Opis:
Dodatkowo, w celu wprowadzenia rankingu wśród jednostek efektywnych i uszczegółowienia interpretacji miar efektywności, wykorzystano model nadefektywności.
The aim of this paper is to evaluate financial and economic resources efficiency of forest districts in the South Poland in 2012 by means of DEA. Within financial efficiency analysis, maximal potential lumber sales income for the forest districts at fixed costs was determined. Next, within economic resources efficiency analysis, the maximal amount of lumber is evaluated, which is technologically achievable at some fixed resources. Special attention was paid to extremely inefficient units, where an analysis using the so-called benchmarks of efficiency was performed. Additionally, in order to rank the units classified as efficient and to expand the interpretation of the efficiency measures, the super-efficiency model was employed.

Opis:
Economic viability of forestry is one of the key pillars of sustainable forest management and a basis for maintaining forests and their multiple benefits for the society. It may be achieved by, inter alia, diversification of sources of income in forest management. The aim of the article is to analyse sources of revenues of state-owned forest enterprises (holdings) in selected European countries and ongoing changes in this respect in recent years. In the paper, we analyse the structure of revenues of state forest enterprises in Poland, Germany (with the examples of Bavaria and Lower Saxony) and Austria; however, particular attention is paid to the State Forests National Forest Holding in Poland, which is the largest state-owned forest holding in the European Union (EU) in terms of area of forests. The study is based on document content analysis methodology (desk research), including annual reports published by forest enterprises, statistical data and also legal regulations. The analysis shows that while revenues from the sale of wood are the main source of income of forest enterprises, some of them are seeking to diversify their sources of revenues. The Austrian Federal Forests can serve as an example of a good development strategy based on diversified sources of income. Also, the Lower Saxony State Forest company, which is approximately 60% dependent on the sale of wood, undertakes other activities, including real estate management, hunting and recreational services. Our study shows that both the State Forests National Forest Holding and the Bavarian State Forests Enterprise are based on timber harvest and sale to a large extent. We conclude that as regards the State Forests Holding in Poland, the possibility of expanding and diversifying commercial activities should become a subject of discussion among foresters, decision makers and politicians.

Opis:
1-methylnicotinamide (MNA) is a primary metabolite of nicotinamide. In recent years several activities of MNA have been described, such as anti-inflammatory activity in skin diseases, induction of prostacyclin synthesis via COX-2, aortal endothelium protection in diabetes and hypertriglyceridaemia and increased survival rate of diabetic rats. 1-methylnicotinamide was also suggested to protect pancreatic cells from streptozotocin in vivo. Streptozotocin toxicity is known to be mediated by poly-ADP-ribose polymerase. Nicotinamide and its derivatives have been shown to ameliorate poly-ADP-ribose polymerase-dependent nucleotide pool reduction. We aimed to verify if 1-methylnicotinamide and its metabolite, N-methyl-2-pyridone-5-carboxamide, can protect insulinoma cells from streptozotocin-induced toxicity. We found that N-methyl-2-pyridone-5-carboxamide, but not 1-methylnicotinamide, restores the pool of ATP and NAD+ in streptozotocin-treated cells, but neither compound improved the cell viability. We conclude that inhibition of poly-ADP-ribose polymerase-dependent nucleotide pool reduction may not be sufficient to protect cells from streptozotocin toxicity.

Opis:
The TEL/JAK2 chromosomal translocation (t(9;12)(p24;p13)) is associated with T cell childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The TEL/JAK2 fusion protein contains the JAK2 catalytic domain and the TEL-specific oligomerization domain. TEL-mediated oligomerization of the TEL/JAK2 proteins results in the constitutive activation of the tyrosine kinase activity. Leukemia cells expressing TEL/JAK2 tyrosine kinase become resistant to anti-neoplastic drugs. Amifostine is a pro-drug which can selectively protect normal tissues against the toxicity of anticancer drugs and radiation. investigated the effects of amifostine on idarubicin-induced DNA damage and repair in murine pro-B lymphoid BaF3 cells and BaF3-TEL/JAK2-transformed cells using alkaline single cell gel electrophoresis (comet assay). Idarubicin induced DNA damage in both cell types but amifostine reduced its extent in control non-transformed BaF3 cells and enhanced it in TEL/JAK2-transformed cells. The transformed cells did not show measurable DNA repair after exposure to amifostine and idarubicin, but cells treated only with idarubicin were able to recover within a 60-min incubation. Because TEL/JAK2-transformed cells can be considered as model cells for certain human leukemias and lymphomas we anticipate an enhancement of idarubicin cytotoxicity by amifostine in these diseases. Moreover, TEL/JAK2 tyrosine kinase might be involved in cellular response to DNA damage. Amifostine could promote apoptosis or lower the threshold for apoptosis induction dependent on TEL/JAK2 activation.

Opis:
A novel diagnostic method based on recognition of qualitative and quantitative composition of healthy and tumor tissue samples by library of molecular receptors was presented. Molecular receptors were formed by self-organization of N-lipidated peptides attached in the regular fashion via aminophenylamino-1,3,5-triazine linker to the surface of cellulose plate. For samples testing, the library was cloned into multiple, identical copies and for each experiment the new clone was used. The binding process was monitored by staining the discs with Brilliant Black and quantitative color measurement was performed in 256 grade gray scale. Substantial differences in the composition of healthy and tumor samples were observed in most cases. The highly individual chemical fingerprints were found to be reliant on the cancer type. For malignant papillary thyroid cancer statistical analysis identified two receptors most useful for diagnostic purposes.

Opis:
The paper concerns the problem of the occurrence of failures of the high-pressure ammonia water pipeline of the coke oven battery complex, which is affected by chemical and thermal factors as well as the operating pressure occurring during its use. Pipeline failures manifested themselves as leaks (leakage of the medium) due to cracks in the area of the pipeline thermal elongation compensators. The conducted tests included, among others: visual inspection, penetration tests, macroscopic and microscopic tests as well as chemical analysis of the material. The study includes microscopic photographs of the material structure and cracks. The results of the pipeline strength and reliability analysis were also presented. On the basis of the conducted research and analyses conclusions were formulated. The assumed cause of the damage was the incorrectly made welded joints. Formulated recommendations and proposals for actions aimed at avoiding further failures of this and similar pipelines were related to the inspection time and preventive renewal.
