Opis:: The article deals with the Greek idea of circular thought and especially with the question of its presence and meaning in the philosophy of Parmenides of Elea. A new interpretation of the fragment DK 28 B 5, which is crucial to this issue, is proposed. It is suggested that the circularity of thought refers to the deductive mode of the arguments in the “Aletheia” and to the proleptic character of some of the Parmenidean statements. Both fragment B 5 (to be placed probably at the beginning of the deduction of the “Aletheia”) and B 8.50-51 (the end of the “Aletheia”) may be successfully interpreted on the basis of this idea. The proposed interpretation makes clear why the circularity of thought does not oppose the linearity of the reasoning and why the logical character of cognition does not contradict its immediacy for Parmenides.

Opis:: Artykuł poświęcony jest pojęciu bestialstwa (thēriotēs), wprowadzonemu przez Arystotelesa w VII księdze Etyki nikomachejskiej i zdefiniowanemu przez niego jako negatywna, różna zarówno od nikczemności (kakia) jak i od nieopanowania (akrasia) dyspozycja etyczna, prowadząca do patologicznych zachowań takich jak kanibalizm, pedofilia, omofagia, fobie i kompulsje. W tekście zostaje podjęta próba interpretacji wypowiedzi Arystotelesa dotyczących bestialstwa (EN VII 1, 1145a15-35; VII 5, 1148b15-1149a24; VII 6, 1149b23-1150a8) w celu rozjaśnienia szeregu istotnych dla rozumienia tej koncepcji kwestii, takich jak: istota bestialstwa jako specyficznej dyspozycji etycznej (cz. I-II), jej konkretne postaci oraz ich geneza (cz. III), psychologiczno-moralna kondycja osób dotkniętych bestialską dyspozycją (cz. IV) oraz problem świadomości i odpowiedzialności moralnej tychże osób (cz. V).
The article deals with the „brutishness” or „beastliness” (thēriotēs), a concept introduced by Aristotle in the seventh book of the Nicomachean Ethics and defined by him as a negative ethical disposition, different both from vice (kakia) and from incontinence (akrasia), and leading to such pathological behaviours as canibalism, paedophilia, omophagia, phobias and compulsions. Aristotle’s statements concerning the brutishness (VII 1, 1145a15-35, VII 5, 1148b15-1149a24 and VII 6, 1149b23-1150a8) are examined and interpreted in order to clarify the following issues: the essence of the thēriotēs as a specific ethical disposition (Part I-II), its concrete forms and their causes (Part III), the moral-psychological condition of persons with a brutish hexis (Part IV), and their self-consciousness and moral responsibility for their bestial acts (Part V).

Opis:: This article presents and compares four different interpretations of the Homeric concept of 'self'. According to the first, the Homeric man has no concept of himself as a psychic unity, but only as a number of physical and psychical organs (Bruno Snell). The second says that he perceives himself as a complex but unified structure of psychical and physical elements (Norman Austin). According to the next view, the Homeric hero possesses the idea of reason which is able to create a unifying harmony among his various psychic powers and which constitutes the real self of a human being (Arbogast Schmitt). The fourth interpretation holds that the Homeric man identifies himself with his 'Leib', which is the seat of all his sensations, feelings and thoughts (Hermann Schmitz).

Opis:: In the first book of his Physics, Aristotle investigates the principles and causes of natural things, and discusses the relevant theories of his predecessors. Having rejected the doctrine of the Eleatics (Phys. A 2–3), he turns in Phys. A 4 to the natural philosophers and argues against the infinity of Anaxagoras’ principles. This paper presents the interpretation of the Aristotelian discussion in Phys. A 4 given by Themistius (fourth century AD) in his commentary on Aristotle’s Physics (In Phys., CAG, ed. H. Schenkl, V 2, pp. 13, 9 – 17, 26). The text of Themistius is divided into sections corresponding to the arguments of Aristotle, translated into Polish, preceded by an introduction and provided with explanatory notes.
