Opis:
The main objective of this work is the design of a model for the technical, economic and environmental evaluation in the rehabilitation and renovation of buildings versus their demolition. A first analysis is performed on the rehabilitation and renovation of buildings versus their demolition in the historical centre of Seville, Spain. Considering that many European cities have a historical centre that in many cases also represents the most authentic part of the city, this project can be adopted as an assessment tool for many similar case studies. In a first stage, a database for Seville, Spain, has been created using ArcGIS, which identifies those buildings needing restoration. The house of tomorrow maybe the one we already inhabit by transforming it with the renovations necessary in order to make it more safe, secure, energy efficient and comfortable, finally transforming it into a contemporary dwelling, even if they are part of a historical city centre.

Opis:
The embellishment of the urban landscape of the Spanish towns is an open subject in many of its regions. In the current project we experiment with the improvement of Piornal, located in the Jerte Valley, Extremadura, Spain. The town is mainly agricultural, whose main farming (planting) is cherry. Its climate is harsh. Its winters are long, plenty of snow and rainy springs as well as autumns. This weather, put together with the low buying power of its inhabitants, made them change their traditional architecture of the house coming from adobe wall or masonry to one quicker and easier to keep, combining load bearing wall of ceramic bricks structures and facades covered with undulating sheets made of aluminium or fibrocement which protect them from the cold and the humidity. The solution has turned out to be practical but at the expense of the original beauty giving a more industrial and incidental building nature which is in contrast with its natural appearance. This work tries to recover the town identity, its citizens, its habits, its festivities and its landscape, its natural environment and its streets where they live their working or leisure life trough the improvement of the appearance of the facades of their houses, now white and covered with plates, changing them into pieces of art. All the project long, the University of Seville provides the artistic creativity and the technical resources and the town council, the board and keep of the artists through the execution period of the artistic project.

Opis:
Biological applications of ion beams have recently become a new important research field using single ion hit facilities to study individual living cells and their response to the hit of a counted number of ions. One motivation is the search for a better understanding of the fundamental processes taking place in cells and organs as a result of irradiation. Another comes from the increasing interest in using high energy protons and heavy ions as a modality for radiotherapy of deep seated tumours. In the view of treatment efficiency, study of cell culture behaviour under controlled radiation experiments, and in different chemical environments at single ion hit facilities, is a first step towards a better understanding of the processes. Tomographic techniques are applicable to situations where you need information of the inside of an object but do not want to section it into thin slices or cannot do it. Using focused MeV ion beams for tomography restricts the sample size to the order of 10-100 μm, depending of the initial energy. On the other hand, the ability to focus at a sub-micrometer level makes ion beams well suited for analyses of small sized objects as cells, spores, etc. The scanning transmission ion microscopy mode of tomography gives the mass density and corresponding morphological structure of holes and pores. It can then be used to correct the results from the other mode, particle induced X-ray emission tomography. Here is discussed a porosity analysis of bentonite clay that is planned to form an important buffer zone around canisters filled with spent nuclear reactor fuel waste deposited 500 m underground in Sweden.
