Opis:
The article presents archive pottery from the Regional Museum in Bydgoszcz coming from destroyed burials of the Iwno culture. On the basis of typological and chronological analysis, and in one case by using radiocarbon dates, as well as numerous analogies especially from the Polish lowlands, three beakers studied here were attributed to particular phases of formal periodization of this culture development. A beaker from an unknown site near Żnin is dated to phase I in the development of the Iwno culture (ca. 2400-2250 BC) while two vessels from Mycielewo, site 1, and Tarkowo to phase II (ca. 2250-2000 BC).

Opis:
An analysis of settlement in both upland and lowland zones reveals that the Bronze Age societies were quite capable of adapting to life in areas with different resource possibilities. The occurrence of a variety of settlement forms and occupation of diverse and radically different ecosystems, testify to the economic flexibility typical of Trzciniec Cultural Circle populations.

Opis:
The last two decades is a time of extremely intensive rescue excavations, preceding great investments. This article is a contribution to the discussion over the way of research analyses of remains from settlement sites excavated on a large scale. The authors presented their viewpoints on the method of description of sources and approach to distinguishing settlement structures. The starting point for the separation of the different settlements episodes should be a chronological scheme of the local evolution developed on the basis of the analysed materials. Evolution trend analysis of mass materials, mainly ceramics, should be preceded by a reflection about depositional and post-depositional processes. For the sites that manifest themselves only on the surface, the most important role is played by the spatial analysis. The authors suggest that the level of detail of conclusions about spatial diversity of the site, especially separation of units and phases of development, should be directly proportional to the credibility of chronological determinations.

Opis:
This article evaluates the potential of magnetometry to establish the internal structure of three mounds in the barrow cemetery of Bukivna in the Upper Dniester River Basin in Ukraine. We also evaluate the effects of geomorphological processes on the magnetometric results. The three-stage research method we applied comprises the preparation of a digital elevation model of the mounds, conducting geomagnetic surveys and, finally, targeted excavations, the latter enabling the verification of previously detected magnetic anomalies. In effect our studies show exceptionally complex geophysical anomalies, difficult to interpret with any certainty. In the peculiar case of the barrows 6 and 7 in group I, partly connected by an earthen mantle, the overlapping magnetic fields did not allow the two mounds to be distinguished from each other; it was possible to achieve only through subsequent excavations. In both barrows, a series of ritual and sepulchral structures were discovered that provided clear magnetic signals. The arrangement of the anomalies in the mound 1, group II, potentially reflects various aspects of the barrow’s structure and its state of preservation, beginning with postdepositional processes related to erosion or to the run-off of material down the slope, and ending with the mound’s stratigraphy, formed over the course of two phases. In turn, in the case of mounds 6 and 7, it can be assumed that the effects of these processes have been somewhat “suppressed” in the magnetometric image, due to the strong impact of the burnt wooden structures located underneath the features

Opis:
This paper discuses the excavations in the cemetery of the Komarów culture of the Bronze Age in Bukivna upon the upper Dniester. They have been carried out by the Polish-Ukrainian archaeological expedition as a part of the project of the National Centre of Sciences, the aim of which has been to provide comprehensive bioarchaeological characteristic and socio-cultural interpretation of the cemetery.During the field walking over 50 barrows were documented, round or slightly oval in plan. They occurred in three main clusters, arranged in groups-lines, on the watershed between the Dniester and its little, nameless tributary. The article presents the results of the study of barrow 1, in which there were discovered six features and over 400 artefacts, including 38 vessels in several deposits, 262 flint implements, fragments of structural daub, and bronze items - a pin and pendant, as well as small, burned bones.Among the features two charred wooden structures seem special and one stone-and-wood (cenotaph). Bones were “scattered” mainly between wooden structures.A series of analyses and specialist expertises had been done: radiocarbon, paleopedological, geomorphological, paleobotanical, physico-chemical. The sum of probability distribution of calibrated radiocarbon dates suggests second quarter of the second millennium BC. These dates are consistent with the analysis of the stylistics of vessels and bronze artefacts, indicating the early and classic stages of development of the Komarów culture.
