Opis:
The ventilation of the Baltic Sea deep water is driven by either gale-forced barotropic or baroclinic salt water inflows. During the past two decades, the frequency of large barotropic inflows (mainly in winter) has decreased and the frequency of medium-intensity baroclinic inflows (observed in summer) has increased. As a result of entrainment of ambient oxygen-rich water, summer inflows are also important for the deep water ventilation. Recent process studies of salt water plumes suggest that the entrainment rates are generally smaller than those predicted by earlier entrainment models. In addition to the entrance area, the Słupsk Sill and the Słupsk Furrow are important locations for the transformation of water masses. Passing the Słupsk Furrow, both gravity-driven dense bottom flows and sub-surface cyclonic eddies, which are eroded laterally by thermohaline intrusions, ventilate the deep water of the eastern Gotland Basin. A recent study of the energy transfer from barotropic to baroclinic wave motion using a twodimensional shallow water model suggests that about 30% of the energy needed below the halocline for deep water mixing is explained by the breaking of internal waves. In the deep water decade-long stagnation periods with decreasing oxygen and increasing hydrogen sulphide concentrations might be caused by anomalously large freshwater inflows and anomalously high mean zonal wind speeds. In different studies the typical response time scale of average salinity was estimated to be between approximately 20 and 30 years. The review summarizes recent research results and ends with a list of open questions and recommendations.

Opis:
Representatives of the genus Stentor (Stentoridae, Heterotrichea) are striking ciliates in environmentalwater samples because of their size (up to 4 mm) and their trumpet-like shape. Important for species identification are the following main characteristics: (1) the presence or absence of endosymbiotic algae (zoochlorellae); (2) the colour of the pigmented cortical granules, and (3) the shape of the macronucleus. The complete small subunit rDNA (SSU rDNA) of 19 further representatives of the genus Stentor was sequenced to examine the phylogenetic relationships within this genus and to determine the taxonomic value of these main characteristics. The detailed phylogenetic analyses yielded a separation of all species possessing a single compact macronucleus from those species with an “elongated” macronucleus (moniliform or vermiform). The data also indicate that the uptake of algae as well as the loss of pigmentation happened independently in different lineages. Furthermore, a high level of intraspecific variation within several species was found. Thus, S. muelleri and S. (sp.) cf. katashimai appear to represent distinct species and S. multiformis is composed of a species complex.

Opis:
The strength and temporal rigidity of climate signals are important characteristics of proxy data used to reconstruct climate variability over pre-instrumental periods. Here, we assess the performance of different tree-ring proxies, including ring width, maximum latewood density, δ13C, and δ18O, during exceptional cold (1800–1850) and warm periods (1946–2000). The analysis was conducted at a spruce (Picea abies) timberline site in the Swiss Alps in proximity to long homogenized instrumental records to support calibration tests against early temperature and precipitation data. In this cold environment, tree-ring width, maximum latewood density, and δ18O are mainly controlled by temperature variations. δ13C is influenced by various factors including temperature, precipitation, sunshine, and relative humidity. When comparing the response patterns during cold and warm periods, ring width and maximum latewood density revealed temporally stable temperature signals. In contrast, the association between the stable isotopes and climate changed considerably between the early 19th and late 20th centuries. The temperature signal in δ18O was stronger during the recent warm period, whereas the opposite is true for δ13C. In δ13C, the temperature signal weakened from the early 19th to the late 20th centuries, but an (inverse) precipitation signal evolved indicating that soil moisture conditions additionally limited recent carbon isotope ratios. An attempt to combine the tree-ring proxies in a multiple regression model did not substantially improve the strength of the dominating temperature signal retained in the latewood density data as this proxy already explained a significant fraction of summer temperature variability. Our findings underscore the importance of split calibration/verification approaches including cold and warm periods, and challenge transfer models based on only late 20th century observational data.
