- The aim of the article is to introduce the issue of informed consent in the physician-patient relation- ship. I would like to point out the relevance of physician’s communication skills which are crucial in providing patients with information, especially in the first phase of the informed consent pro- cess when a health care professional performs patient instruction. This phase is of utmost impor- tance considering patient’s decision. Health care professional informs the patient about diagnostic and therapeutic approach, answers patient’s questions, explores the best possible treatment options in collaboration with the patient, encourages and gives reassurance in order to facilitate patient’s decision-making and managing his/her condition. Moreover, the manner and style used by physician to communicate with the patient must be taken into account. It mirrors the formation of their mutu- al relationship and their communication can significantly influence the course of treatment and its results.
