s. We analyse in-depth interviews to explore women's motives to work for pay. We investigate how these motives are related to women's childbearing experiences and intentions. Our analyses show that motherhood was central in women's lives at this point in Polish history, but females sought to combine it with employment. We also find that women's perceptions about their ability to balance work and motherhood were strongly related to the meanings that they attached to paid work.

Analiza statystyczna wyników wykazała wyższą aktywność prób inokulowanych mierzoną za pomocą zdolności do wygaszania wolnego rodnika ABTS• w porównaniu do prób kontrolnych.
The aim of this study was to determine the antioxidant activity and total polyphenol content of the grain extracts of 30 varieties of winter wheat. This aim was achieved by analyzing samples naturally infected and non-treated with fungicides, described as control and samples inoculated with fungi of the genus Fusarium. It was found that the polyphenol extracts obtained from 30 wheat cultivars had an antioxidant activity. Statistical analysis of the results showed a higher activity in the inoculated samples as measured by the ability to quench free radical ABTS• compared to the controls. In contrast the total polyphenol content in the control and inoculated samples was not significantly different. There was no significant correlation between the content of polyphenols in the extracts and antioxidant activity.

A variety of mechanisms have been proposed to explain the malnutrition and body mass loss in UC patients. The aim of the study trial was a nutritional state assessment of 347 UC patients, admitted for surgical treatment, and the evaluation of the impact of this state on the postoperative course in this group of patients. Material and methods. We referred the results of nutritional state assessment to the length of time of postoperative hospitalization of patients. Results. Through application of the Kruskal-Wallis test we found statistically significant, but weakly expressed, differences between the values of nutritional state parameters and period of hospitalization of patients. The applied U Mann-Whitney test, with statistically significant results with p <0.05, showed statistically significant differences between cured and dead subgroups in: 1) loss of body mass in 6 months before hospitalization (p = 0.000033), 2) hemoglobin level (p = 0.006676), 3) total lymphocyte count (TLC) (p = 0.025242), 4) total serum protein level (p = 0.003485), 5) serum albumin level (p =0.00165). Differences in BMI values were statistically negligible (p = 0.969397). Conclusions. The body mass loss in 6 months before admission, total lymphocyte count and serum albumin level are the reference parameters of the nutritional state of UC patients on admission to surgery

Crohn’s disease (CD) patients are qualified for surgery in the acute phase of the disease or after ineffective medical therapy. The course of the disease and the medical treatment received to that point weaken the general state of patients, with that they also cause undernutrition. The aim of the study was the assessment of the nutritional state of 168 CD patients, admitted for surgery and the evaluation of the influence of this state on the postoperative course. Material and methods. We referred the results of the nutritional state assessment to the time of the postoperative hospitalization of patients. Results. Applying the Kruskal-Wallis test we found statistically significant, but weakly expressed, differences between the values of nutritional state parameters and period of hospitalization of patients. The applied U Mann-Whitney test, with statistically significant results with p <0.05, showed that no one parameter of the nutritional state of patients expressed a statistically significant difference between dead and recovered groups. Conclusions. We propose the body mass loss in the 6 months period before admission, TLC and serum albumin level as parameters which well detect undernutrition in CD patients presenting for surgery

In this work, cast steel G17CrMoV5-10 was investigated. The material subject to investigation as part of this study is commonly used to manufacture steam turbine casings. Modern steam turbines operate under elevated temperature and complex oscillated loads. Thus, the focus of this study was to investigate material under behavior during low cycle fatigue (LCF) test performance at 500°C with and without hold time in tension. During all types of test, cyclic softening of cast steel was noticed. Increasing of total strain rate and applying hold time significantly reduce fatigue life. During hold time, due to temperature and tension the material creep what is confirmed by increasing inelastic stain accommodation.

Opis:
Diosgenin is a steroidal sapogenin present in fenugreek and Dioscorea spp. as glycosides (saponins). Diosgenin has already been reported to inhibit osteoclastogenesis and to stimulate osteogenic activity of osteoblastic cells in vitro, and to exert some antiosteoporotic effects in rats in vivo. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of diosgenin administration on the skeletal system of rats with normal estrogen level and with estrogen deficiency induced by bilateral ovariectomy. The experiments were carried out on 3-month-old non-ovariectomized and ovariectomized Wistar rats, divided into control rats and rats receiving diosgenin (50 mg/kg p.o. daily) for 4 weeks. Serum bone turnover markers, bone mass and mineralization, histomorphometric parameters and mechanical properties were studied. Diosgenin improved some investigated parameters in both non-ovariectomized and ovariectomized rats, in which estrogen deficiency induced osteoporotic changes. Diosgenin increased compact bone formation and probably inhibited cancellous bone resorption, which led to improvement of mechanical properties of compact and cancellous bone. In conclusion, this in vivo study demonstrated that diosgenin may be one of sparse compounds increasing bone formation.

In vitro antileukemic activity of five glucocorticoids and their cross-resistance pattern in childhood acute lymphoblastic and non-lymphoblastic leukemia were determined by means of the MTT assay in 25 leukemia cell samples of childhood acute leukemias. The equivalent antileukemic concentrations of the drugs tested were: 34 μM hydrocortisone (HC), 8 μM prednisolone (PRE), 1.5 μM methylprednisolone (MPR), 0.44 μM dexamethasone (DX) and 0.22 μM betamethasone (BET). In comparison with initial ALL cell samples, the relapsed ALL group was more resistant to PRE (38-fold, p = 0.044), DX (> 34-fold, p = 0.04), MPR (38-fold), BET (45-fold) and HC (33-fold). The AML cell samples were even more resistant to: PRE (>85-fold, p=0.001), DX (> 34-fold, p = 0.004), MPR (> 69-fold, p = 0.036), BET (> 69-fold, p = 0.038) and HC (54-fold, p = 0.059) when compared with ALL on initial diagnosis. A significant cross-resistance among all the glucocorticoids used was found. Only in some individual cases the cross-resistance was less pronounced.

Opis:
Glufosfamide (β-D-glucosyl-ifosfamide mustard) is a new agent for cancer chemotherapy. Its pharmacology is similar to commonly used oxazaphosphorines, but it does not require activation by hepatic cytochrome P-450 and preclinically demonstrates lower nephrotoxicity and myelosuppression than ifosfamide. The aim of the study was a comparison of the drug resistance profiles of glufosfamide and other oxazaphosphorines in childhood acute leukemias. Leukemic cells, taken from children with ALL on diagnosis (n = 41), ALL on relapse (n = 12) and AML on diagnosis (n= 13) were analyzed by means of the MTT assay. The following drugs were tested: glufosfamide (GLU), 4-HOO-ifosfamide (IFO), 4-HOO-cyclophosphamide (CYC) and mafosfamide cyclohexylamine salt (MAF). In the group of initial ALL samples median cytotoxicity values for GLU, IFO, CYC and MAF were 15.5, 33.8, 15.7 and 7.8 μM, respectively. In comparison with initial ALL samples, the relative resistance for GLU and IFO in relapsed ALL samples was 1.9 (p = 0.049) and 1.3 (ns), and in initial AML samples 31 (p < 0.001) and 5 (p = 0.001), respectively. All oxazaphosphorines presented highly significant cross-resistance. Glufosfamide presented high activity against lymphoblasts both on diagnosis and on relapse.

Opis:
Uptake and efflux of two anthracyclines, idarubicin (IDA) and daunorubicin (DNR), was studied in childhood acute leukemia samples. A comparison of IDA and DNR transport phenomena in relation to drug cytotoxicity and expression of P-glycoprotein (PGP) was made. Intracellular content of IDA/DNR was determined by flow cytometry using the fluorescent properties of the drugs. In vitro drug cytotoxicity was measured by the 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. PGP expression was analysed by flow cytometry. The uptake and efflux rates were non-significantly higher for IDA than DNR. There were no differences between three types of leukemia with respect to drug content during accumulation and retention. After correction for the cell volume, intracellular concentration of both drugs in each moment of uptake and efflux was significantly lower in relapsed ALL and AML samples in comparison with initial ALL cells. Efflux, but not uptake, of both drugs was inversely correlated with PGP expression and IDA, but not DNR, cytotoxicity. The cytotoxicity was correlated with drug accumulation for both drugs and with drug retention for IDA. In conclusion, it seems that (1) intracellular content was related to the lipophilic properties of the drugs rather than to the type of leukemia, (2) decreased intracellular concentration of both drugs might have an impact on compromised therapy results in AML and relapsed ALL children, (3) IDA presents higher cytotoxicity, which possibly might be decreased by the presence of PGP. These results might have a practical impact on the rational design of new chemotherapy protocols.
