Opis:
Taking Ottoman art into consideration, attention has been being paid to the greatest cultural centres and the most noteworthy Turkish constructions, which were built on the territory of the present Republic of Turkey. Although it has been forgotten that during the Middle Ages and the Modern Period the influence of the Ottoman Empire reached much farther, artistic evidence can be found even in Central Europe. On the continent of Europe, the Ottoman borders covered the whole of the Balkans, the northern cost of The Black Sea, most of Hungary and a part of Poland. These areas constituted merely buildings in these territories, it is necessary to narrow one’s area of interests. In the face of innovativeness and the lack of sufficient references providing essential information about Ottoman works of art located in the territory of Europe, I had to choose the country which, in 2008, was going to be my research journey destination. Owing to its geographical and cultural proximity, I limited my choice to the territory of Catholic Central Europe. Specifically, I visited Hungary which was occupied for 158 years and the region of Podolia (27 years). During the Ottoman reign over these areas, the era of the greatest development of might and art of the Ottoman Empire took place (16th and 17th century). In addition to this, the subject of this article is not only connected with showing works of art resulting from the Osmanian Empire’s activities but also to try to investigate their artistic value against the constructions created in the territory of the “actual” Empire.

Opis:
Steroid hormones in plants and in animals are very important for physiological and developmental regulation. In animals steroid hormones are recognized by nuclear receptors, which transcriptionally regulate specific target genes following binding of the ligand. In addition, numerous rapid effects generated by steroids appear to be mediated by a mechanism not depending on the activation of nuclear receptors. Although the existence of separate membrane receptors was postulated many years ago and hundreds of reports supporting this hypothesis have been published, no animal membrane steroid receptor has been cloned to date. Meanwhile, a plant steroid receptor from Arabidopsis thaliana has been identified and cloned. It is a transmembrane protein which specifically recognizes plant steroids (brassinosteroids) at the cell surface and has a serine/threonine protein kinase activity. It seems that plants have no intracellular steroid receptors, since there are no genes homologous to the family of animal nuclear steroid receptors in the genome of A. thaliana. Since the reason of the rapid responses to steroid hormones in animal cells still remains obscure we show in this article two possible explanations of this phenomenon. Using 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 as an example of animal steroid hormone, we review results of our and of other groups concordant with the hypothesis of membrane steroid receptors. We also review the results of experiments performed with ovarian hormones, that led their authors to the hypothesis explaining rapid steroid actions without distinct membrane steroid receptors. Finally, examples of polypeptide growth factor that similarly to steroids exhibit a dual mode of action, activating not only cell surface receptors, but also intracellular targets, are discussed.

Opis:
Synthetic analogs of vitamin D for potential use in differentiation therapy should selectively regulate genes necessary for differentiation without inducing any perturbations in calcium homeostasis. PRI-1906, an analog of vitamin D2, and PRI-2191, an analog of vitamin D3 bind nuclear vitamin D receptor (nVDR) with substantially lower affinity than 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25-D3), but have higher differentiation-inducing activity as estimated in HL-60 leukemia cell model. To examine how their increased differentiation-inducing activity is regulated we tested the hypothesis that membrane-mediated events, unrelated to nVDR, take part in the differentiation in response to PRI-1906 and PRI-2191. The induction of leukemia cell differentiation in response to the analogs of vitamin D was inhibited by LY294002 (phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase inhibitor), PD98059 (inhibitor of MEK1,2, an upstream regulator of extracellular-signal regulated kinase) and rapamycin (p70S6K inhibitor) pointing out that activation of signal transduction pathways unrelated to nVDR is necessary for differentiation. On the other hand, inhibition of cytosolic phospholipase A2 accelerated the differentiation of HL-60 cells induced by either 1,25-D3 or by the vitamin D analogs suggesting possible existence of a feedback loop between extracellular-signal regulated kinases and phospholipase A2.

The aim of this work is to examine the possibility of using acupuncture treatment as a way of therapeutic tourism. The first chapter explains what acupuncture is and when it has been introduced at first. The history of acupuncture treatment is described, starting with a description of its earliest forms thousands years ago, followed by an explanation of its development and its particular methods nowadays. The second chapter describes several types of acupuncture: thermopuncture, auriculotherapy, acupressure, electropuncture and reflexotherapy. All these methods are now used in health resorts and medical SPA services all over the world. The third chapter presents some examples of acupuncture treatment used in Lithuania and Czech Republic, as well, as in Poland. Some of them are presented as basic information of the medical SPA services.

Opis:
The aim of the study is to analyze the direct and indirect consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic for the Polish banking sector. We analyzed activities aimed at maintaining the banking sector’s ability to finance the economy undertaken by the government, central bank, banking supervision, and banks in Poland, as well as assessed the financial situation of the banking sector in the period preceding Covid-19 and shortly thereafter. We found that anti-crisis measures and interventions were reflected in the financial situation of banks in the first month of their introduction, among others, by a rise in write-offs for provisions for receivables, an increase in other operating costs, or a significant decrease in receivables from debt instruments. The latter being due to the central bank providing additional liquidity to banks. Unfortunately, contrary to the expectations for increased credit availability, banks tightened their lending policy and focused mainly on financing their existing clients who had only temporary financial problems caused by COVID-19. One possible explanation for this is a lack of financial incentives for banks that neutralize an increase in risk and operating costs amid the pandemic (e.g. fiscal), despite the existence of such preferences for Treasury securities.
