Opis:
The study of Paleogene mammals of intermediate and low latitudes has increased in the last decades and has been clearly demonstrated their importance in the comprehension of the evolution and faunistic changes outside Patagonia. The study of these faunas permits establishing new comparisons among contemporaneous faunistic associations, completing the distributional patterns, and evaluating evolutionary changes in the lineages in relation to climatic conditions prevailing in each of the different regions. In this work we study the diversity of Dasypodidae recovered from the Geste Formation (Northwestern Argentina). Bearing levels of Geste Formation were referred alternatively to a Barrancan subage of Casamayoran SALMA (middle Eocene, Lutetian–Bartonian) or a Mustersan SALMA (middle–late Eocene, Bartonian–Priabonian) on faunistic comparations with their equivalent in Patagonia, although absolute isotopic data indicates ca. 37–35 Ma (late Eocene, Priabonian). We described the following taxa of Dasypodidae: (i) Dasypodinae Astegotheriini: cf. Astegotherium sp., ?Prostegotherium sp., Parastegosimpsonia cf. P. peruana; (ii) Dasypodinae indet.; (iii) Euphractinae Euphractini: Parutaetus punaensis sp. nov.; (iv) Dasypodidae incertae sedis: Pucatherium parvum, Punatherium catamarcensis gen. et sp. nov. In comparison with other beds bearing Eocene cingulate faunas from Northwestern Argentina, Geste Formation presents the greatest diversity of dasypodids. This association is consistent with a late Eocene age and shows a taxonomic and biogeographic relevant features given by a unique specific composition: (i) it differs from that known for contemporaneous faunas from Southern latitudes and younger associations from more tropical areas; (ii) it includes genera with close affinities to those distant areas; (iii) it presents unique taxa typical from Eocene units exposed at Northwestern Argentina. This highlights the evolutionary and biogeographic meaning of the cingulate of the Geste Formation and supports the idea that the faunistic regionalization probably obeyed to latitudinal than to temporal factors.

: Experimental results of effects of thermomechanical couplings occurring both in natural vulcanized rubber and rubber with self-healing polyurethane subjected to tension at different strain rates are presented. Mechanical characteristics were recorded by testing machine, while the sample temperature changes accompanying the deformation process was measured by infrared camera. The goal was to investigate influence of self-healing polyurethane on the rubber mechanical and thermomechanical properties. It was found that the introduction of the self-healing polyurethane ensures the higher elasticity and the lower tensile strength of the rubber. It was also confirmed that the material is very sensitive to the strain rate; the higher the strain rate, the higher the values of the stress and temperature increases have been obtained.

Opis:
In pursuing FHB resistance in wheat, 30 years of conventional breeding efforts in Eastern Canada have brought some progress. Substantial investment and the application in recent years of marker-assisted selection have to date, however, failed to produce agronomic lines that resist FHB as well as Sumai 3. We present here an alternative path, described as the systemic approach. Rather than seeking to introgress specific putative resistance genes, it subjects target germplasm to regimes of repeated cycles of multiple, interacting (biotic and abiotic) stresses in which desirable traits – not always adequately expressed in parental lines – are identified and selected. How can such a seemingly counterintuitive process work? The systemic approach views desired resistance as arising from the interactions of complex regulation mechanisms mediating how a host responds when a pathogen attacks. These constituents of resistance should thus not always be understood simply as discrete Mendelian units. In repeated rounds of selection, the systemic approach captures those rare individuals that embody optimal interactions of traits, and advances them as founders of lines that resist FHB more effectively than if selection focused on FHB alone. In Quebec, we have chosen to select wheat populations under combined pressure from barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) infection and FHB. Resistance to FHB and tolerance of BYDV are quantitative traits that interact. BYD increases both the direct losses from FHB and the production of mycotoxins. Selection under virus pressure, therefore, helps identify those individuals which express FHB resistance more effectively. Moreover, the correlates of virus tolerance (physiological efficiency, generalized stress tolerance and yield) point to those plants with better root traits, ability to produce biomass and yield stability. Together with numerous secondary criteria, such selection eliminates all but a few ‘winners’ in each round. Seen from a systemic perspective, the difficulty of identifying good progeny among descendants of crosses with Sumai 3 does not surprise. Deleterious linkages, pleiotropy and epistasis will usually combine in far from optimal expressions of the assembled genetic information. The systemic approach, by contrast, identifies in repeated cycles increasingly optimized expressions of genes, allowing all potential sources of resistance to be explored. Thus resistant lines can readily be derived from the crosses of susceptible parents, an objective rarely sought in conventional, focused approaches. Moreover, wheat plants respond to the systemic approach’s powerful stresses with enhanced epigenetic variation, raw material from which broader ranges of heritable traits can be selected. Germplasm that expresses a full range of attractive traits while resisting FHB as effectively as Sumai 3 can now be shown to be much more abundant than previously imagined. Perhaps this promise will entice more wheat workers to try a systemic approach...

In this paper, we completely characterize all 4-regular pseudographs (graphs that may contain parallel edges and loops) which do not have a (3, 1)-coloring. Also, for each r ≥ 6 we construct graphs that are not (r −1, 1)-colorable and, more generally, are not (r − t, t)-colorable for small t.

The need for repetitive high-power microwave systems, for instance within the scope of convoy protection, requires the availability of compact, repetitive pulsed-power generators. The development and the first experimental results of an upgraded balanced ISL Marx generator for future repetitive operations at pulse repetition frequencies in the order of 100 Hz are introduced. A key objective is to keep the fundamental modular coaxial concept by reason of its scalability and compactness. Simulation models were developed under the PSpice software package in order to investigate the charging and discharging phases of the Marx generator and also to determine the design criteria for repetitive operations. The charging resistors were replaced by ultracompact inductors for rapid charging, being able to withstand pulsed voltages up to 60 kV and pulsed currents up to 1.4 kA during the discharge phase. An improved type of strontium-titanate high-voltage ceramic capacitor was successfully tested experimentally up to 70 kV. Each new elementary stage of the Marx generator consists of eight 1.1 nF sectors of a cylinder capacitors mounted in parallel, two charging inductors of about 17.8 μH and two halves of spherical spark gaps. The pressurized self-triggered gas switches are arranged along the axis for fast consecutive breakdown thanks to the UV radiation emitted during the breakdown in each gap. The stages are installed in individual fibreglass housings. First experimental results of a 4-stage Marx generator in repetitive operation, driven by a 4 kW capacitor charging power supply up to a maximum voltage of 40 kV, are presented.

Opis:
For the evaluation of the patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) the mediolateral distance between the tibial tuberosity and the trochlear groove (TT-TG) is considered as the gold standard. In this work, we propose to replace the measurement of the TT-TG with conventional tomographic or radiological section images by a smartphone-based mobile sonography system. This new system allows to provide not only ultrasound imaging but also a measuring method for determining the TT-TG using a smartphone as a mobile tracking unit. Moreover, the system supports the diagnosis by acquiring an additional parameter: the mediolateral distance between the intercondylar notch and the tibial tuberosity (TT-IN). The distinctive structure of the intercondylar notch simplifies the examination compared to using the trochlear groove alone. A feasibility study conducted for this paper indicates that this second guideline value is an adequate replacement for the conventional measurement of the TT-TG. Especially in case of trochlea dysplasia the detection and definition of the groove may be difficult and the TT-IN value offers a reasonable alternative. Our study shows that the proposed sonography system is able to accurately determine the TT-TG in a population of symptom-free young subjects. These measurements range from 13.1 ± 4.2 mm for male to 14.8 ± 3.4 mm for female subjects. Our findings correspond to the postulated values of the gold standard. We are able to show that the values for the TT-IN are in a comparable range with 14.4 ± 4.1mm for men and 13.6 ± 4.0 mm for women. We are convinced that this study strongly indicates that the TT-IN is a useful value that is easy to measure with a mobile ultrasound-based measurement system and can provide the same level of diagnostic value compared to the gold standard TT-TG. In conclusion, a new guideline value is presented to complement the measurement of the TT-TG when a pathological anatomy prevents the detection of the groove.

Condition monitoring of machines working under non-stationary operations is one of the most challenging problems in maintenance. A wind turbine is an example of such class of machines. One of effective approaches may be to identify operating conditions and investigate their influence on used diagnostic features. Commonly used methods based on measurement of electric current, rotational speed, power and other process variables require additional equipment (sensors, acquisition cards) and software. It is proposed to use advanced signal processing techniques for instantaneous shaft speed recovery from a vibration signal. It may be used instead of extra channels or in parallel as signal verification.

The aim of the study was to describe changes in postoperative fatigue, quality of life, physical performance, and body composition in patients undergoing laparoscopic colonic cancer surgery. Material and methods. In a follow-up study from 2009-2011 at two regional hospitals in Denmark we examined 62 patients having a right hemicolectomy ora sigmoid resection performed. The main outcome measures were fatigue level subjectively scored from 1 (“fit”) to 10 (“fatigued”) on a modified visual analogue scale and by objective measurements of hand grip and knee extension strength, work capacity, weight, and lean body mass. Quality of life was assessed using the SF-36 questionnaire and pain using an ordinal scale. Patients were examined preoperatively, 1-2 and 4 weeks postoperatively. Results. Eight patients (13%) were converted to open surgery and the median bleeding (95% confidence interval of the median) was 75 (50-100) ml. One to two weeks after surgery the fatigue level and pain when moving had increased significantly (p=0.0011 and p=0.0002 respectively) and the SF-36 physical component quality of life score decreased (p<0.0001) when compared to preoperatively. However, at 4 weeks postoperatively fatigue level, pain, and quality of life scores were at the preoperative level. There were no significant changes from preoperatively to postoperatively in any of the measures of physical performance, whereas there was a slight reduction in weight and lean body mass after the operation. Conclusions. Laparoscopic colonic cancer surgery was associated with a short lasting increased fatigue and pain and reduced quality of life, but no significant reduction in physical performance after surgery.

We investigated the short-term effects of spent coffee grounds on the physical properties of two Mediterranean agricultural soils (Calcisol and Luvisol). The in vitro assay was performed with two spent coffee grounds doses (60 and 240 Mg ha-1), two incubation times (30 and 60 days) and two modalities: with and without lettuce seedlings (Lactuca sativa var. longifolia). Spent coffee grounds addition increased water retention at -33 and -1500 kPa, and decreased bulk density and plant-available water content. With spent coffee grounds, the percentage of macroaggregates increased, the percentage of meso- and microaggregates decreased and the structural stability of all types of aggregates increased. The stereomicroscopy images showed that: the structural aggregates were rounded, the porosity increased by 316%, the structure was ordered into smaller aggregates, the incorporation of spent coffee grounds particles could occur in intraped cracks and spent coffee grounds particles could act as a binding agent. Scanning electron microscopy also showed that spent coffee grounds particles interacted with mineral particles and integrated into soil structure; moreover, fungal hyphae also developed on many spent coffee grounds particles. If spent coffee grounds effects are compared with those described in the literature for other organic amendments, the same trend was observed in most of the soil physical properties although with a different intensity, principally with regard to structural stability.

Opis:
A new stem salamander, Kulgeriherpeton ultimum gen. et sp. nov., is described based on a nearly complete atlas from the Lower Cretaceous (Berriasian–Barremian) Teete vertebrate locality in southwestern Yakutia (Eastern Siberia, Russia). The new taxon is diagnosed by the following unique combination of atlantal characters: the presence of a transversal ridge and a depression on the ventral surface of the posterior portion of the centrum; ossified portions of the intercotylar tubercle represented by dorsal and ventral lips; the absence of a deep depression on the ventral surface of the anterior portion of the centrum; the absence of pronounced ventrolateral ridges; the absence of spinal nerve foramina; the presence of a pitted texture on the ventral and lateral surfaces of the centrum and lateral surfaces neural arch pedicels; the presence of a short neural arch with its anterior border situated far behind the level of the anterior cotyles; moderately dorsoventrally compressed anterior cotyles; and the absence of a deep incisure on the distal-most end of the neural spine. The internal microanatomical organization of the atlas is characterized by the presence of a thick, moderately vascularized cortex and inner cancellous endochondral bone. The recognition of stem salamanders and other vertebrates with Jurassic affinities in the Early Cretaceous high-latitude (paleolatitude estimate N 63–70°) vertebrate assemblage of Teete suggests that: (i) the large territory of present day Siberia was a refugium for Jurassic relicts; (ii) there were no striking differences in the composition of high-latitude Yakutian and mid-latitude Western Siberian Early Cretaceous vertebrate assemblages; and (iii) there was a smooth transition from the Jurassic to Cretaceous biotas in North Asia.
