Opis:
Urbanization is a new development of city centres within its original boundaries to satisfy a growing population. Today, rapid population growth collapses the land use pattern due to the developments of housing and infrastructure. This study aims to identify the impacts of population growth on land-use changes in the Batticaloa Municipal Council. Various methods were used to interpret and analyze the maps, such as the supervised maximum likelihood classification, density analysis, and Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis. The results revealed that a high population density was identified near the core city, which decreases from the city centre to the city limits. Commercial and residential categories strongly correlated with population growth, and agriculture mostly closed at a significant level. Rest categories were insignificant with population growth. Thus, land use planning should be implemented to control the effects on land use.

Opis:
Irrigation is the artificial application of water to the land or soil. It is used to assist in the growing of agricultural crops, maintenance of landscapes, and re-vegetation of disturbed soils in dry areas and during periods of inadequate rainfall. Paddy production is the main agriculture of this area, has good climate, well irrigation and soil structure for paddy production. Both temperature and rainfall are the main climatic factors that affected the paddy cultivation. The main objective of the study is to find out the agricultural activities especially paddy cultivation. The sampling method has been used to collect the primary data through the questionnaire survey from 100 households and secondary data has been gathered form District Secretariat, Irrigation Report, and published research reports. MS Excel was utilized for the study to examine the changes of paddy production and other agriculture due to the irrigation water. As the result, paddy production was very high in the Maha season but it was low in Yala season because of the less rainfall and irrigation process. In addition, the highland crops were cultivated around 396 hectare in this area. Whatever, when compere with vegetable production, this was very low and the vegetable production was very high. Thus, these area people cultivate different kind of crops for their economy but have the less production. Therefore, the improvement of irrigation and other water body help to make much production can be produced more in highland crops cultivation. Proper management and better agricultural practices cause to the high production in future.

Opis:
Rainfall is of primary importance to both the physical and cultural landscape of any region. The objective of this study is to find the trends for rainfall variability on climate change in Batticaloa District of Sri Lanka, by analyzing 146 years of monthly data of rainfall received during the period 1869-2014 from the meteorological station of the Department of Meteorology. Some studies attribute extreme events to rainfall variability due to climate change induced by global warming. However, there is a dearth of climatological studies addressing the trends in rainfall over Sri Lanka in support of such attribution. In our study, statistical analysis such as linear and standard deviation for 3 year, 5 year, 11 year and 21 year periods were utilized to examine periodic rainfall changes in both annual and seasonal contexts. The study finds that the 3, 5 year moving average shows high drier seasons, but the 11, 21 years moving average show higher wet seasons during the period of study. The changes of rainfall are known to have led to disasters such as flood and drought. Annual rainfall varies from 864 mm to 3081 mm, the distribution of which has sight variation throughout the district.

Opis:
Climate change has become a major concern to human society because of its potentially deleterious impact worldwide. The degree to which rainfall amounts vary across an area or through time is an important characteristic of the climate of an area. This subject area in meteorology is called "rainfall variability”. Changes in amount, intensity and frequency affect the environment and society. The annual rainfall varies from 864 mm to 3081 mm (146 years data) distribution, which has sight variation throughout the district. The study purposes to examine the relationship between rainfall and paddy production. Samplings from 100 households have been gathered by questionnaire survey as primary data and the secondary data has been collected Meteorological Department, Department of Agriculture and published research reports. 146 years rainfall data and 34 years paddy cultivation data has been utilized to analyse the result. Accurate statistical methods have been used to find the variability that includes correlation and trend analysis of 3, 5 years moving average of standard deviation. As the result, the study finds that through the 3, 5 years moving average had shown high drier seasons of the years. The paddy production was very high in Maha season but this was very low in Yala season because of the rainfall variability. By the correlation between rainfall and paddy production, the significant value is positive in Maha season and this is negative in Yala season. However, both are having the different significance each other. Thus, even the rainfall was highly influenced to the higher production, this is impossible in each time. Therefore, the development of irrigation tanks and channels, rainwater harvesting and proper management would be supported to more production in Yala season.

Opis:
The major objective of this study is to identify the flood severity level of the study area using GIS applications. By employing this map, safer habitation zones were established. Direct personal observation and face-to-face interview was done to gather the primary data and Disaster Management center reports, Census reports of Sri Lanka, images and published research reports were used as secondary data. The severity level of flooding in this area was analyzed using SRTM imagery in ArcGIS and overlaid on a Google Earth pro map. The findings of the study established that the highly affected area consisted of around 8.953003 sq·km, the moderately affected area was around 9.190781 sq·km and the lowly affected area was approximately 9.31039 sq·km within the study area. The major causes for flood disaster in this area are the lack of drainage systems in some potential flood regions, the low landscape, poorly maintained drainage systems and the geographical arrangement of the road network. By creating this map, the inhabitants will be aware of danger areas and can relocate accordingly [3, 5-9].

Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte canal
Opis:
Assessment of temporal variation of the water quality is an essential aspect of evaluating temporary changes in a water body caused by natural or artificial contributions. The study aims to assess the water quality temporal variation and the water quality index over the year from 2010 to 2019. Water sampling was carried out near the bridge of the Kotte canal. Water quality parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity (EC), temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), ammonia, nitrate, phosphate, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were determined to assess the quality of water at different periods. It has been calculated based on the standard of the central environmental authority of Sri Lanka. The weighted arithmetic index method has been used to calculate the water quality index. The water quality index of the study area was recorded as good (33.60760) in 2010 and poor in 2013 (56.95663), 2016 (52.37269), and 2019 (69.04417). The study revealed that the water temperature in the canal fluctuates with the time and climate of the area. The EC of the water is registered within the reference range. However, pH, COD, DO, and ammonia are the main water parameters deviating from the reference range. It is observed that the leading causes of the deterioration of water quality are human activities, the illegal discharge of sewage and industrial wastewater, the lack of adequate sanitation facilities, and urban runoff.

Opis:
Batticaloa MC, one of the fastest-growing cities in Sri Lanka, is the most vital agglomeration that should concentrate upon temporal changes in land use. Various land use categories, namely commercial, residential, agricultural, scrubland, mangroves, water and barren land in Batticaloa, have been modified by the different purposes of utilization. This study aims to identify the land-use changes of Batticaloa Municipal Council from 1980 to 2018. Primary and secondary data collection methods were used to gather the data for analysis. Comparison was made to the various land use categories in 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2018. The temporal pattern of land-use change was presented via a comparison of the five-time periods of land use. ArcGIS 10.4.1 and MS Excel 2013 were applied to analyse the maps and data. The finding of the study was that between 1980 and 2018, there were significant land-use changes in the study area. Commercial and residential areas increased by 20.17 ha and 1148.57 ha, respectively, and barren land and agricultural land lost 769.54 ha and 301.99 ha, respectively. In addition, rest land use categories were converted into other land use categories during these periods. The effects of human activities are immediate and often radical, while the natural effects are relatively long. The recommendations are to enforce future land use planning, and protect forest resources through land-use strategies by way of the government with community participation encouraging the approval of urban planners to make decisions about urban development.
