    Kiedy w 1991 roku Zygmunt Bauman pisał Etykę ponowoczesną, szeroko dyskutowana była w kręgach humanistycznych książka innego socjologa, Michela Maffesoli’ego, pt. Czas plemion (Le temps des tribus), powstała w 1988 roku. W Polsce wydana dopiero dwadzieścia lat później, dziś szalenie popularna nie tylko ze względu na wieloznaczności i trudności interpretacyjne, lecz również na (złudną?) trafność zaproponowanej diagnozy. Propozycja Maffesoli’ego, jak się zdaje, była również kusząca dla Baumana, który w Etyce ponowoczesnej chciał rozprawić się z aporetyczną sytuacją jednostki uwikłanej w społeczeństwo. Wiadomo z resztą, że socjologiczny zamysł polskiego myśliciela zdradza zainteresowanie losem jednostki, doświadczeniem, które rodzi się w trudnej sytuacji bycia pomiędzy kulturą i społeczeństwemz jednej strony, a z drugiej strony pomiędzy tym, co autor nazywa „impulsem moralnym” („sceną pierwotną”) i „kodeksem etycznym”.

    The article analyzes the project of green spaces to accompany a 1920s residential development in Warsaw. The estate was intended to provide a housing minimum for the poorest inhabitants, as well as educate workers how to live an urban lifestyle. It was presumed that access to greenery, nature, a site of leisure and the smell of flowers cannot be a privilege of the bourgeoisie. Thus, the garden policy proved an emancipatory gesture, an assertion of the right to the city and a means of forging civic mindsets and attitudes. The author asks whether the innocent gardens became workshops in Sennett’s understanding, shaping principles and rituals of cooperation, and examines how they helped to promote a new citizen in a new estate.en

    Opis:
    The article analyzes contemporary interest in utopia as a method in the area of the new humanities. The author asks whether nowadays, after the post-critical turn, humanists can afford to use utopia as a method. She also ponders on the attitude that would have to be adopted for this methodology. In this context, she briefly discusses the proposals of Jeffrey C. Alexander, Immanuel Wallerstein and Ruth Levitas, while identifying ethical and methodological problems related to utopian experiments and their limits. Taking into account her methodological findings about utopia as a method, she continues her search through Polish cultural studies, pointing for example to Jan Sowa’s works and broader research trends presented at the 3rd Congress of the Polish Association of Cultural Studies in Poznań. While diagnosing them only as a preliminary phase, she believes they may be the phenomena that herald a turn towards utopia in the Polish humanities.

    Opis:
    The research on workers’ culture carried out in Poland from the 1960s to the late 1980s has been recognised in this article as a failure. The author discusses the numerous attempts to conceptualise research programmes and their actual implementation in the fields of sociology, anthropology and the emerging cultural studies. She looks for the sources of their failure, reflecting on its nature and possible causes. She asks whether the failure of the research on workers’ culture was not due to the scepticism of the researchers themselves, who might have overlooked important attempts at demonstrating self-awareness and pro-active attitude on the part of the workers, treating them as politically manipulated and therefore inauthentic. She raises the question about both ideological and methodological reasons behind this stance, the latter having to do with a clash between quantitative research and humanistic orientation. She calls for “preposterous” research (as proposed by Mieke Bal) to be undertaken, which would give a different interpretation of the workers’ various cultural initiatives from today’s perspective. Perhaps this would inspire the creation of a counter-history of workers’ culture.
    Badania kultury robotniczej w Polsce od lat sześćdziesiątych do późnych osiemdziesiątych XX wieku diagnozowane są w tym artykule jako porażka. Autorka przypomina liczne próby konceptualizacji programów badawczych i konkretne ich realizacje w obszarze socjologii, antropologii i rodzącego się wówczas kulturoznawstwa. Szuka źródeł tej porażki, zastanawia się, na czym ona polegała i co mogło być jej przyczyną. Stawia pytanie: czy niepowodzenia badań nad kulturą robotniczą nie wynikały ze sceptycyzmu samych badaczy, którzy mogli przeoczyć ważne próby manifestacji samoświadomości i aktywnego uczestnictwa robotników, traktując je jako sterowane politycznie, a więc nieautentyczne. Pyta o przyczyny zarówno ideologiczne, jak i metodologiczne – ścieranie się badań ilościowych z orientacją humanistyczną. Proponuje, aby z dystansu czasowego podjąć badania preposteryjne, pozwalające dziś inaczej odczytywać różne robotnicze inicjatywy kulturalne. Być może byłoby to inspirujące dla budowania przeciw-historii kultury robotniczej.

    Referring to Reinhart Koselleck and his arguments, this article discusses the changing nature of utopias in terms of their categories and meanings, while using dialectics to explain their phenomenon and historical attempts to implement them, as well as the rise-and-fall process of utopias and dystopias. Following in the footsteps of Tim Ingold, the author asks whether ‘dwelling perspective’ (in contrast to ‘building perspective’) and radical rejection of the Western hylomorphic model may be useful to understand two contemporary, and yet contradictory urban trends: self-organising (informal) cities and spectacle cities. Can the former be recognised as utopias in the context of the latter losing their urban values (dystopia)?

    This article places the category of mindfulness in the field of public humanities and social sciences, moving beyond its therapeutic-meditative and individualistic discourse. Searching for different conceptualisations of mindfulness, the author explores reflection focused on people’s political nature rather than their subjectivity as individuals. The thus placed mindfulness allows us to, firstly, make a claim for sociological imagination (Mills), and secondly, oppose to humanities being pushed to esoteric peripheries and having their scientific value questioned. To analyse mindfulness as our duty towards the world, the author refers to Richard Sennett’s sociology and Tim Ingold’s anti-hylomorphic project. Both concepts promote focus on the material and processual character of the world to enable us to live in it ethically and ecologically. Mindfulness is understood here as striving for the coordination of mind and body, theory and practice, conceptual (non-material) work and physical labour. It is about focusing on cooperation and respecting inequality. In this sense it may be perceived as an element of sophisticated work and a mechanism that prevents alienation.
