Celem artykułu jest próba odpowiedzi na pytanie jakim człowiekiem prywatnie był Sienkiewicz oraz jakie relacje łączyły go z członkami najbliższej rodziny. Podstawą analizy są wybrane cechy językowe (zwłaszcza formy adresatywne i leksyka nacechowana) oraz treść listów prywatnych H. Sienkiewicza. Ekscerpcja materiału objęła korpus ponad 600 listów pisanych w ciągu prawie 40 lat do sześciorga członków najbliższej rodziny. Ze względu na adresatów korespondencji i poruszaną w niej problematykę najwięcej miejsca poświecono relacjom małżeńskim i rodzicielskim. W toku badań ujawniono wiele istotnych, ciekawych szczegółów z wciąż jeszcze słabo poznanego życia prywatnego, uczuciowego Sienkiewicza.
The aim of the article is an attempt to answer the question of what kind of person Sienkiewicz was privately and what relations he had with the immediate family. The analysis is based on selected linguistic features (especially formative and lexical) and the content of H. Sienkiewicz’s private letters. The selection of the material encompasses more than 600 letters written in nearly 40 years to six immediate family members. Because of the addressees of the correspondence and the issues involved, most focus is placed on the marriage and parental relations. The research revealed many important, interesting details from Sienkiewicz’s still little-known private and emotional life.

Artykuł zawiera szczegółową analizę leksyki i środków stylistycznych, użytych przez Sienkiewicza w opisach realiów związanych z podróżą i podróżowaniem. Ekscerpcją objęto zbiór wszystkich zachowanych 1401 listów prywatnych Sienkiewicza, który zajmuje blisko 3 tysiące stron druku w wydaniu zbiorowym korespondencji Sienkiewicza pod redakcją Marii Bokszczanin. Zebrany materiał liczy łącznie ponad 300 wyrazów oraz połączeń wyrazowych o różnym charakterze, użytych ponad tysiąc razy. Przeprowadzone badania pokazały, że relacje z Sienkiewiczowskich peregrynacji najczęściej mają charakter obiektywny i rzeczowy. Pisarz wykorzystywał tu zwykle wyrazy o treściach konkretnych, implikujących bezpośrednie odniesienia do rzeczywistości. Środki stylistyczne charakterystyczne dla stylu artystycznego w opisach realiów związanych z podróżowaniem nie są zbyt liczne. Większość zarejestrowanych przekształceń semantycznych to porównania, metafory, epitety oraz eufemizmy.
The article contains a detailed analysis of the lexis and stylistic means used by Sienkiewicz in his descriptions of travel and travelling. The excerption included the collection of all 1,401 preserved private letters written by Sienkiewicz; the collection contains nearly 3,000 printed pages in a collective publication of the correspondence of Sienkiewicz edited by Maria Bokszczanin. In the collected material there are over 300 words and expressions of different character, used over a thousand times. The research has revealed that the accounts of the Sienkiewicz peregrinations in most cases are objective in character. The writer used words with precise meanings, which refer directly to the reality. The stylistic means typical of artistic style used in descriptions of travelling is not too numerous. Most of the registered semantic transformations are comparisons, epithets and euphemisms.

The article contains an analysis of linguistic and stylistic distinguishing marks of headlines and ending formulas in Henryk Sienkiewicz’s letters to his wives. Particularly, the main subject of this research are expressions to the addressees and other ways of addressing the receivers of this correspondence. The material excerpt covers over 600 letters written during almost 40 years. The dominant of the collected material is expressively characterised vocabulary and names. The most important expression indexes are e.g. diminutive vocabulary, neologisms comparative and superlative adjectives as well as metaphors, epithets and borrowed vocabulary. During the research some significant features of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s writing style and his preferences in the ways of addressing and describing his wives have been indicated.

In formal and structural terms the collected material contains collocations in canonical and modified form.

The aim of this article is to examine the structure and the functions of neologisms included in the private letters of Henryk Sienkiewicz. The analysis of the lexis presented in this paper reveals that the writer tended to use the word-formative neologisms, semantical neologisms and functional neologisms most frequently. The expressive function of this neologisms is the prevailing one.

The text contains an analysis of terms of colour and light impressions included in Henryk Sienkiewicz’s private letters. The examination takes into consideration a comprehensive collection – counting over 1400 letters and taking up nearly 3000 printed pages, from which 196 formally and semantically different terms of colour and light have been extracted. The lexis from the examined theme range is a relevant element of the language material of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s private letters. Apart from the stricte information function, which distinguishes and identifi es colourfully described landscapes, natural phenomena, weather, objects or people, the names of colours and chiaroscuro, it emphasizes their exotic, singularity and beauty, cocreates the mood and scenery of the described realities as well as it increases the vividness and suggestiveness of the writer’s story.

This article contains a stylistic-lexical analysis of German loan-words which appear in Krzyżacy by Henryk Sienkiewicz. Its aim was to decide about the function of this group of loan-words in creation of the presented world in the novel. Material basis, counting 235 lexical units, was grouped and described in several semantic categories concerned, among other things, with: 1. different branches of economy, 2. widely understood socio-political life, 3. daily life and customs. The main text is accompanied by a dictionary of all German loan-words, which included, apart from basic information such as: defi nition and frequency, also their location in different lexico-graphic sources.

The article contains a semantic and functional analysis of unethical language behaviors included in reviews and other polemical articles about Sienkiewicz and his work, published in the Warsaw's „Głos”. The studies take into account systemic and contextual linguistic means which are negative in terms of emotions and feelings, the aim of which was to insult, mock and ridicule Sienkiewicz and/or his writing.

Artykuł zawiera analizę leksyki potocznej zawartej w listach prywatnych Henryka Sienkiewicza. W ekscerpcji materiału uwzględniono całą zachowaną korespondencję rodzinną pisarza (1401 listów). Zebrane słownictwo i frazeologia o potocznej proweniencji ujawniły szereg właściwości języka listów Sienkiewicza, zwłaszcza dotyczących preferencji pisarza w doborze tej warstwy słownej, a także w zakresie funkcji, formy leksyki potocznej. Badania materiałowe zostały poprzedzone omówieniem (wybiórczym) zagadnień związanych z pojęciem potoczności (rozwój badań nad potocznością, bibliografia, poglądy) w ubiegłym wieku.
The article contains the analysis of informal lexis used in Henryk Sienkiewicz’s private letters. Selected material encompasses entire preserved correspondence between the writer and his family (1401 letters). Collected vocabulary and phraseology of common provenance revealed several features of the language of Sienkiewicz’s letters, especially in terms of writer’s preferences in the selection of verbal layer as well as its form and function. Important part of conclusions and observations pertains to the colloquialism that is specific to letters (being functional texts) in diachrony. The material-based research is preceded by an overview of (selected) issues relating to the concept of colloquialism (development of studies on colloquialism, bibliography, opinions, standpoints) in the 20th century and today.

The present article contains a linguistic and stylistic analysis of the presentation of table manners and table etiquette as it is described in Krzyżacy [The Knights of the Cross] by Henryk Sienkiewicz. The article consists of three parts which successively describe the most important elements of medieval cuisine (courses, beverages and spices). Some attention has also been paid to the dishes and good manners at the table. The analysis of the collected lexical material shows that the festive manners, courses, beverages and dishes presented in the novel complete the credibility of other realities of medieval everyday life described in the novel, such as clothes, furnishings of Medieval houses and entertainment. Taking into account the minimal number of historical sources dedicated to everyday life of Medieval Polish people, the world of festive manners and the cuisine created by Henryk Sienkiewicz, which is close to medieval reality, came into existence mainly thanks to the writer’s imagination and language intuition.

The article discusses the linguistic devices of the evaluation of the characters created in the realities of the novel (fictitious and historical) connected with two opposite groups: the Poles (domestic) and the Teutonic Knights (foreign). The analysis of the material has revealed the persuasive mechanisms applied by Henryk Sienkiewicz in order to exert influence on the readers’ attitudes and their system of values. The repertoire of linguistic and semantic devices used for evaluation is very diversified and, among others, includes: synonymic passages giving names to the representatives of both groups, the names of values (positive or negative) and the phrases describing actions, character features and people’s attitudes evaluated as positive or negative, connecting synonymous names (of Poles and the Teutonic Knights) with different parts of speech; statements with specific connotations (positive or negative) informing about the actions, behaviours and appearance of the characters; stylistic means such as: similes, metaphors, epithets used in an expressive and evaluating function. Additionally, the conclusions drawn from the research shed light on Henryk Sienkiewicz’s writing techniques. It has become feasible to reconstruct (indirectly) the writer’s attitudes towards life and the system of values.

The article presents the stylistic and functional analysis of names of enemies and defenders used in secret journals from the January Uprising. The language treatments of the editors (metaphorisation od meanings, uncharacterized synonyms) were also taken into consideration. Thanks to them they could transfer monothematic contents and perform ideological and canvassing tasks. The examined category of names constitutes a significant language element of those texts, which enables to address the key issues of political language in the conspiracy press, in particular the system of norms and values that it represents and the means for its implementation in specific linguistic behaviours.
