This article discusses three trial scenes from three different ancient Greek novels (by Chariton, Achilles Tatius, and Longus), in which naïve justice seems to be deliberately subverted. The titular concept of “naïve justice” is defined here in terms borrowed from Aristotle’s Poetics, where the term “double resolution” is used, disparagingly, of plots in which the good characters are all rewarded and the bad characters all punished. The argument is made that the trial scenes under discussion should raise doubts in the reader’s mind as to which of the parties is truly guilty, and which is truly innocent. This can be seen as a reflection of unexpectedly mature ethical sensibilities on the part of these often-underestimated writers, who seem to have grasped that the “double resolution” may make the reader feel good, but has little to do with the real world.

This article reviews some very recent publications pertaining to the long-term neuropsychological effects of COVID 19 (neuroCOVID). Although such publications are now appearing in large numbers on a daily basis, we still do not have enough data of sufficient quality to enable any firm conclusions to be reached. At this point, then, the authors determined to consider the main questions that have emerged so far, as we wait for the results of more thorough research in the future. The article takes up three main questions: (1). What is the etiology and pathomechanism of the neuropsychological symptoms caused by SAR-CoV-2 infection, and what is the prognosis? (2). Of the reported symptoms, which ones should be considered pathognomonic, and what is their significance? (3). What can clinicians do for their patients now, in the absence of the kind of data we need to answer either of the other two questions with any degree of certainty? Although it is not possible at this point in time to answer any of these questions definitively, it does seem increasingly clear that the problems are complex, not only at the cellular level, but also (and perhaps more so) at the conceptual level. The common report of “brain fog,” for example, very much needs to be explored, in order to determine what this vague term actually means, and what, if anything, can be done to allevi- ate it. This will require us to rethink such basic concepts as consciousness, and also to commit ourselves to genuinely interdisciplinary study.

The aim of this study was to examine the neurophysiological correlates of cognitive dysfunctions in a patient with the minimally verbal variant of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD + MV), who after reaching adulthood showed progressive deterioration of his cognitive skills. The patient was a 25-year-old male, diagnosed with ASD. He never developed spoken language, and communicated only by gesturing or writing on a computer. Our findings confirmed comorbidity of ASD and epilepsy, accompanied by dysfunction of cognitive control. We also found that spontaneous EEG and event-related potentials (ERPs) in a cued GO/NOGO task can be used to assess functional brain changes concomitant with ASD.

The aim of our research was to evaluate the effectiveness of neurofeedback in reducing the symptoms of chronic Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in a patient who had developed the syndrome following a recurrence of sphenoid wing meningioma (SOM). EEG spectra and event-related potentials (ERPs) were used to construct an individual neurofeedback protocol and to provide objective monitoring of treatment efficacy. The patient, a 34-year-old female, was diagnosed with a sphenoid wing meningioma (SOM), which had been successfully operated. Three years later, however, the SOM had overgrown at the optic foramen and extended into the optic canal, and the patient had developed blurred vision. She was repeatedly operated, and recovered well. However, due to the recurrence she developed flashbacks, anxiety and sleep difficulties, such that she was unable to continue working in her profession. The symptoms had been occurring for 4 months. ERPs in a cued NOGO task, along with EEG spectra in the resting state and during task performance were used to assess brain functioning, providing the basis for a neurofeedback protocol. Twenty sessions of individually tailored neurofeedback were performed. The patient experienced a reduction of symptoms, accompanied by normalization of ERPs parameters. The results obtained in this case point to the possible benefits of individually tailored neurofeedback protocols in the treatment of PTSD.
