    The album of works by Zbigniew Szczepanek, depicting 41 castles in northern Poland, contains more than 200 water colours, gouaches, pastels and drawings executed in 1999-2003. The warm hues, reader-friendly poetic and excellent technical level of the publication render it particularly attractive. The elegant album, in hard cover and a decorative box, includes an Englishand German-language translation and a map of northern Poland with likenesses of the portrayed castles. The album ends with notes concerning the illustrations (also translated), offering data about the technique, material, and size of the compositions, as well as describing the presented fragment of a given castle and, in the case of reconstruction, the foundation for its realisation. This indubitably interesting and well-composed album is the first in a planned three-volume series about the castles of Poland. The publishers – Tower Press – ensured a meticulous edition.

    The first monographic study on the architecture of a Franciscan and Poor Clare monasticconvent complex with the church of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin Mary and St. Anthony and a Poor Clare oratory in Gniezno. The book discusses the history of the transformations of the monument from the mid-thirteenth century to the 1950s. The presented object is the only example of a realised architectural programme in Poland which took into account the coexistence of the male and female line of the order within a church-monastic complex. The author proposed an indepth analysis of the early history of the establishment of the church-monastic premise against the backdrop of the historical events of the period – the unrealised pre-1279 project pursued under the auspices of Bolesław the Pious and the redesigning conducted in the 1430s.

    In recent years the conservation milieu has been observing with increasing anxiety assorted investments conducted in mediaeval castles. The introduction of new functions into old walls and ruins is indubitably a fascinating experience for the designers. The reconstruction of ruins may also prove to be a motor force for the development of small localities. Systemic transformations in Poland and accompanying ownership changes affecting this particular group of monuments have vividly revealed the frailty of the existing procedures, the principles of conservation undertakings and, quite possibly, the existing legislation solutions. On 7 December 2007 the head of the National Heritage Board of Poland established a College involving the Commission of Conservation Theory and Military Architecture at the Polish National Committee of ICOMOS, representatives of the academic environments of the Warsaw, Gdansk and Lublin University of Technology as well as Lódz University, together with a representative of the voivodeship conservators of historical monuments and an employee of the National Heritage Board of Poland. The task of the College consists of devising a strategy for the protection of mediaeval castles in Poland. Up to now, it has held three sessions and a seminar combined with a scientific tour of the castles of Little Poland (Cracow, 29- 31 July 2008).

    The article attempts to resolve the question concerning the number of castles in present-day Poland as well as the possibility of providing legal protection to existing resources in the contemporary economic and legal conditions, with particular stress on the ownership aspects. The authoress analysed factors causing the absence of an unambiguous answer relating to the size of the resource, with attention focused on questions associated with terminology applied for a precise definition of the affiliation of particular monuments to the 'castles in Poland' category as well as its practical application for listing the castles in the register of historical monuments. The article discusses the following concepts: historical ruins and the ruins of a monument, permanent ruins of a castle and its remnants, fragments and relics, and 'the ruins of a castle on which a part of the castle or the whole castle had been built' (this concept is as yet without a shorter counterpart).
